*** UPDATED x1 *** Sandack withdraws

Posted in:

* I think the only guy who thought he might have a chance was Rep. Sandack himself…

.@wbez exclusive: @ronsandack withdraws name from #ILGOP chairman search, citing his support for gay marriage #tcot

— WBEZ (@WBEZ) May 15, 2013

*** UPDATE *** Statement

After much contemplation and discussion with several Republican activists, I am withdrawing my name from future consideration. I look forward to working with the new Chairman and together focusing on rebuilding a Republican brand. As I have stated several times, we must be more inclusive to revive and revitalize our party.

  1. Wel, I am glad “gay marriage” wasn’t discussed, or used in a negative light again …

  2. They need to ask Willy.

Comment by Norseman Wednesday, May 15, 13 @ 12:25 pm

  3. Didn’t Rep. Sandack get the memo? Sen. Oberweis said this whole snafu — going on how many weeks now in the media? — had nothing to do with gay marriage.

  4. WBEZ “exclusive”? Sandack had it on FB nearly an hour ago.

Comment by Raymond Wednesday, May 15, 13 @ 12:34 pm

  5. He should resubmit application with the Democrats.

Sandack is a supporter of massive gambling expansion, is pro-undocumented citizen agenda, and of course pro-gay marriage. He’ll be great leading the other side. Free Mike Madigan up a bit.

  6. - Norseman -,

You may not believe this, but I got a copy of the very long and detailed “Chairman Questionnaire”.

On Page 34, Paragraph VI, Subsection iii, “the question” reads …

“Please, tell us you are NOT Oswego Willy.”

So, I guess the Committee is “going in a different direction.”

Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, May 15, 13 @ 12:38 pm

  7. Hey, “too obvious,” how come when Democrats have sharp disagreements over policy they don’t threaten to throw each other out of their party?

Has Kwame Raoul called Brandon Phelps a Republican or a DINO because he supports the NRA? No.

Has Lou Lang called for the ouster of Mike Madigan as Speaker because Madigan sponsored a pension bill that the unions and Lang hate?

Has Dan Kotowski demanded that Gary Forby become a Republican because Forby is pro-life?

You folks are so mindlessly petulant. Continue on this way and you’ll be able to hold a statewide caucus in a Denny’s men’s room.

  8. ===in a Denny’s men’s room. ===

During the early bird special, of course.

Comment by Rich Miller Wednesday, May 15, 13 @ 12:47 pm

  9. - Rich Miller -

    Spot on!

The main problem with Sandack withdrawing is NOT that Sandack is withdrawing …

Is the FACT that many in MY Party will respond as - too obvious - has, and any idea that diversity of thought in My Party is not something that can be seen as “productive”!

Cripes, we are “glad” someone who can unite My Party has chosen to withdraw becuause of “issues” that can’t be worked out?

We want someone like a “Sandack” to apply to be the Dem Chair? Really? Is it because the 80% we can agree with Sandack is not enough?

When are we going to learn… ANYTHING?

Are we going to learn when it’s too late? Guess what, that “too late” train is fueling up…

But as long as we are “Pure” …

Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, May 15, 13 @ 12:48 pm

  10. == Continue on this way and you’ll be able to hold a statewide caucus in a Denny’s men’s room.==

Ironically, based on their recent national party gaffes, some might take a “wide stance” on the issue and vote their conscience anyway.

Comment by Newsclown Wednesday, May 15, 13 @ 12:54 pm

  11. == You folks are so mindlessly petulant. Continue on this way and you’ll be able to hold a statewide caucus in a Denny’s men’s room. ==

Well said! The male GOP Senators can already fit.

Is it fair to presume that Sandack’s support for marriage equality doomed his shot at the chairmanship?

Comment by reformer Wednesday, May 15, 13 @ 12:57 pm

  12. Saying the party needs to be more inclusive while excluding himself from consideration seems counter-productive.

    But maybe that’s the point.

    Comment by G. Willickers Wednesday, May 15, 13 @ 1:02 pm

  13. What this proves is that Sandack is smart enough to read and understand the implications census data as well as polling. I actually like him though our policies are not always congruent. He’s Libertarian-Republican, but fiscally still firmly conservative and markets-focused. He’s like a fusion of the key parts of Dem and Gop, and that works well in a centrist state like ours.

Comment by Newsclown Wednesday, May 15, 13 @ 1:06 pm

  14. Every week we go through this drill.

Many in the GOP, and some Dems, treat partisanship like a religion.

In churches, temples, synagogues and mosques around the globe there is constant branching because of disagreements in belief.

Partisanship is about winning elections with people whom agree with you on a majority of issues, but not on every issue.

Political litmus tests = lost elections.

Comment by Endangered Moderate Species Wednesday, May 15, 13 @ 1:10 pm

  15. Sandeck is nearly as smart as Matt Murphy.
He got his name off the list before it was revealed and showed DeadBeatJoe’s name on it

Sandeck took about 24 hours to get out of the clown car

Still waiting for someone to drop and announce they are joining the Green Party?

BTW how will Billbaords endorsement of Gags work out in the bid for AG?

  16. The longer this drags on, and the more candidates emerge/withdraw, the worse it makes the Party look.

  17. Really crossing my fingers for a Joe Walsh Reign of Terror. He’ll give the crazies what they want.

  18. Sandack is a supporter of massive gambling expansion, is pro-undocumented citizen agenda, and of course pro-gay marriage.

You mean like much of the suburbs (where elections are won in this state0?

Comment by LincolnLounger Wednesday, May 15, 13 @ 1:45 pm

  19. Murphy, and many others, just said no. Sandack milks it, and makes a drama out of it, taking several days Astroturfing his “nomination”. That was dumb, and a pompous withdrawal letter for a job never offered fits right in.

    Comment by DanL60 Wednesday, May 15, 13 @ 2:18 pm

  20. The problem with Sandack is that he flip-flops and he seems to change his position based upon campaign support needs. He can’t be trusted as a GOP or a Dem.

Comment by Informed Observer Wednesday, May 15, 13 @ 2:28 pm

  21. I’ve know Ron for some time. He is not above persuassion. He is regularly elected and although there are detractors for his change in postition, most of the supporters I know are not bothered by his changes. There was an attempt to make this an issue when he ran for house last election and he trounced his opponent. I think he represents the better face of my party than Obie but a long shot!

Comment by Lisle Mike Wednesday, May 15, 13 @ 2:41 pm

  22. represents my party better than Obie by a long shot! (fat fingers mistype)

Comment by Lisle Mike Wednesday, May 15, 13 @ 2:42 pm

  23. Sandack didn’t exactly trounce his opponent for the house. His own little neighborhood accounted for his entire 1000 vote victory and most of those were Dems. Go figure.

Comment by Mr Mike Wednesday, May 15, 13 @ 4:29 pm

  24. - Mr Mike -,

    Did he win?

Yeah, that’s what I thought, he won.

So a Republican, savy enough to know how to win, how to gather enough of a voting block to win… is not good enough to just be a Republican?

I never understand, so Rep. Sandacks voters, are THEY now required to take “Blood Oaths” and “Litmus Tests” too to vote for a Republican?

Geez, Louise, the number of members in the GA GOP is small enough as it is, now we are going to questions the “voters”, and see if the “voters” are worthy enough to vote for a Republican, because this WINNING Republican isn’t …”Republican” … enought?

I read these posts and wonder, “How few and how ‘pure’ do we have to be to still be relevent in politcal discussions AND appease the Slytherin House members?”

Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, May 15, 13 @ 4:37 pm

  25. I know this will be a disappointment to the “Usual Suspects”, but Sandack couldn’t be elected Chairman because the new Chairman needs to be someone who can unite a party that is divided over social issues - LIKE THE REST OF THE STATE IS. He is branded on one end of the spectrum like Walsh is on the other side. Electing either one as Chairman only proliferates a debate for which there is no resolution. The bad news for you guys is to find out Republicans are human. When the electorate gets that message - change will be forthcoming.
