  1. Rich, Reuters has a good ScibbleLive feed on their website. You might just want to link to that:

  2. ABC reported that injuries are severe, and a temporary morgue has been set up on site. Mass Genl has admitted only a few people but with severe-critical injuries. Two explosions, may have been in a car(s) less than 100 feet from race route.

  3. ABC News has been talking to runners and participants. Several report seeing severed limbs.

  4. EC, thanks. I incorporated theirs into mine.

Comment by Rich Miller Monday, Apr 15, 13 @ 3:02 pm

  5. The cowardly punks who did this, for whatever twisted reason, picked the wrong town if they want to scare anyone.

They have no game and they are losers.

Boston is where this country was born, is and has been a beacon of freedom for tens of millions for hundreds of years, and that won’t change, no matter how many bombs go off.

Boston is where Benjamin Franklin was born: ”Those who would trade in their freedom for their protection deserve neither.”

Comment by wordslinger Monday, Apr 15, 13 @ 3:04 pm

  6. “Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”

Comment by Out Here In The Middle Monday, Apr 15, 13 @ 3:09 pm

  7. NBC reporting Boston PD preliminary report of only one IED was used in this attack. Reports of more than one may be reverberations off of buildings, etc. Other reports are that there were two explosions.

Two confirmed dead 23 seriously injured.

Comment by Nearly Normal Monday, Apr 15, 13 @ 3:12 pm

  8. It’s being reported on the radio that the Internet scammers are already out there, spamming e-mail asking for donations for “Boston relief.”

There are no legitimate “new” relief funds out there. Don’t give them money. Red Cross, Salvation Army, always your best bets.

What despicable people. There is not a prison cell or corner of hell cold enough for these monsters Internet scammers.

Sounds like the Boston police are really on it.

Let’s all get behind Boston as a country, and not hang them up over politics like we did with Jersey and New York with Hurricane Sandy.

Comment by wordslinger Monday, Apr 15, 13 @ 3:14 pm

  9. Boston, as the Center of the American Revolution, both in thought and action, is not going to back down and cower the American way of life because of an act of cowardice.

My thoughts and prayers are for the victims, the city of Boston, and our country.

Comment by Oswego Willy Monday, Apr 15, 13 @ 3:18 pm

  10. Penn. Ave closed in front of the White House as a security measure.

Counter-terrism experts reported saying there was more than one device used.

Comment by Nearly Normal Monday, Apr 15, 13 @ 3:22 pm

  11. It is Patriots Day in New England. That has a great deal of meaning. Those who set off the bombs are nothing approaching patriots. they are murderers and cowards.

Comment by Amalia Monday, Apr 15, 13 @ 3:35 pm

  12. Rich, I will say that the Scribble feed here is as informative as any source on this atrocity. Thank you for this service.

Comment by Boone Logan Square Monday, Apr 15, 13 @ 3:47 pm

  13. I am sorry to say that we, as a nation, have reached a point of no return. By that I mean we are so polarized that the comments on the Boston Herald website are about the gun rights debate, or anti-Obama sentiment that I want to puke. Very few (of the early posts) are about the well-being of those injured. Of course, no surprise, the Boston Herald article was link via Drudge. Such vile!

My thoughts and prayers are with the injured and with the casulties’ families.

Comment by Knome Sane Monday, Apr 15, 13 @ 3:50 pm

  14. A third bomb has been confirmed. This is an on-going event.

Comment by Say again Monday, Apr 15, 13 @ 3:54 pm

  15. The Boston Police Commissioner just said that ATF is assisting Boston Police in the effort to figure out what happened. The ATF is regularly thwarted at the national level by lack of budget support and Senate votes for agency leadership that are held up by opposition. The ATF is helping today, it’s what they do. Wonder why people are suspicious of those who fight the ATF?

Comment by Amalia Monday, Apr 15, 13 @ 3:58 pm

  16. The fact that the JFK library explosion is probably connected worries me. There could be more devices planted elsewhere.

Comment by Wensicia Monday, Apr 15, 13 @ 3:59 pm

  17. Boston PD Press Conference asks people to be cautious and not to congregate in large groups. Two explosives were detonated 50 to 100 yards apart. There was a third explosion outside the JKF Presidential Library with no injuries reported a short time after the first two.

Comment by Nearly Normal Monday, Apr 15, 13 @ 4:01 pm

  18. JFK library fire was mechanical and is not considered connected, Wensicia. Good news.

Call me paranoid, but the fact that this was done on Patriots Say and tax filing day makes me more than a little suspicious that this is a home-grown single looney or group. Authorities supposedly have recovered an intact device, and may have CCTV footage.

Sad day. My husband ran Boston years ago, and we have friends running this year who are thankfully okay.

Comment by Archiesmom Monday, Apr 15, 13 @ 4:06 pm

  19. @Archiesmom, no, the Boston PD Comm said there was a third explosion and it was at the JFK Library. Logan Airport shut down.

Comment by Amalia Monday, Apr 15, 13 @ 4:09 pm

  20. I used this to find out if a friend was running today. Thankfully, she wasn’t. http://baa.org/individual.html

  21. @Chavez-respecting Obamist, thanks so much for that link! still wondering if two friends were watching the race. the Newtown families were being honored at mile marker 26 with a sign for the 26 victims. sad again.

Comment by Amalia Monday, Apr 15, 13 @ 4:16 pm

  22. To the deleted moron. You’ve crossed a very bright line. Not only are you banned for life, but I’m coming at you.

Comment by Rich Miller Monday, Apr 15, 13 @ 4:17 pm

  23. FYI - Jason Rudis, former HGOP/Comptroller staffer, ran the B marathon today and is ok along with his family acocrding to his FB post.

Comment by Abe the Babe Monday, Apr 15, 13 @ 4:19 pm

  24. I just heard, NBC is reporting the JFK library incident was a fire, not an explosion.

Comment by Wensicia Monday, Apr 15, 13 @ 4:34 pm

  25. My thoughts and prayers are also for the victims and their families, and for law enforcement and medical staff who so bravely and ably help in such tragic events.

The NY Post reported that there is a Saudi national suspect, but that has not been confirmed and this point should probably not be taken as fact.

Comment by Grandson of Man Monday, Apr 15, 13 @ 4:40 pm

  26. Unity and love will defeat nihilism and hate. Pray for Boston.

  28. Tufts Medical was on lockdown but that seems to be over.

    Comment by Chavez-respecting Obamist Monday, Apr 15, 13 @ 4:59 pm

  29. Experts commenting now that bombs packed relatively small power, perhaps indicating amateur construction.

Comment by Arthur Andersen Monday, Apr 15, 13 @ 5:09 pm

  30. now that we know the Boston police commander was incorrect about the JFK incident, what about the other three incidents, the two explosions and the one device recovered unexploded….where were they located? two bombs that went off were in garbage cans, the first one nearest the race on Boylston, the second away from the street, as in the direction in which those affected would run. and did run after the first went off. where was the third?

no one has taken responsibility for this destruction. the videos are harrowing. prayers for the victims.

Comment by Amalia Monday, Apr 15, 13 @ 5:26 pm

  31. Terrible event. God bless our Massachusetts first responders helping out all the injured.

Comment by Jake from Elwood Monday, Apr 15, 13 @ 5:27 pm

  32. Cooler bombs maybe? Horrific.

Comment by redleg Monday, Apr 15, 13 @ 5:33 pm

  33. The Boston Marathon is a prestige American event that is known throughout the world and brought watchers, participants and media presence from around the globe to Boston today. I believe this key fact may end up being the best early clue as to which type of known terrorist group would most “benefit” from worldwide publicity for this dastardly act.

Comment by Responsa Monday, Apr 15, 13 @ 5:34 pm

  34. remember the first reports about the Oklahoma City bombing? that a Middle Eastern man was responsible? we all know how that turned out. terrorism is terrorism, whether international or domestic. the President is treating this as terrorism. we just don’t know where the terrorist/s are from.

Comment by Amalia Monday, Apr 15, 13 @ 5:49 pm

  35. What a sad day it is. I have heard reports that the type of bombs used are: the first bomb causes injuries and the second bomb kills the first responders. How can anyone do this, those who are injured or died are our mothers, fathers, sisters, and brothers. I am the parent of a first responder and I am scared.

Comment by Ggal Monday, Apr 15, 13 @ 5:56 pm

  36. @Ggal, hope your first responder stays safe out there! thanks for the service.

Comment by Amalia Monday, Apr 15, 13 @ 5:58 pm

  37. This is opinion.

    The facts:

    Patriot Day in Boston.

    April 15th; Tax Day

Last Mile of Boston Marathon dedicated to Newtown victims.

I believe these coincidences point to domestic terrorists.

Comment by PublicServant Monday, Apr 15, 13 @ 7:50 pm

  38. Or a lone wolf Domestic Terrorist in my opinion.

Comment by PublicServant Monday, Apr 15, 13 @ 7:51 pm

  39. i am a former military military member it seems unfortunate that maybe we might have to use bomb sniffing dogs along event routes like this i hope they get these dirt bags

Comment by fake county chairman Monday, Apr 15, 13 @ 8:07 pm

  40. It is way to early to know who or why regarding this act- but air time and internet space is to be filled.I want to speculate, but I will keep my typing fingers in check. That video of the the 78 year old marathoner falling down will be seen a million times and he is already getting interviewed in many places. The guy in red in front of him ducked a little and kept on running to the finish line. No interviews for him I wonder.

Comment by Lost in the Weeds Monday, Apr 15, 13 @ 10:07 pm

  41. This is yet another sad day for America. May we continue to have the strength to persevere. My thoughts and prayers go out to those afflicted by this tragedy.

Comment by Jorge Tuesday, Apr 16, 13 @ 12:35 am

  42. My thoughts are with those in Boston. This is not a time for partisanship, this was an attack on Americans. Whoever is responsible, whether domestic or foreign, is a coward and deserves death.

Comment by FormerParatrooper Tuesday, Apr 16, 13 @ 6:35 am

  43. Anyone who has done a race (even a 5k), participated as a volunteer, or been there for a friend knows these are lovely, peaceful events that are about people trying to accomplish something. It’s so difficult to consider the horror of all of this.

Comment by Belle Tuesday, Apr 16, 13 @ 7:38 am

  44. love that Tribune Sports page tribute to the teams in Boston. fantastic thoughts in the face of the horror.

Comment by Amalia Tuesday, Apr 16, 13 @ 8:13 am

  45. May th4 Good Lord bless all of those fellow Americans so horribly affected by this–to say the least–profound tragedy which is an affront to us all…!
