Cullerton biting his tongue.

Madigan: “We’ve known each other many years, but this is the first time you ever came to me for counsel or for help. I can’t remember the last time that you invited me to your house for a cup of coffee, even though my wife is godmother to your only child. But let’s be frank here. You never wanted my friendship. And, uh, you were afraid to be in my debt…. You found paradise in [the senate], you had a good trade, you made a good living. The police protected you and there were courts of law. You didn’t need a friend like me. But, now you come to me, and you say: “Don Madigan, call my bill.” But you don’t ask with respect. You don’t offer friendship. You don’t even think to call me Godfather.”

I, Mike Madigan, am the One. You do not need to listen to any others, for they are false idols before thee.

JC: “Damn hiccups.”

Madigan: “So when we couldn’t reach a compromise, and John just kept talking about his damn bill, I had no recourse but to sew his lips shut.”

MM: As the longer tenured legislator here, and as speaker of the house, oh, and did I mention: Illinois State Democratic Chairman, i know that Senate President Cullerton and I are fully on the same page. Isn’t that right, John?….

Cullerton bites his tongue as Madigan reinforces his point that it’s all about what I say the State should do. Cullerton doesn’t matter.

No, as has been widely reported, I don’t own a cell phone. But if I did, I’d keep it right here, near where my heart used to be.
Comment by 47th Ward Monday, Jun 17, 13 @ 2:59 pm
In a brief moment of clarity, Cullerton remembered the wise words of another president.
“Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.”
Madigan, however, was not so lucky.

I said that I would see you because I had heard that you were a serious man, to be treated with respect. But I must say no to you and let me give you my reasons. It’s true I have a lot of friends in politics, but they wouldn’t be so friendly if they knew my business was raising taxes instead of slashing pensions which they consider a harmless vice. But taxes, that’s a dirty business.

“A lot of holes in the desert, and a lot of problems are buried in those holes. But you gotta do it right. I mean, you gotta have the hole already dug before you show up with a package in the trunk. Otherwise, you’re talking about a half-hour to forty-five minutes worth of digging. And who knows who’s gonna come along in that time? Pretty soon, you gotta dig a few more holes. You could be there all effin’ night.”

Cullerton: “Speaker Madigan met with the other four leaders at Saputos today. Now the really good thing about meeting Speaker Madigan at Saputos is the food. They put you in this little room with just about anything you’d want to eat or drink. But since, number one, I wasn’t hungry but thirsty, and number two, they was free, I must have drank me about 15 Dr. Peppers.”

Morpheus: The Matrix is a system, Neo. That system is our enemy. But when you’re inside, you look around, what do you see? Businessmen, teachers, lawyers, carpenters. The very minds of the people we are trying to save. But until we do, these people are still a part of that system and that makes them our enemy. You have to understand, most of these people are not ready to be unplugged. And many of them are so inured, so hopelessly dependent on the system, that they will fight to protect it.
