* As we all know, Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon announced her campaign for comptroller yesterday. A photo from an event…
Let’s all have a little lighthearted fun and welcome her to the campaign. Yesterday’s post got a bit nasty (some of it for good reason, but you should’ve gotten it outta your systems by now), so try to keep it light today.
* The Question: Caption?

“Yeah, Dillard told me to make the ‘IL’ in my first name a different color on those signs behind me. Then, it would’ve looked like they said ‘She a Simon.’ I thought about it. But I was afraid I’d be copying.”
Comment by Roamin' Numeral Thursday, Aug 1, 13 @ 11:33 am
Ms. Simon’s frumpy yellow jacket reminds me of a humiliating bathrobe my college roommie (’80s) never used (purchased by his mother). Maybe the ol’ gently used bathrobe has been recycled?
Therefore, a lengthy caption….”I’m on a tight campaign budget and found this yellow jacket shopping at Judy’s favorite thrift store.”

Look, I respect Eric Zorn, but he’s dead wrong about the clawhammer style. Classical banjo is played by clicking up on the strings with your fingers and down with your thumb. Like this.

No, no, no. It was all a big misunderstanding. I never wanted to run for Attorney General.
All those “spinmeisters” out there might want you to think so, but I have always dreamed of being Lieutenant Gov… I mean, Attorney Gen… I mean Comptroller of the State of Illinois.

Okay. Invest in a step and repeat banner, so that when you’re standing in front of it your whole name appears somewhere. Personally, I would go with white letters on a blue background — I think it makes for a better photo. (Most people don’t look their best in front of a white background.)
I know that name recognition may not seem like a big issue to you, but you need to remember that there is a big chunk of the electorate that didn’t live in Illinois when your dad was in office — and most young voters have no idea who he was. You want to make sure that every photo says “Sheila Simon.”
Then think strategically about what you’ll be wearing in front of that banner. If you stay with blue letters on a white background, then wear a blue dress or blazer. Too many of these comments are talking about your distracting yellow jacket; you want people to focus on you, not what you’re wearing.
I know that you’ll dismiss this advice as “shallow comments from a shallow image consultant.” But you’re up against a popular incumbent who has more money than you do. You need to make sure voters know who you are, and that they focus on your message instead of your clothes.
Sometimes the conventional wisdom is, well, wise.
