Republican candidate for governor Bruce Rauner announced today that his campaign raised more than $1 million from over 1,300 donations in the third fundraising quarter.
“I am excited by the growing support for our efforts to shake up Springfield,” said Bruce Rauner. “Illinoisans understand that the career politicians have failed, and we need a fresh perspective to turn things around.”
No word on his current cash on hand.
* Meanwhile, Dan Rutherford’s tweet doesn’t say how much he actually raised in the quarter…

Rutherford ended the last quarter with $1,020,373.25 cash on hand, so he’s up only a net of $200K.

It’ll be interesting to see how much of Rauner’s $1,000,000 was from Rauner himself. I actually suspect it’ll be impressive how much he has raised without tapping his own pocketbook.

Two points;

Wonder how many of those 1300 donors are from Illinois, when it’s all said and done.
Second,
The “Burn Rate” of Rauner. Raising a million, spending a million, high burn rate.
Further,
You have to believe Rauner is going to need “paid volunteers” to get some, if not most, if not … all… his petitions out and signed. Not a “big” expense, a drop in the bucket with a fiscal quater raising a million dollars, but, something to keep an eye on with monies being raised, touted, and measured.

If that’s the case, Illinoisans won’t vote for someone who’s dropped millions on career politicians over the years.

Those numbers are terrible for Rutherford.
There are a lot of people, myself included, who are on the sidelines with checkbook in hand until we can figure out who is going to be a serious candidate.
$200K isn’t going to make me grab a pen.

If you read the tweet, Rutherford makes a point saying “no debt” and “bills paid”.
To that, if the D-2 shows major payments for infastructure, signage, etc., and after ALL that is paid, and ready to go, whatever that numbe is added to make the GROSS, that could be an impressive number, we just don’t know yet.
The tweet is out there to make us think, until the filing;
What are the “bills paid”, and with “no debt”, what is Rutherford saying to Brady, saying to Dillard … even saying to Rauner, as we all question Rauner’s burn rate, and rate of return on that burning?
Is Rauner’s bur rate still moving numbers, if, for example, Rauner’s Crew is spending $500K, raising $1 million and still staying or plateaued at a percent.
More to the numbers, which is why the D-2 filings are fun to begin with the money raised, and go from there.

Doing the most basic math of $1 million and 1,300 donors gives an average of almost $770 a check. Very basic analysis, but based on that it doesn’t appear the grassroots run very deep.

Agreed that this is partly a shot at Dillard, but also Rutherford didn’t have any debt last quarter.

Rauner is raising at a good rate. But not nearly enough to spend what he wants and not blow through the cap. Once that cap is blown, Quinn will be in a really, really enviable position to spending millions of SEIU and trade union money defining the Republican nominee right after the primary.

Yeah and look at his A-1 filings on the Board of Elections website. The $1 million is almost all large dollar contributions from other 1%’ers. Rauner wants to give impression he’s got wide grassroots support, but it’s all a sham.
This guy can’t even be honest about the simple stuff. Rauner can spend as much as he wants, but he’ll never bamboozle a plurality of primary voters. This is a politician who can’t even convince his wife to go GOP.

Rutherford does run a very efficient operation but I do wonder, like others have mentioned, what was the gross amount -or what was Rauner’s net amount?

I have a dumb question. With Rauner’s unlimited supply of cash, why does he care if he breaks the personal contribution cap? It isn’t like that would automatically mean Dillard, Rutherford, and Brady could start dumping in tons of cash. They obviously don’t have it personally or in their campaign. Why not spend enough to just blow them away?

They could bust the cap with a loan, raise big bucks from some of their funders, pay back the loans and raise more big bucks.
Plus, it keeps Quinn from doing the same.

Pat has from that day Rauner breaks the cap till March to raise unlimited, with no where or no one to spend that cash on.
Remember, $2 is needed for every $1 when you have a Primary and you’re opponent, if you win the Primary, does not.

For years my father voted Republican and my mother Democrat. They used to laugh about how they cancelled each others vote. I don’t get the big deal with Rauner and his wife.

I get your point that conceivably they could raise tons of cash and then spend it. The Pat Quinn point is probably the better one. In the case of the Primary though, if those guys are capable of getting loans or raising huge amounts from contributors, why the heck aren’t they doing it now? I submit it is because they aren’t capable. Most of the reason for that I assume is because folks like Gidwitz are all in for Rauner.

How many of those failed “career politicians” are wholly owned subsidiaries of Rauner, Inc. and his pals?
How many of them did Rauner, Inc. invest in, and what does that say about hopes that Rauner, Inc. can fix Illinois pensions as he claims?
More to the point: its going on five days and I dont think I have heard a peep from Rauner, Inc. about the mayor’s proposal to delay hundreds of millions in pension payments.
Is Rahm Emanuel a “failed career politician”?
What’s the matter Rauner, cat got your tongue?

“Do you want to go up against Rauner’s basic bottomless pocekts of money, versus trying to beat Rauner in the ‘controlled money arena’ keeping cash on the sidelines that Rauner won’t touch.”

If I remember right, he is about $1,000 below triggering the cap. His PAC is the avenue through which his personal fortune will flow unimpeded into the race. You can open a lot of offices and hire a lot of staff on the PAC side without busting the cap on the governor’s race.
Rauner is a lot of things, but he isn’t stupid.

Has anyone seen numbers since Rich did his poll? I tend to think if Rauner was up big we would know it since he has to be polling Even if he moved into first place that would be something to release if only to demoralize the Brady people. Like they say in sports the longer they stay close the more they believe they can win.

Rutherford had a fundraiser at a pretty fancy north shore home on sunday afternoon, the kind of place with a gate and driveway that’s long enough for a robbie gould kickoff. There were 3 cars and 2 security guys.

Some interesting things in Rauner’s A-1s.
– Jeff Immelt, chairman of GE, and his wife both maxed out.
– Loads of big contributions from attorneys at Kirkland & Ellis.
– Richard Dennis, the legendary CBOT trader, maxed out. He’s been a huge Dem funder in the past and is a national proponent of drug legalization/decriminalization.

Other interesting donors to Rauner:
=John Fisher (Gap heir and owner of the Oakland A’s) and his wife
=Thomas Tull (CEO of Legendary Pictures, which produced the most recent Batman trilogy and Hangover movies, among other things) who has only donated to Democrats at the federal level as far as I can tell and donated to the DCCC only a couple of month ago. Wonder if Ari Emanuel will help out Rahm’s friend in raising money in Hollywood?

Boy, he’s REALLY raking it in. At this rate, Quinn doesn’t stand a CHANCE of keeping up in fundraising if Rauner wins the GOP Nomination…and those TV commercials can eat an opponent alive (when you have 2 or 3 of them to the other sad sack’s one…)!!! Quinn had better start WORRYing, let alone the Treasurer and the other GOP candidates who’ll be falling WAY behind the “rich Rauner” at this rate…!

This isn’t a legislative race where more money usually wins. The real question is if the other 3 will raise enough money to let people know about his D vote and donations.
