* How did Barton Lorimor do while I was away?
…Adding… Please, make sure to consider the constraints he was under. He couldn’t blog from work, which limited the time he could spend on the site. I originally asked him to just do one post a day to keep y’all occupied, but he clearly went above and beyond.

Rich, you’re one of a kind and irrreplcaeable, but he did fine in his own way.

Were you gone? LOL

Overall fine, however the site was lacking in cute pictures of Oscar….
Comment by OneMan Wednesday, Sep 11, 13 @ 11:23 am
Smart and funny. Give him a stockpile of Oscar pictures to post, and you can take a vacation more often.
Comment by Yossarian Lives Wednesday, Sep 11, 13 @ 11:23 am
There wasn’t really any news while you were gone, so, I mean, it wasn’t that tough of a job.
Comment by Empty Chair Wednesday, Sep 11, 13 @ 11:24 am
He did awesome. Loved to see “Shorts” back.
Also, hat’s off to Barton for being scrupulous in blogging on his own time — obviously getting up way early to do so.
Admirable integrity.

Barton did great while you were away. I’m just sorry that I didn’t participate in the discussions while he was moderating the blog.
Comment by Levois Wednesday, Sep 11, 13 @ 11:30 am
Barton was great!
There was a bit of humor to start the day, Barton got the posts out there that made discussion, and Barton “made it his own”, but never wavered from what this place is like when you are here.
This is a Compliment…
Barton was your “Joan Rivers”, from back in the ‘Day’, to YOUR Johnny Carson.
“The Tonight Show” was Johnny, but when Joan hosted when she was the permanent fill-in, and this is going to age me and a few of us, Joan kept it all going, left her “mark”, and made sure Johnny’s “Show” fell off the high marl Johnny had.

Sorry …
“and made sure Johnny’s “Show” NEVER fell off the high mark Johnny had.”
Better.
Barton, it’s a compliment, honest!

Thanks for adding that Barton couldn’t post from work. He did fine, but I really like the way you feed us bit by bit throughout the day. Because of the constraints he was under, he had to post several pieces at once, first thing in the morning. By noon, I was jonesing for more.
But I loved the return of Morning Shorts. Thanks Barton for keeping this place going while the boss was away. I can’t imagine what I would have done if this site was dark for ten days.

Very well done, given the time constraints. I hereby nominate him for the John Oliver award for best summer replacement.
Comment by olddog Wednesday, Sep 11, 13 @ 11:38 am
He proved he was a very competent individual. It has to be nice for you to be able to have a friend like him that you “can leave the keys to the store to” while you go off on vacation. Treat him well and let him know how much you sincerely appreciate him.

He did yeoman’s work. Well done.

He was great but it was a bit strange when he bagan calling around asking how much we liked Cap. Fax and if we thought it was worth the money for him to subscribe.
Comment by Give Me A Break Wednesday, Sep 11, 13 @ 11:45 am
I was hoping that Black Bart would “scoop” you and the others and let us know who Bill Brady and Pat Quinn were planning to have for their future running mates as Lt. Governor. That would have been great investigative reporting while you were gone. Then we could affectionately and respectfully call him “Scoop” Lorimor.

Rich, Be careful don’t take too much time off or your readers may demand a recall in favor of Barton.
Comment by downstate hack Wednesday, Sep 11, 13 @ 11:59 am
Certainly starts his day earlier than Rich…….

You were gone? No wonder I thought the site was performing better over the last week.

He was good enough that I’d be worried if he wasn’t such a close disciple. Wally Pipp, Lou Gehrig good.

Great job Barton! I liked your posts and you had some great analysis too. Nice work.
Comment by Kevin Fanning Wednesday, Sep 11, 13 @ 1:02 pm
His daily dispatches on your absence were great!
Also enjoyed the return of the Shorts.
Great job.

He was great, used the same font and everything.
Comment by siriusly Wednesday, Sep 11, 13 @ 1:06 pm
he did a good job. and I know exactly what Oswego Willy meant when he said Bart was your Joan Rivers! yes, a great replacement, Rich, but good to have you back!
Comment by Susiejones Wednesday, Sep 11, 13 @ 1:17 pm
- Susiejones -,
I am sure you were a toddler, barely walking when Joan would sit in for Johnny and Tommy Newsome sitting in for Doc!
I also give Barton “5 Cannoli”, out of 5, in the cannoli scale.
Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Sep 11, 13 @ 1:24 pm
Imagine if the Bears had a backup QB that compares as well to the main guy as Barton does to Rich!

If you ever need to expand to a 2-person operation, you don’t have to look very far…Since I sometimes am not able to be around the computer all day,I too, liked the morning shorts…

The morning shorts was great to have back.

Doesn’t have that veteran scowl/laugh/smirk in his writing, and most importantly no Oscar. He did a good job.
Comment by MarkT Wednesday, Sep 11, 13 @ 2:39 pm
===and most importantly no Oscar===
That’s a good way to get banned for life, dude.
Comment by Rich Miller Wednesday, Sep 11, 13 @ 2:42 pm
Did he have to walk/pet/feed OSCAR too?
Then a huge cash bonus should be paid pronto
Comment by CircularFiringSquad Wednesday, Sep 11, 13 @ 3:27 pm
Rich, You have a certain inimitable swagger that was missing in Barton. But he had his own unique style that was very good for the blog. I enjoyed it equally well but did not have the usual quota of either winces or giggles–a more contemplative enjoyment.
Comment by jake Wednesday, Sep 11, 13 @ 3:29 pm
I give Barton an A for effort. He kept the blog active and interesting. Thank you!
Comment by cicero Wednesday, Sep 11, 13 @ 4:28 pm

Thank you all for your comments, emails, Tweets, and texts you sent me with tips and suggestions. I’m relieved Rich is back like everyone else here, but thanks to him for giving me the opportunity and my bosses - including Mrs. Lorimor - that were cool with me taking this on.
Be well. Be safe. I look forward to seeing you all in the beer garden next month.
