* From a Sheila Simon campaign e-mail…
Last week was an amazing experience. I drove from Chicago to Springfield and then home to a rally in Carbondale with my husband Perry and my campaign team to announce my candidacy for Illinois Comptroller.
We saw many old friends and met even more new supporters. People in Illinois are ready for accountability.
You can see our first official video in the comptroller campaign by clicking the image below:
I am so fortunate to have such amazing support all across Illinois. I’ve been working hard to respond to all the messages and emails I received after the announcement - to everyone out there, thank you!

Hmmm. I remember commenters debating was she flying or driving last week well we finally have the answer. I just want to know did her special relationship with Lisa Madigan allow her to speed on the highways.

Great video by Ken Snyder, but Sheila is just so dry and uninteresting during the parts where she is featured behind the podium. It’s also surreal that she continues to use the “my father = me” lines as the bedrock of her campaign. How long is that message going to last?
Comment by Empty Chair Thursday, Aug 8, 13 @ 9:54 am
Meh. Not bad. I’m not crazy about the blur-to-focus things, and I’m not sure all those pallid downstate faces help you in a Democratic primary.
And the going backwards out of Carbondale thing made me a little queasy.
Comment by Soccermom Thursday, Aug 8, 13 @ 9:54 am
That’s a pretty darn good web video.
Comment by ScoutingSI Thursday, Aug 8, 13 @ 9:56 am
I wonder how much her campaign had to pay for the rights to the Mumford and Sons song? Pretty expensive video I’m guessing.
Comment by Rail Sitter Thursday, Aug 8, 13 @ 9:57 am
meh. but nice way to recover from the empty room reality. will there be a primary?
Comment by Amalia Thursday, Aug 8, 13 @ 10:00 am
Meh.
watchdog, hmm how about all that patronage Quinn has been engaged in while she looks out the window.
Comment by Todd Thursday, Aug 8, 13 @ 10:01 am
Well put together video, but her reading from a speech was a mistake. How hard is it to remember a few lines and look at the camera (i.e. your audience)?
Comment by The Muse Thursday, Aug 8, 13 @ 10:02 am
Was her dad somebody famous? /snark/
Paul would be ashamed of his daughter for using his skills, rather than her skills, to get elected. It is the exact opposite of what he stood for.
The kid is a disgrace.
Comment by Skeeter Thursday, Aug 8, 13 @ 10:02 am
A lot of cornfields and a hotel conference room.
Comment by wordslinger Thursday, Aug 8, 13 @ 10:03 am
I agree with The Muse, that reading was distracting. It also made it sound like she was just going through the motions without any passion for the job. And Jeezz…somebody needs to burn that yellow jacket…yuck!
Comment by Raising Kane Thursday, Aug 8, 13 @ 10:05 am
Kind of rough when you have to use subtitles because your candidate is mumbling through her cue cards. They had 3 shots at that byte and that was the best take available?
Comment by Rail Sitter Thursday, Aug 8, 13 @ 10:05 am
Not a bad video, but impossible not to hide the very small turnouts. That probably negates any positive message.
The Rauner video was pretty good, but completely destroyed by the annoying background music.
Comment by downstate hack Thursday, Aug 8, 13 @ 10:06 am
If driving “…from Chicago to Springfield and then home to a rally in Carbondale” “…was an amazing experience.”, then Ms. Simon needs a life.

I’ve seen elephants on rollerblades less awkward. More than most politicians with famous last names she’s really used her dad-who last won a race nearly a generation ago as a reason she should be taken seriously. I’ve been unimpressed. I thought her handling of the art turner thing a few years ago was incredibly condescending and she feels like she’s owed something because of what and who her dad was.
It’s nice that Rauner has traveled around the state, but I just think McKenna, his closest comparison (rich north shore gop’er/chicago insider guy trying to buy an office)-was a better candidate who worked harder, had more experience doing this kind of thing and still came up way short.
Comment by shore Thursday, Aug 8, 13 @ 10:23 am
No disrespect, but she lacks any kind of charm or charisma, folksy or otherwise, in this video.
She needs a bow tie, a dog or something.
Comment by Ghost Thursday, Aug 8, 13 @ 10:25 am
There is really only so much you can do in a case like this. Video is reasonably put together given the available content. The Yellow Jacket is a mortal sin. Do fines double when you hit someone wearing this jacket?
Comment by A guy... Thursday, Aug 8, 13 @ 10:25 am
Fiscal watchdog? Why doesn’t she start now? 99% of the waste, fraud, and abuse comes from agencies that she is 2nd in command of now?
Comment by Mouthy Thursday, Aug 8, 13 @ 10:28 am
More Cowbell… er… Banjo!
Comment by Cincinnatus Thursday, Aug 8, 13 @ 10:31 am
the video is good. the candidate not so good. need more substance in the message and the “elect me, I am my father’s daughter” is a non starter, period.
Comment by Susiejones Thursday, Aug 8, 13 @ 10:31 am
Mouthy — you might want to check your Illinois Constitution before you say stuff like “agencies that she is 2nd in command of.” Um, not so much.
Comment by Soccermom Thursday, Aug 8, 13 @ 10:32 am
Shore — please post a link to those elephant videos.

==More than most politicians==
See, there’s Sheila’s problem laid out right there. She is just NOT a politician. She has neither the heart, the charm, the speaking ability, or the charisma necessary for a politician.
Comment by Responsa Thursday, Aug 8, 13 @ 10:34 am
Dear Lt Gov Simon: You not running for Gov in Chicago?
PS what are those big brown rolls in da fields?
Comment by I'm Strapped Thursday, Aug 8, 13 @ 10:38 am
From the video: “I will be the most fiscal watchdog this state has ever seen.” Any details to go along with that promise/threat, Sheila? Perhaps Rich or some other inquisitive journalist can nail that down for us.

=== I wonder how much her campaign had to pay for the rights to the Mumford and Sons song? Pretty expensive video I’m guessing. ===
Good point… maybe a staffer just “stole” the music.
=== Fiscal watchdog? Why doesn’t she start now? 99% of the waste, fraud, and abuse comes from agencies that she is 2nd in command of now? ===
I was thinking the same thing.
=== Paul would be ashamed of his daughter for using his skills, rather than her skills, to get elected. It is the exact opposite of what he stood for. The kid is a disgrace. ===
A disgrace is a bit strong. I agree she is riding her father’s legacy, but she’s not a disgrace.
Comment by Just Observing Thursday, Aug 8, 13 @ 11:01 am
Is that Sheila’s band playing in Rauner’s video?
Comment by Soccermom Thursday, Aug 8, 13 @ 11:03 am
If some of you folks thing making mention and being proud of your parents is a “disgrace” then you have been in this game either too long or not long enough. The yellow coat? We are all talking about it. Keep wearing it.
Comment by Rolo Tomassi II Thursday, Aug 8, 13 @ 11:28 am
Oh, I second that…please keep wearing it!
Comment by Raising Kane Thursday, Aug 8, 13 @ 11:29 am
Rolo, you would define that as “mentioning”?
I would define it as “prime reason for her campaign.” She put it up front.
“Elect me because of my father.”
Of course, her father stood up against exactly that sort of thing.
So yes, she is a disgrace.
Comment by Skeeter Thursday, Aug 8, 13 @ 11:30 am
“maybe a staffer just “stole” the music.”
Certainly the wouldn’t have “stolen” copyrighted materiel to highlight their accountability? Surely a very large disclosure will be made very soon.

Catch 22, it’s not quite that good.

As for the coat, my guess is it’s fireproof too.
Comment by A guy... Thursday, Aug 8, 13 @ 11:52 am
Rating: It’s not as bad as a DIY commercial made at a cable system’s public access studio, but it’s still short on professional quality. Sheila’s voice is too low and overwhelmed by the music. The cinematography has some good shots but many many bad ones (i.e. she keeps looking down at the lectern. And the visual effects are weak.
Comment by Brendan Thursday, Aug 8, 13 @ 12:18 pm
Give her a bow tie, pool cue and a red bandana and she’ll just rock the Casbah!
Comment by dupage dan Thursday, Aug 8, 13 @ 1:10 pm
The jacket is okay and I am also okay with her referring to her father. She does need to memorize her lines and make direct eye contact. This allowed her to seem not ready for prime time.
Overall the video gets a B grade.
Comment by Endangered Moderate Species Thursday, Aug 8, 13 @ 1:45 pm
They even managed to make the event OneMan attended look semi-respectable with that editing!
As for her message, she’s going to have to come up with a new schtick. Every time she mentions her father, I cannot help but think: “Yeah. Because Paul Simon would have bailed on his running mate when the chips were down. And he totally would have kicked off his campaign with a completely bogus, blatantly false attack on his opponent rather than running a positive campaign.”
If you say so, Sheila.

This video would not even suffice in a Carbondale mayoral race. She’s toast in the primary.
