13th congress campaign update: Erika Harold has $62K cash in bank; Rodney Davis, $702K on hand

Yeah, she just got into the race early last month, but that’s still horrible. The Democratic candidate, Ann Callis, raised $225K and had about $200K cash on hand. Callis announced in early May.
Announcing ain’t enough. You gotta put in the work.
* Meanwhile, freshman Democratic Congressman Brad Schneider raised $384K and had $531K cash on hand. Republican Bruce Dold outraised him with $546K and $616K cash on hand.
* Sen. Dick Durbin raised $1.27 million and had over $4.25 million on hand.
* And this is old news, but…
[Gov. Pat Quinn] raised about $1 million from April 1 to June 30 and now has $2.3 million in available funds.
Former White House Chief of Staff Bill Daley is the Chicago Democrat challenging Quinn in the March primary. He’s raised more than $796,000.
On the Republican side, venture capitalist Bruce Rauner of Winnetka brought in $916,000. But campaign expenses reduced his cash on hand to $642,000. State treasurer Dan Rutherford of Chenoa raised $433,000.
Republican State Sens. Bill Brady of Bloomington and Kirk Dillard of Hinsdale brought in $61,000 and $293,000, respectively.

Glad to see those Tim Johnson Ex-Staffers are making sure they don’t make Ms. Harold look foolish … Every day that Ms. Harold decides to continue this run against Rodney Davis, is another day Erika Harold makes all her hard work and preparing for “her turn to run” seem like a stunt, and not much more.
Congrats, Tim Johnson Ex-Staffers, you have reduced a well-accomplished, female, minority, Republican into an embarrassment of a candidate her first time out. How proud you must all be!

The Bill Brady number has been most surprising. He never really stopped running for governor, did he?
Obviously, he has name-recognition, but he’s going to have to get on TV.
And TV is going to be expensive. Rates will be sky-high with all these big-money campaigns driving the market.

Ouch! Bill Brady appears like he is going to have a tough hill to climb based on those dollar totals. Rutherford easily seems likely to be one of the stronger GOP contenders based on the $$$$..

No way Daley only spend $2,000 since his announcement! He didn’t poll? He hasn’t paid a vendor? Clearly he’s manipulating it so that it shows as much cash on hand as possible.

I think the poll was taken in the first quarter, but you may be right. Otherwise, I think most of his expenditures have been in July.

The money raised by Rutherford is good but the cash on hand of 1 million is the best of the four to date with Rauner burning through it so fast. The combined monies of the three will be enough to take Rauner down with all his bagage and the one of three to emerge after that will have the most money and ground operation. That easily looks like Rutherford right now.

Ground games are a funny thing. Right now is the building of the infastructure, which is untested given the race dynamics and the newness to the race.
The money tout is well-founded, there is a great deal left to be seen for any of the four when it comes to “showing” the ground game needed to win.

OW - you are right. However, the amount of people Rutherford meets on a weekly basis is staggering as no one works harder than this guy, especially with no wife and kids he would have to attend to. While that doesnt always translate it leads me to believe that he will have one of the best if not the best at the end.

Something’s up with Daley’s expenses. Pete Giangreco is quoted as a spokesman for the campaign, but is not listed as being paid by the campaign. Nor does it say that he’s donating his services as an in-kind. Furthermore, Daley’s campaign has a communication published on the Board of Elections website that says they misfiled an A-1. This is signed by Nick Daggers, a political consultant in IL. The signature notes that he is a “consultant” for the campaign, but the D-2 doesn’t list him as being paid by the campaign. There was also the announcement video, and it’s hard to believe that Daley did that all on his Powerbook’s iMovie. Did whomever make that video get paid yet?
Finally, everyone who has a Facebook has seen that Daley has paid for ads to get more likes on Facebook. They’re everywhere. But no expenditures are listed for Facebook ads.
The law requires the expenditures to be posted when the check is cut, or when the credit card used for a purchase is paid off. One could assume they’re pushing signing the checks for the consulting expenses to future quarters to make this quarter show big $, but how did they do that with the ads they’ve purchased so far?
Either way, there’s some fishy accounting going on with the Daley campaign.

The first test for the field organization part of a campaign is the petitions. Rutherford did a “good” job getting all the petitions out and about for the convention delegates, but showed “bad form” in the handling of the challenges for delegates.
Why am I going down this road?
Infastructures first test is getting their candidate enough signatures to get on the ballot, from “everywhere”, and in an orderly and structurally sound manner. Come petitons time, any or all the campaigns can tout their field organization by the results shown with the first test of petitions.
“Challenging” or even going down that road of a challenge of those delegates … will there be any resistence? I have no clue, and there my be none, but … it happened, and some memories are long.

If the poll was conducted in the first quarter, he would still have to declare it in the second quarter, assuming that he established the committee as soon as his “campaign expenses” or contributions exceeded the legal limit allowed without filing a D-1.
This is the first D-2 he’s filed and he lists no campaign expenses, despite having a sophisticated campaign infrastructure. Questionable at least.

The poll was conducted in April which means the bill is sitting 90 days. Very generous consultants apparentlyy, all of which agreed not to be paid for quite a while.

Erika Harold raised more money than Bill Brady? Not exactly encouraging on the part of Mr. Brady.
Unfortunately, those totals aren’t exactly encouraging for Ms. Harold, either. You’d think the selfish individuals (aka former Johnson staffers) who enticed her to run would have put a bit more effort into helping her get off to a strong start. So much for that.

one of the constants in Illinois politics is the summer before an election year political heartthrobs who end up busting before thanksgiving if not labor day. Erika Harold seems destined for that.
Schneider has the full backing of the DCCC, plus the ammo of OFA, and the White House. Dold doesn’t even have an NRCC commitment yet and there’s no guarantee he’ll get superpac reinforcements that propped him up in 2010 and 2012.
Nice to have a cycle without raja or dan seals.

Some of the Daley haters should refer to the Unclear on the concept tag line. Consultants get paid for the services they provide. Giangreco runs the best mail firm in the country and will get his money when the mail goes out. TV consultants are the same way. They make money off the buy. Should there be some expenses? Absolutely but if they haven’t billed him he can’t pay them. Remember that Quinn has hundreds of double exempt employees and their “volunteer” in-kind isn’t listed on his report.

You think there’s a chance the NRCC and the superpacs don’t back Dold? Why on earth wouldn’t they get involved in one of 2012s closest elections? Dold can raise money; he’s proven that. That’s why i thought there was a chance he might choose to run for Treasurer.

Not sure what to make of this statement but I agree that Rutherford works his tail off. On the other hand having a spouse with grown kids equals a bunch of surrogates. Even Dan can’t be in more than one place at a time.

I don’t put much into Daley having no expenses. As said before you can’t pay the bill until you have it. And as far as having a web site obviously some of you don’t know many people under 30. Most of them could put together a decent (maybe not great) web site in less than a day.

To your last point - maybe but this is not a presidential election, did bradys or dillards wife address larfe crowds last cycle? He will have plenty of surrogates.

Dillard pushing 300K is my biggest surprise - even as he was lining up donations to make a big splash, there must exist some overlap in the donor base of Rauner, Daley, and Dillard & to see a former primary defeat turn into a decent first quarter isn’t a bad showing.

Huh? Speaking of unclear on the concept….
What are you saying here? That campaigns are supposed to list their volunteers’ time as in-kind? That are, right now, hundred of State employees doing work for the Governor? Where? What are they doing?
But really, what are you talking about? Nice try at a deflection.
Point is very simple. Daley’s amount on-hand does not include A LOT of expenses already incurred. Quinn showed about $200,000 in expenses.
At best it’s an accounting trick by the Daley campaign that indicates they are willing to play fast and loose with the rules. At worst, they illegally misreporting their expenditures.

Bill Brady already has the necessary name recognition required due to his previous gubernatorial campaigns. Money will still be important for his campaign but not as much as it will be for the lesser known GOP gubernatorial candidates. However, he is going to have to do much better when it comes to raising money than what he appears to have done so far.

Ok, let’s look at the candidates….
Dillard, who ran against Brady last time can’t be considered “lesser known” considering Dillard has run statewide before …
Rutherford, who has WON statewide, can’t be considered “lesser known” given the past 2 1/2 years a Treasurer and the media Rutherford gets…
So that leaves Rauner, who IS going to probably outspend them all individually, and come close to outspending them, collectively….
My point?
This idea that Bill Brady’s money situation is “fine” given the field in the Primary is Folly. Rutherford and Rauner today have more cash and they are going to get the cash to work for them. Brady, along with Dillard, they, are going to need to think about this fall back of “Well, the voters know me” strategy as a losing proposition come commercial buy time and Brady and Dillard are not “up” as much as a Rutherford, and definitely not as much as a Rauner.
I agree with you, “he is going to have to do much better”, but you have to look at this realistically, there are no “leeser knowns” this time around and the “lesser known” has his own piggy bank if need be.
Food for thought…
