Daley plans to speak to reporters at 10:30 11 o’clock (he changed the time). He’s criticized Quinn for failing to get involved in the concealed carry negotiations, and has expressed outrage over the failure to pass pension reform. So, he’ll have plenty to talk about.

I’m sure with him it’ll be more like a quick stop at midway for a short hop to the Cap City airport. If only Meigs field were still open…the real airport of choice for the wealthy.

This afternoon, following adjournment of the special session, Gov. Quinn will surely unveil his “consequences.” Now Bill Daley will make the news cycle more complicated for Quinn. Perhaps the ineffectual nature of governing through press conference, and failing to engage the legislative process in a meaningful way, will be part of the story line in the mainstream media, thanks to Daley. This is good positioning for Daley, who will surely seek to persuade voters that he would be a more effective manager for a state in dire need of solving big problems.

If Daley chooses to fly, which I agree would be the choice for something like this, does that mean we have “fly over” counties for the campaign too?
I was just giving directions just in case his GPS was not working in whatever car/truck/bus Daley might be using for ground travel. I like to help where I can.

Hey Bill Daley. Here’s a quick lesson on the failure to pass pension reform. Its important to note that I am not a Quinn supported. First of all, Quinn was instrumental in creating Tier 2, which did save the state over $100B in contributions through 2045. With that being said:
Benefit reform is un-Constitutional. Article 13, Section 5 clearly states this. Pragmatic legislators realize this, which is why they have yet to come to a true agreement on this issue. The legislature knows this is the most courageous vote they will ever take. They take an oath to uphold the Constitution, legitimate legislators take that oath seriously. Legislative leaders have done a good job in delaying the passage of such bill to shield their members from the wrath of voter retribution, although their performance hasn’t fooled the bond ratings agencies nor the Tribune.
Even if the courage/will is there and the legislature does pass a bill, the Courts will deem such bill to have violated the pension dimishment clause and the most courageous vote they have ever taken will have been for naught. How is that going to play in your districts?
The Courts are not going to buy into the claim that the “sky is falling” in Illinois. The Courts are too smart to believe that this is the last option for the state to correct its financial mismanagement. The problem is that too many politicians want to address this issue in hopes to free up more cash to spend on programs that play well with constituents.
Inexperienced politicans looking to use this issue to catapult to higher office will quickly learn that pushing for severe benefit cuts is no way to climb the political ladder. This is an emotional issue for public employees, who will remember who tried to destory their retirement nest egg at the polls. The majority of non-public employee voters have no clue on this issue and will not decide to vote for a candidate based upon their policy towards pension reform.

Bill Daley was the guy at Ameritech (with the help of a friendly IL legislature) who pushed thru the largest rate hike in Ameritech history.

You don’t know that to be the case. I would say it depends a great deal on what the plan looks like. I have a stake in this so I don’t say this lightly but you are sticking your head in the sand by pretending that there is no problem and that there can be absolutely no solution to that problem. You can work to solve the problem or you can continue to stomp your feet and pound your chest about doing nothing about the problem. Your choice.

+1. Very succinct, thoughtful analysis. And, as the days go on and on, the “crisis” appears more and more not to be so - courts will certainly determine that many things short of abrogating contracts and violating the Constitution can be done to solve the problem.

Exactly right, which is why your “unconstitutional” argument will generally fall on deaf ears at the polls.
Voters will go with whichever big pension idea sounds OK to them. Politicians will be favored for voting for big changes to pensions, not the other way around.

& here’s uR fix : tax the richest Illinoisans who have benefited from the regressive tax structure in this so-called blue state for years & tax the corporations who benefited from the tax payer give-aways that our legislator’s (in a startling bipartisan fashion)gave them when they have decided to (on multiple occasions over the past 20 years) not pay their contractual obligations (read: pension holidays) & give tax breaks to private companies - unlike public employees who have always paid toward their pensions out of every paycheck.
the real question here is…why should the folks who paid their obligations for years&years on time with no pouting get punished when the legislature (in an effort to give tax payer funded gifts to private companies ~ example Boeing got $60 million in tax breaks to move 50 employees to Chicago) failed to do the basic task of elected legislators, i.e. raise sufficient revenue to meet the state’s obligations?
wierd that the dems, the repubs, the big newspapers, the civic (sic) club & the chamber of commerce never talk about the reasons why the state’s pensions are not fully funded…oh yeah, they are co-conspirators.

Downstate could use a “Daley” dose of economic development … Just a reminder that during the Clinton-Gore Administration, in which Daley was prominent, 22 million jobs were created. I know his name downstate won’t be golden, but if he can remind people about his work with Bill Clinton (and Barack Obama) he can position himself fairly well. Springfield is giving him a HUGE opening.

I’m not saying there isn’t a solution. Tax retirement income, eliminate tax interest friendly tax credits, increase state revenues, amend the constitution, eliminate public employee retirement income. My point is, whatever solution we are talking about will be painful/controversial. The legislature has gone out of its way to take the controversial/painful approach.

Pat Quinn is a piñata today. Daley is smart to get into that cue and take his shot, because, why not?
If Quinn can turn all of these swings at him into some hay as the guy advocating “for you”, then it won’t be too bad.
Can Quinn’s Crew do that, and spin it that way, almost “Blago-esque” and stave off today’s negatives? We will see soon enough, traffic notwithstanding.

Pat Quinn only needs to remind people that Bill Daley is a former Wall Street banker with JP Morgan Chase. This will not play well for Daley in any part of Illinois.

No pun intended, but “Oh, Brother!” (Rich, I mean Bill?–oh that’s right–they’re Daleys so it’s all in the Dynasty, I mean, Family…! Based on all of the hot air blown about, he should’ve just saved himself the trouble of the trip (cuz his NY Fat Cat Pal Mayor Bloomberg’s SURE, too, that Billy could’ve stopped the Override…right)!!
