* Bruce Rauner’s running mate Evelyn Sanguinetti was asked in Quincy this week what made her qualified to be governor in case something happens to Rauner. Her response wasn’t covered locally, but here it is in full…
“First of all, I served at the Illinois Attorney General’s office advising many units of government. I later went into private practice doing a lot of the same, so my relationships with government and knowing the way government works has been sound throughout the years.
“Not only am I an attorney that has advised government, I am also an adjunct professor of law at the John Marshall Law School. And I can send my message to all laws. [NOTE: I heard “all laws” but some heard “all walks” or “all walks of life.”]
“When I became an adjunct professor, I also took on the role of running and winning and becoming a councilman in the city of Wheaton. Right now I am a councilman to 54,000 residents and I’ve enjoyed my job doing that.
“All of this makes me absolutely qualified. But more so than anything I am a mother and I am a working woman who is very concerned about a state that I love very much.
“And because of that I am fully qualified and ready to serve, now and over the next couple of years. Thank you.

Bruce Rauner’s credentials campaigning for governor as an outsider were bolstered Wednesday as he introduced his running mate: a first-term Wheaton City Council member who has never held higher office than that.
Evelyn Sanguinetti talked up her work, her family history - daughter of immigrants from Ecuador and Cuba who worked hard to give their progeny a better life - and her conservative credentials as the two stopped at Haddad’s Downtown restaurant on the second day of a statewide campaign swing.
“I’m sure a (4-foot, 11-inch) Latina with an Italian last name is not what the career politicians had expected,” she said. “… I’m not part of a Springfield club, I’m not an insider.”
Sanguinetti repeatedly cast the campaign as a battle between outsiders and insiders, and praised Rauner’s work over the years with education issues, including school reform, and said that dedication linked the two of them.

Describing her as someone with drive to overcome obstacles, Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner’s introduced Evelyn Sanguinetti as his running mate for lieutenant governor during a campaign stop Wednesday at Vault Café On The Square.
“Evelyn has been living the American dream that can inspire us,” Rauner said in his introduction of Sanguinetti, the daughter of a father who legally immigrated to the United States from Ecuador and her mother, who entered the country as a Cuban refugee.
Rauner, who is seeking the Republican nomination, said Sanguinetti’s strong points include a desire to turn around elementary school education in Illinois and create a booming economy throughout the state.
Playing off his campaign motto, Rauner said Sanguinetti joins him on a campaign mission to “shake it (Springfield) up like it never has been shaken up before.”

“I show respect to very socially conservative voters, I show the respect to socially liberal voters and moderate centrist voters. I want to bring them all together and unite the party and I want to appeal to many Democrats who are frustrated with the lack of jobs and high taxes and the deteriorating schools and corruption in Springfield. Pat Quinn is failing because he’s not a leader,” Rauner said.

Working moms are great people. Heck, I had a working mom — but mom wasn’t silly enough to claim that qualified her to be governor.

If all Evelyn has to offer is being a Lawyer, who may/may not have seen corruption and didn’t report it, and a working Mom, that is pretty embarrassing considering the job is running the 5th largest state in America.
According to Evelyn, Billion dollars in a budget an Agencies few have heard of can be run by Marge Simpson?
Maybe being under 5 feet tall makes it all work out.

That “I’m a mom and I care so I’m qualified” thing annoys the heck out of me.
I can’t figure out how churning out a kid makes her suddenly qualified to be governor.
It is one thing to say “I understand the needs of people raising children in this state.” That’s one thing. But to go farther and say that’s her primary qualification? If that’s the best she can do, then she has no business on the ticket.

Wow. This is a lightweight of lightweights. She has that deer-in-the-headlights look that Quayle displayed. She will be mowed-over in Springfield even if she is just lite gov. The other candidates have at least named people who seem pretty articulate and unflappable. Rauner’s choice tells me that the GA did not get it right. We need to allow the nominated candidates to pick someone after the primary.

I agree with everything the first 17 posters have said. Some of her statements seem like they are pretty incoherent, so I think she’s a good match for Rauner because he uses language the same way.
I am getting pretty tired of the vague “Quinn is not a leader” or that he is lacking in the area of “leadership.” It’s SO easy to say, but the people who say it almost never specify exactly what they mean. It’s easy, cheap criticism when one doesn’t explain precisely why they’re saying it. What is, or isn’t he doing, and just exactly how should he be doing those things differently?

Professor of law? Sanguinetti & Simon.
Understands demands of raising a family in Illinois? Sanguinetti & Simon.
City Council experience? Sanguinetti & Simon.
Experience in private practice? Sanguinetti: Yes. Simon: Limited or none, if memory serves.
Last name? Sanguinetti: Mostly neutral. Possibly a hindrance in the eyes of some xenophobic fools. Simon: Certainly helpful as the daughter of Paul.
Family ties to Illinois politics? Sanguinetti: None, daughter of immigrants. Simon: Many, daughter of a popular and widely beloved politician.
Check that. Sanguinetti compares more than favorably.

There are several thousand village trustees and aldermen across the state. Are all of them qualified to be governor too? Or only those who are also moms and lawyers?
How much experience has she had with the political process? Minimal. How skillful is she in navigating that process to get things done? She hasn’t held office long enough to have a good track record.

From Sheila Simon’s website, her qualifications:
She is a lawyer, teacher and mother of two college-age daughters.
In comparison to that stellar resume, how dare Sanguinetti hold herself out as qualified to be whatever the Lt. Governor is. Of course, her real qualification was her family tree.

The fact that she has served nearly three years as Lieutenant Governor advocating for issues, leading various councils, working with the GA, etc.

Yes, and the answer was that she wasn’t. Unless you have done it before, being Governor or President (or Lieutenant Governor or VP) is not something you can have prior experience for. You basically have to hope people have managed big bureaucracies before and understand how government budgeting works and then take a leap that they can do that on a grander scale with more legislators wanting a piece of the pie.

We’ll be getting to that. I’ve written about this topic before, but not yet on this particular pairing. Polling I took showed Republican voters overwhelmingly favored candidates choosing a running mate who was more conservative than the candidates.

1. Mike Madigan “negotiates” with people like Rauner all the time. He is Speaker. And if you think it is a “negotiation” you are already lost. But thanks for confirming Durkin’s remaining in the minority.
2. Regarding Rauner’s choice of running mates, the invariable problem with candidates who claimed to have pulled themselves up by their bootstraps is that they didnt. Almost always, we find that self-made millionaires made thier fortune off government contracts or government help, and those who rose out of poverty received government asistance.
That’s not a problem when you are running as a Democrat arguing for the legitimate role of government and the social safety net, but it is a problem when you are an anti-government Republican.

In a state that has a chronic budget deficit brought about by huge pension liabilities, it would seem like the insiders have been adept at creating the problem, but inept at finding a solution. This albatross of a problem didn’t manifest itself overnight. It has been accruing over many years while we continue to elect career politicians. Initially I’m going to keep an open mind…certainly she would qualify as someone who is intellectually capable and frankly she’s as qualified as any of the other announced Lt Governor candidates.
I would agree that Rauner & Sanginetti are sorely lacking in experience as candidates, but I wouldn’t bet against him as a leader should he & his running mate get elected. His alliances with the Mayor and with big business, and his disdain for public unions would definitely change the political dynamics in Illinois.

How can you tout your tenure in the attorney general’s office, your role as a legal advisor to municipal governments and your work as an elected office and call yourself an outsider?
Outside of what? Were local governments seeking her advice because she was clueless?
Wasn’t she on the inside when she witnessed all that corruption and those insider deals?
Farmer Bruce, of course, has a more ludicrous Mr. Outside story, but ultimately, what’s the point? You can’t sell it.

I can’t stand Rauner and am not overly impressed with Sanguinettis comments thus far, but still feel like the criticism of her as a possible lite gov based on her background feels over the top. As others have noted her background sort of correlates to Simons, albeit Sheila had two pols for parents and went to better schools.
The more Rauners opponents make his running mate the story rather than him the better for Rauner.

Simon was asked about her qualifications during a candidates’ debate with Baxter Swilly…
Simon touted her experience on the Carbondale City Council, her law career, and her motherhood as qualifications. “Most significantly, I think that teaching ability is something that will be very useful,” Simon said.

He’s not my preferred candidate going into the primaries but I just think that Rauner and Sanguinetti should run and pass or fail on their appeal to voters. IMO there is an inside baseball mean spiritedness toward this candidacy that goes well beyond partisanship and I don’t think it’s healthy. I mean, neither of these people are remotely Scott Lee Cohen.

Responsa, Rauner is the ultimate insider. He’s dropped millions on politicians from both parties. He wheeled-and-dealed to get government business. He employed clout to make the government work for him. He vacations with his buddy Emanuel.
His ridiculous claims to be an “outsider” are an insult to the intelligence of all voters. I think that explains some of the antipathy. It certainly explains mine.

Have to agree with Responsa re unusual hatred for Rauner.
Brady lost an extremely winnable election because he was too far to the right on social issues, and he responds by going even further to the right.
D-Lard sees that Brady lost by going far right, so D-Lard responds by going far right. In doing so, he seemingly reverses just about every position that once made him the choice of moderates.
Yet those two barely get a mention.
Instead, we every election thread is thrilled with hatred for Rauner.
The volume of posts, by the same people, really have become tiresome. Reading the exact same post, by the exact same two or three people, on the subject is overkill.
This blog was always known for the great comments. Now, I find myself having to wade through so many tedious posts saying the exact same thing to get to the few that are interesting. I may as well read the comments on the Tribune’s site.
Ok people. We get it. You don’t like Rauner. You’ve told us. Now move on.

The “she’s not qualified to step in and be Governor” argument is a paper tiger. Look what the last THREE Governors actually did while in office. A chipmunk from my back yard would have done less harm.

I think a better – and more on-message – response would have been something along the lines of: “11 years ago we elected a Lt. Governor who had a long resume full of ‘qualifications,’ and when he had to step in to the Governor’s chair….do I really need to remind any one how that has been working out? We don’t need another Springfield politician who has checked the right boxes on the proverbial application - we need someone with a vision, and the guts to fight for it. I share Bruce’s vision for a better Illinois, I certainly have the guts to fight for it as either a partner or a successor.”

Yeah. I have a ton of respect for Rich. By a wide margin this is the best source for Springfield news. It is the only news source that I check more than once per day. It is, quite simply, required reading.
But I wish he would start monitoring things a bit more so that comment threads are not filled with certain people simply repeating the same thing over and over.
Oswego, when you are not repeating the same tired lines about Rauner, your posts can be interesting. But too often they simply cover the same ground in the same way. Now, rather than making a point, the volume of posts simply serves to alienate some people. I can tell you that on certain days, I’m ready to write a check to Rauner just out of spite for the volume of posts against him.

HisGirlFriday: You set the bar pretty low by apparently comparing her favorably to Cohen and Plummer. Those two would have been mowed-over as well had they gotten to a position of authority. We need to allow the successful Gov nominees to pick their LG nominees after the primary so that credible and accomplished people will say yes. This deer-in-the-headlights, amateur-goofball, “absolutely qualified” by modest achievements approach to designating our #2 is fundamentally flawed. There is not much reason for pinnacle-level people to ever run for LG in the primary under the current system, and she provides a good illustration.

I am more concerned with the capability of this person to quickly learn, adapt and develop than her prior experience running government.
Is experience important? Certainly. Especially when dealing with an executive position.
But there have been plenty of great leaders without tons of prior government experience.
Hopefully the Lite Guv won’t have to take over the job. But chances are she would have at least a few months to settle in and learn the ropes in Springfield before taking over. My question is, can she demonstrate an ability to quickly develop and grow? We should get some answers under the bright lights of the campaign trail.
The same thing applies to Sheila Simon. Even though she clearly lacked experience and seemed unimpressive for such a job, I kept hoping I was wrong. I kept hoping that she would truly grow during her time in Springfield. Unfortunately, she did not. And most of us could have predicted that based upon her performance and limited progress during the campaign.
Yet for every Simon, there is a Lisa Madigan. Someone who doesn’t have a great deal of experience but steps in, grows into the role and does a better than expected job. Madigan may not do a good enough job in many areas for my liking, but she’s clearly not serving there just because it’s a nice title that pays well. She cares about the job and cares about doing a good job.
I am not willing to write off Sanguinetti just yet. Let’s see how she shapes up on the campaign trail.

No Norseman, I really don’t. I don’ have much use for Rauner. I don’t care if people make comments that are negative or positive regarding him.
It is not about the political perspective of the posts. It is about whether, in large volume, they remain interesting.
When every thread includes countless posts by the same two or three people saying the same thing in the same way, it is not interesting.

That quote does not make her any more qualified than before Evelyn said it. There are no magic properties and “poof” that quote changes everything.

@DuPage Rep: Saying she believes she can spread a valuable message among “all walks” or “all walks of life” is certainly a much different statement than “all laws”.

Welcome to the internet! Must not have experienced the internet pre-web — the wild west usenet days in the early 90s– when pretty much the exact same thing happened — with folks trying to “control” it via verbal gymnastics or metacommentary or threats to “contact an admin”. (Me, I stuck to alt.music.dylan — but that’s another story.) Still, my point: it’s part of the game. If you don’t like it, don’t read it — or start your own rhetorical meme and jackhammer it home until it achieves whatever imaginary impact you hope it might achieve.
In this case — in Rauner’s case — he’s essentially asking for the rhetorical jackhammer by pretending like he knows something about a world he seems to know little about — and goes out of his way to threaten the people — Madigan, state employees — that he’s going to need to get any policy implemented and carried out. I never understand the assaults against the establishment when it’s the establishment that provides the means to achieve whatever agenda you’re hoping to achieve.
A little tact and empathy and compromise go a long way toward getting important things achieved for all sides. It’s a lesson that much of the GOP seems not to have learned.
I mean, it’s not rocket science, right?

Seriously? Will this guy ever tell the truth?
Then again, most of Rauner’s negotiations are pay to play activities so maybe he actually thinks he’s negotiating.
BTW - Rauner tried negotiating a terrible bill when he helped fund the “The Stand for Illinois Children” group. Rauner through various funding mechanisms helped Madigan with 4 House races. Madigan won those races - Rauner’s bill was never passed in the form he wanted.
That ladies and gentlemen will be the regular scenario if this guy gets to the promised land.
Bruce - this is not a board room filled with your lackey’s so unless you’re willing to continue to pay to play which has not gone well for some of our previous governors - you best start learning what a real governor needs to do to move the state forward.

General tone is that she’s not qualified. I agree. But something else people have been hinting at; isn’t she more qualified than Bruce? What makes him qualified? His money? Hus experience with government is: 1. make big donation to politician. 2. get state pension fund business.
What does he have that she doesn’t, except the money?

The story that needs more coverage is Sanguinetti’s acceptance of union bucks in her Wheaton campaign and her husband’s work as an attorney for unions suing businesses and non-profits. Other than the fact that Ms. Sanguinetti tossed out two phrases in Spanish I could see no appeal for the Hispanic vote. In particular I saw no appeal to small business people from the Hispanic community which could be the GOP’s most likely support base.
Let’s be clear about something, Chicago and suburban Hispanic business people have not been leaders in opposition to political corruption or insider political deals. They have been very much part of the process, isn’t this why Speaker Madigan has supported funding for UNO charter schools in Chicago, or other old time white Democrats have integrated Latino ward workers into their machines?
So if the GOP wants to break this alliance and Ms. Sanguinetti is part of some type of strategy to do that where was the play for those votes? I saw none and I saw no evidence of a strategy in that press conference.

Another way to look at this is to ask what the Lt. Gov. can do to help the state besides waiting around for the Chief Executive to collapse or go to prison. In that light, Kim starts to look a lot better.

Does it really matter? Rauner chose who he chose because that’s all that’s left. No House member, that remains will give up there seat for Bruce. All the Senators that would be good are up. Maybe he could find a County Board Chair, but most of them won’t give up the power position to be second fiddle. So I ask- what or who else is left?

Rauner’s insistence that career politicians - except apparently those he has financed - are to blame for all the state’s problems pretty much rule out all those folks.
Ironically, Rauner has declared that to navigate state government, he is gonna need to surround himself with a bunch of insiders. I hope someone else catches on.
Still you would have thought with all his money Rauner could have found a mayor of a downstate city to tag along for the ride. The executive credentials are more solid, name recognition better. Of course, mayors, like governors, have to actually work with public employee unions in order to be successful, so maybe they all disqualified themselves as well.

Hey, there are 62,496 Lawyers in Illinois now, (according to the ABA), so that’s not such a big deal, and a LOT of ‘em work in respectable Government Positions and are loving Parents, too, so that’s not such a big deal either. And although she was elected to one of Chicago’s suburb’s City Councils a couple years back, which helps, there are somewhere around 1300 cities, towns, and villages in Illinois, so, again, sorry, but that TOO is not really something that makes her someone so thoroughly well-experienced in Government so as to make folks COMfortable that she would be altogether prepared and ready to step in as the Chief Executive of, and administer, the 5th Most Populous State in the U.S., arguably at least, Most Powerful Country on Earth!!!
