so interesting that Reuters reports that CNN and AP say arrest and NBC(so that means MSNBC) and CBS say there is not. what about Fox? wonder why Reuters leaves them out. yes, inside baseball, but I’m so nervous watching all of this coverage, hoping for some justice, that I’m trying for any kind of tangential distraction!

Boston Globe says suspect being taken to federal district court. I think that’s standard in bombings. Massachusetts does not have a death penalty, the federales do.

@Cincinnatus, actually, I always check Fox and they were talking arrest and claiming their videotape helped in the effort. snark is always relaxing. I know someone who was in the medical tent getting assistance when the bombing happened and the wounded then came in and his family his very freaked out. me too.

They just announced they’ve solved those horrible killings of the Texas prosecutors and filed capital murder charges. It would be a great day’s work if law enforcement can provide answers and make arrests in the Boston bombings today, too.

Some reporters at CNN and the Boston Globe are really sweating bullets right now. It’s only the biggest story in the country….
Years ago, I dealt with a police spokesman who had a problem with the language. He equated “electrocution” with “electrical shock” and “drowned” with “passed out in the water.”
Luckily, I checked with the medical examiner in both cases. Always check it out.

Well, ONE thing’s for sure–they’re really onto SOMEthing big here, hot on the Trail, and if the individual is going anywhere, it WOULD be the U.S. Courthouse (as Wordslinger surmised above) ‘cuz SOMEbody’s going to be facing the ultimate punishment for this Crime Against Humanity–there’ll be no life in prison for this/these culprits…!

Everybody who can deny that an arrest has been made has denied it - FBI, Boston PD, Justice Department and the White House. The rush to be first is a powerful and often stupid force.

Same link has been going to both AP stories… weird computer glitch?

Seems the media consensus as of 5 minutes ago was that there is no arrest yet, but there is possibly a suspect who was id’d via a Lord & Taylor security video and there was possibly a separate threat at the Boston courthouse.
(That particular Lord & Taylor is apparently located between the two blast sites.)
…Anonymous law enforcement official speaking on background saying suspect in custody vs. Federal investigators going on record saying no arrest yet.
You decide.

“Contrary to widespread reporting, there have been no arrests made in connection with the Boston Marathon attack. Over the past day and a half, there have been a number of press reports based on information from unofficial sources that has been inaccurate. Since these stories often have unintended consequences, we ask the media, particularly at this early stage of the investigation, to exercise caution and attempt to verify information through appropriate official channels before reporting.”

from my news watching, it started with the AP saying there was an arrest. from there, CNN and Fox News went with it. MSNBC and NBC did not.

this says that there is no arrest, but it gives a description of the action and the person of interest.
it’s not just CNN having a bad day….that is a really interesting inside baseball narrative being floated. AP then CNN then Fox all had the arrest story. on Fox, Hemmer was out in the field and a female anchor said there was an arrest.
since I cannot imagine that one network just parrots another, it’s Fox that can get slammed too.

Sen. Kirk was one of four Republicans to vote for expanding universal background checks. To me this is the second courageous thing he has done recently, and I congratulate him. The law would have extended background checks to online sales and gun shows.
I though it was a no-lose situation for Republicans to vote for it, because there’s strong public support for universal background checks. But gun organizations threatened to run Republicans out of office for voting yes. Some Republicans believe that people should show IDs to vote (even though there’s not much evidence of this type of fraud), yet they support people walking into gun shows and buying lethal weapons without IDs and background checks.

I believe the media, when they flood the area with reporters/commentators, not only confuse the public with pre-mature and false reports, they interfere with the investigation. They also make themselves look pretty stupid. Back off and let law enforcement do their work.

FBI press conference in Boston has been postponed. Videos show an individual dropping off a bag at the site of the second bombing. Person seen walking away talking on cellphone. Can try to trace calls via closest cell tower to scene.

Much of this confusion seems to be caused by the ambiguity regarding “arrest.” Many people think it’s equivalent to “charged” or even “taken into custody,” and the words have different meaning. The truth will likely be that someone is in custody, and is being interrogated, probably rather aggressively. Those news outlets who reported an arrest were likely getting leaks from law enforcement that merely reflected that the individual was being questioned. It may end up being unfortunate that it was leaked, since they might have been able to get better information if they were not working under the glare of a huge media interest.

In reading some of the Chinese nationals’ comments about the 3rd murder victim (a Chinese grad student) many of them are applauding our open media and the transparency of our news process.
I’d rather have some early, wrong reports in our national media that get quickly corrected than to have the Chinese version…
Democracy can be messy.
As Amalia points out there are other options out there for those with a keen interest in a deeper dive into the news and even the news about the “news” when the media itself becomes the story (Reddit, etc.).
