Plummer’s ad: platitudes. Davis ad: at least some substance.

Plummer Ad - “C-”
Jason goes negative, with his OWN words, as 14 seconds on his closing arguement to be your Congressman. That is, in my opinion, not the best way to close, by personally, verbally attacking your opponent, one last time for 14 seconds.
Seems desperate that your message ain’t sticking.
The last 14 seconds shows Jason talking to us, his audience, and yet, between his akward inflection for certain words and phrases, Jason seems a bit too rehearsed as to WHY he wants to be your Congressman, and the best closings, if you are going to speak to the voters directly, are the ones that look like you are speaking from the heart, and so conviction of beleifs, and feel that a bond or promise is being made. I saw none of that. I saw and heard thou. I saw the nervousness that Plummer has in front of the cameras, and I heard the tones and inflections and the words of something not very comfortable, and forced, and not very much from the heart … but from the script.
But, if there was something I really was confused and was disappointed and put off, frankly, was the “negative” close, almost trying to get a message to finally resonate … that is not.
Finally, coming up with a new “slogan” for your close … not a good sign. It’s a sign of, “Well, we can try it, and let’s see if it works.” Another negative, for me, on the Ad.

Ok ad from Plummer. It might play a tiny bit with some older folks. I think it would’ve been more effective if he had laid out his business resume and the companies that he personally owns/runs, since he has been bombarded on TV with claims that “his only job has been working for his dad”.

Willy covered the flaws in Plummer’s execution, but aren’t these direct to camera ads usually filmed with a bit closer zoom to give the sense of intimacy? I found the filming of the ad odd and awkward. I get that they wanted the open land in the background but they sacrificed everything else for it. It’s just odd.

Likely didn’t do a close up as he was looking at the cue cards.
The burned out corn field was more poignant than his ad and was likely a subliminal message to him?

A young candidate’s strength is his energy and his ability to think about old problems with new eyes. He shows virtually no energy in the ad and has no ability to sell sound bites as authentic.
He looks like the little kid who is putting on Daddy’s clothing.
If you have a candidate like that, take him and put him in some sort of action shot with the voice over–something he actually enjoys doing and is good at.

viewed on the fly, as most viewers see it in my opinion, the Plummer ad is ok. sort of upbeat, hits the message points, calls the opponent a Blago person.
HMajPac ad is amusing.

I also feel the same when I see Jason in an Ad or in video. It’s like a “play” Jason is in, and the “words” and the “costumes” don’t fit the actor playing the role.

Here’s the solution–put him in a daycare playing with kids playing with a train set. It’ll look like an adult playing with kids. Look like.

My wife, who is from Carbondale,but really hasn’t followed politics, looked over my shoulder when I watched Plummer’s ad. Her comment: “He looks like a doofus”. I think she was spot on.

I saw this ad on tv about an hour ago. The first thing I noticed was him reading his lines…Very obvious. I was also wondering where in the world that was shot. I did not see any cornfield lush and green like the one shown down here this year. All were twisted, dried and ugly.

The plummer thing reminds me of a 13 year old bar mitzvah video only less articulate. Max Cleland, Wes Clark, John Kerry, Enyart, Duckworth has done a horrible job telling her war story, Democrats just can’t sell military candidates that well.

I find it very odd that Jason didn’t include any RP Lumber locations in any of his ads (unless I missed that, and if so I apologize). After all, he talks non-stop about his business and job creation background. And it’s not like he just works there. His parents own the business and all of the stores. He could’ve done a tour-de-force ad across all the stores RP Lumber owns in the 12th CD to highlight the impact the stores have on local economies. That would’ve been better.
