* A bizarre night in the Boston area as one of the bombing suspects is shot dead in a firefight with police. The other suspect is reportedly still at large. Progress Illinois was live-blogging the craziness last night. Go check it out if you’re not up to speed. NBC also has a good roundup.

In case anyone is unaware, almost all the radio traffic for most cities can be monitored over the web with just a few seconds delay. Basically a virtual police scanner.
This is the link to the virtual scanner for actual Boston Police, Fire & EMS:

Thanks, RNUG, but it looks like we also need Watertown.

Rich,
The Watertown feed status is “making repairs”. I don’t know if it is deliberately off the air (by request of LE) right now or not. Seem to be picking up part of the activity on the Boston feed.

We seem to remember Capt. Fax spent time in this region a few years, perhaps he can offer some expert point of view on these suspected nut jobs

Boston has gone offline now.

Coppers putting their lives on the line to protect the public, like they do every day.
I’m guessing we won’t seen any editorials about extravagant public employee pensions for a couple of days, maybe.

I don’t know if I’ve ever seen media coverage to this level. Had the John Wilkes Booth manhunt occurred in the digital age I imagine it would have looked like this.

who is the third person in custody? also, wow, a student at U. Mass Dartmouth on the loose and the one killed a former Bunker Hill Community College student. are they lone wolf disgruntled? or sleeper cell?

Report on CNN says the police believe the suspect has a laptop. That’s probably why the Boston area scanner feeds are down … the Boston area police have asked all the media to embargo certain information.

I found two good sites for live feeds–
http://live.boston.com/Event/Live_blog_Explosion_in_Copley_Square
and the London Telegraph has been following this all night–
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/10002469/Boston-Marathon-bombs-live.html
I found the latter when I started reading the newspaper on my Kindle Fire last night. Didn’t gotten much sleep last night.

I read that they silenced the Boston scanners due to all the Tweets. Don’t want to give the last bomber any more info.

Two people living in the same house as the brothers have been taken into custody for questioning. Appears there is more than one apartment in the house.
Looking for a car with Massachusetts plates.
FBI talking to an uncle who lives in Maryland to gain more info.

for anyone interested in flooding, the Trib is live blogging that. apparently the worst flooding is in Des Plaines, Lemont, Naperville, Algonquin, with rivers cresting. and yet I could swear I saw some snow. what a day.

Uncle being interviewed. Has not had much contact with the bomber’s family for a few years. Called them losers who did not assimilate and were jealous of those who made it in the states.

Ain’t that just the sad truth.

Car sought was found no clear connection to the bomber.
It has been reported that the brothers were out of the country in the past six months flew to Russia. Dzhokar became a US citizen on Sept 11, 2012.

Also on NBC New York website–
Tsarnaev was killed amid the shootout with police early Friday. The manhunt was continuing for his brother, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was born on July 22, 1993, the records show. They also said he flew to the U.S. on April 12, 2002 with his family, which applied for asylum. The family was granted legal permanent residence on March 2, 2007, and Tsarnaev became a citizen on Sept. 11, 2012.
The documents show there is no record of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev leaving the United States

I’ve been wondering this too. Hope they take the younger brother alive to give them a better chance of figuring out whether others were involved in the planning, but I’m not optimistic.
