  1. Generic. An uninspired C.

  2. Calm; Emphasizes the choice between Tammy vs Walsh’s angry vitriol.

  3. The Duckster has Joe as her closer, and that’s all she needs.

  4. It is a calm telling of a personal bit that resonates. B.

  5. Bland populist talking points, delivered with zero likability. No wonder Walsh supporters think they still have a chance.

  6. Probably smart to play it safe with this ad since she seems to be winning. Still, Tammy is about as uninspired a candidate for Congress as I’ve seen this election cycle. This closer is more evidence of that.

  7. If people have not already decided in that 8th district race, this closing ad will not be the thing that does it for them. Except for the nice “my dad struggled” line which was personal to her, the rest of the ad could have been run by almost any candidate of either sex, of either party, anywhere in the country, who is running for congress this year. C.

  8. Tammy’s going to win, but she is going to be incredibly vulnerable in 2 yrs, D district or not if the GOP can find a candidate that can excite the base while not scaring indies at the same time.

  9. Stayed “positive”, but bland and boring positive … props for the positive and that is about it …(B-)

  11. If she wins, can Raja beat her in the primary? What about the Republican when Obama isn’t on the ballot?

Comment by Allen Skillicorn Monday, Nov 5, 12 @ 11:22 am

  12. Very generic, worthy of the C grade numerous other commenters gave it.

“Making college more affordable” - this statement peeves me. How could Congress possibly do anything about this when the feds borrow $1 of every $3 spent? Federal support for higher ed is going to have to decline, not increase, if deficit reduction is ever going to be taken seriously. This is just another empty promise.

  13. “‘Making college more affordable’ - this statement peeves me.” But if more people go to college, they wind up earning more money which means more tax revenues and the economy improves because there’s more money to spend. Doesn’t strike me as being any different from Republican trickle-down economics.

But getting back on topic…bland, boring, but props for being (a) positive and (b) not lying through her teeth.

Perhaps you might see some value in education as to the betterment of individual lives, rather than as just feed for an economic or government machine.

Kind of an Enlightenment viewpoint, but I hear the country’s founders dug those guys.

  15. Word: My bad…I forgot to put the “mildly sarcastic” sign on my comment.

  16. “Perhaps you might see some value in education as to the betterment of individual lives, rather than as just feed for an economic or government machine.”

Word, it’s really tough to see how individuals lives get better when they end up with $20k plus in student loan debt that is virtually impossible to get discharged and hangs over every decision in one’s life as a millstone where there’s literally no way out.

If Tammy really wanted to address the problem of student loans, she would be dedicating herself to making student load debt dischargable (or at least adjustable) under bankruptcy provisions.

This is a really serious problem, and the pols on both sides are basically ignoring it. But it affects household formation on at least 3 different major levels (marriages, forming families, and acquiring homes), and we need our political class to focus on that, and not just throwing more money into the system and enticing people to take on more student loan debt.

  17. “student loan debt”

Be nice if I could spell…

  18. Whatever. I can’t wait until Wednesday. Think maybe the Dems regret pushing Tammy so hard?!

Comment by Team Sleep Monday, Nov 5, 12 @ 2:28 pm

  19. Maybe we shouldn’t encourage kids to go tens of thousands of dollars into debt for degrees in hobbies. Yes, I would LOVE to study history, but I can I justify the cost???

How much tax revenue do you really expect to collect from indivuals with Art History or Theater degrees?

Comment by Allen Skillicorn Monday, Nov 5, 12 @ 2:57 pm

  20. Why encourage a college education when only 1 of 2 graduates will be employed after graduation-especially in today’s economy? Yes, like someone else said before anyone on either side of the isle could have run this ad; even Joe W.

Comment by ChicagoDem Monday, Nov 5, 12 @ 3:27 pm

  21. By “making college more affordable”, does she want to control the budgets of colleges and universities where tuition has increased far ahead of the CPI? How will she do that? Or does she want to have the federal government offer more loans so that students will be debt until they are ready for retirement?

And at this point no one can question her. Brilliant!!

Comment by Darienite Monday, Nov 5, 12 @ 3:30 pm

  22. People complain about politics and politicians and want change then push someone like Duckworth who is a Pelosi wannabe. More of the same crap.
