* Robin Kelly appears to be doing well with fundraising. From a press release…
Robin Kelly, candidate for Illinois’ second Congressional district, released her fundraising numbers for the month of December this morning. After entering the race on December 2, Kelly had 29 days to raise funds before the end of the filing period, which closed December 31.
Kelly amassed a warchest of $200,209 from 514 individual supporters in that short period, reinforcing her status as a frontrunner.
* So, we have three African-American women and eight African-American men and one white woman with high name recognition from her time in Congress and her bid against Jackson last year. If Halvorson can raise a few bucks and doesn’t run an awful campaign, you have to consider her the current frontrunner. Halvorson received 29 percent of the vote against Jackson last March. She probably doesn’t even need that much to win in such a crowded primary.
But, hey, it’s politics, baby, so anything can happen. Stay tuned.

Last week, state Sen. Toi Hutchinson announced raising more than $130,000
“While December is traditionally the most difficult fundraising month of the year, I’m so humbled by the outpouring of support I’ve received in the last four weeks,” Hutchinson said in a statement.

If the law hasn’t changed, and I know they were considering it, Halverson appears to be trying the “file last for bottom” position, so Halverson will have an even better shot, hopefully aleviating the possible “mis-votes”

The state GOP would be crazy not to recruit — and support — a black candidate in this race.
If you’re serious about expanding the tent, it’s the place to start.

robin kelly’s 200k isn’t bad for someone who *some* people say can’t raise money. (of course, the reason they say that seems to be self-serving, but still)
the kelly campaign collected ~3500 signatures, to boot, so pretty solid metrics all the way around…

The ILGOP has had so many opportunities to move the ball forward in expanding the tent, I honestly, no joke, don’t believe that the ILGOP sees openings like this as “opportunities”, and likewise, I mock their lame, feeble, attempts to LOOK like the ILGOP is open to expansion, but really hope that the “candidate” gets blown out, so the ILGOP can say, “When we try, it fails, so why try?”
I am half kidding about Sam Admam, Jr., but at least the ILDems would take some pause with a candidate with some name recognition and a following, somethng the ILGOP will not field, thus far, in this Special Primary and Special Election.
Screaming in the Wind is not going to get old, I guess.

Joyce Washington is like the female “Dock Walls”.
David Miller has made the decision not to run according to a report from WVON.
I get the feeling that if Debbie Halvorson were to win the primary, Lenny McCallister might would have a better showing in the race than predicted. Not win the election, but just garner a few unexpected votes.

Besides Lenny McAllister, that race has at least two other black republican candidates, Diane Harris and James Taylor. Beverly Reid is a republican candidate, but I don’t know her race.

Looks like another good argument for nonpartisan elections with a run-off for the top two.
The District is gerrymandered – city and suburban– to be a safe Democratic seat. In a partisan primary, the winner will be the Democrat who most appeals to the left, where the party is centered. On the other hand, in a non-partisan primary, the winners will be the two candidates who most appeal to the whole electorate in the District.
The incidental result of gerrymandering and partisan elections is the population of legislative bodies by extreme partisans of both parties and by few moderates capable of legislative compromises.
I think we have seen this movie before.

Note also that Debbie is the only one running who had the guts to take on J3 in the primary. She is also the only one with any base in those parts of the District outside of Cook County. She is also the only one (as of this writing) who is not African American. Oh, and she’s also the only one who has already served in Congress. In a zillion-candidate primary, I like her chances.

Halvorson waited until 5:00, presumably to be at the bottom of the ballot, but she has competition from four other Dems for the bottom spot.
