* The Quincy Journal points out that Bruce Rauner and his new running mate differ substantially on some social issues…
Rauner said he wanted to put gay marriage on a referendum before the voters and said he supported a woman’s “ability to choose…I believe in some common sense regulations and restrictions so it’s rare and safe, but I support a woman’s ability to decide.”
Sanguinetti, however, differed with the top of the ticket.
“On the issue of life…I must say, my mother chose me and she had me at age15,” she said. “For this reason, I am pro-life. I also believe in marriage with the traditional defintion.”
Sanguinetti added that while she and Rauner “are apart on social issues”, they both recognize that Illinois is broken in many other ways.
* Some see those differences as a problem. I’m not sure why, at least not in the primary. Remember a poll I commissioned a while back?…
The Aug. 13 Capitol Fax/We Ask America poll surveyed 1,102 likely Republican primary voters.
The poll found that 74 percent of Republicans wanted GOP gubernatorial candidates to choose a running mate who was “more conservative” than the candidates themselves. Another 18 percent said ideology made no difference and a mere 7 percent said they wanted a more liberal running mate.
The poll found that 73 percent of Republican women and 75 percent of men wanted a more conservative running mate.
79 percent of seniors, who tend to dominate GOP primaries, wanted a more rightward pick.
77 percent of collar county Republicans, 73 percent of suburban Cook and downstate Republicans and 69 percent of Chicago Republicans wanted the candidates to look to their right when picking their lieutenant governor candidates.
Again, at least in the primary, this move could take some heat off Rauner.

I have never believed running mates have any positive effect. A very poor choice I think can have a negative effect, but I don’t think Conservatives will see Rauner as less than liberal because of Sanguinetti.

Sanguinetti is a breath of fresh air and helps Rauner considerably. The fact that people are jumping all over her the first day says a lot.

The louie choice might give Rauner some governor on abortion. But I imagine there will still be some noise about in the primary before it’s all done.
He needs to be pushed off his ridiculous referendum stance on gay marriage. All candidates should be asked straight up: if the current gay marriage bill passed, would you, as governor, sign it?
Can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.

Isn’t it the case that respondents saying that they would like for the LG pick to be more conservative does not necessarily mean that they would be OK with the gov nominee being a moderate? In other words, they might well prefer someone to the right for gov and even more to the right for LG. That seems to be Sen. Brady’s conclusion.

While I agree with Rauner on social issues, I’d see it more of a problem if Sanguinetti suddenly re-thought her positions on social issues to be in line with his views.

In the “olden days”, it used to be a benefit to “balance the ticket”.
Makes sense to me.
It is a positive notion that two people can get along, work together and lead a large entity in tandem. When making big decisions, both “sides” then have a voice behind closed doors. If the two people leading the ticket have a respectful and inclusive working relationship, that leads to better policy decisions for all.
Then again, we could just demand purity in our tickets and caucuses on both sides, Democrat and Republican. Bash each other to bits and to victor go the spoils.
Interesting to see who Quinn picks.

Here’s another Comment for you, Rich: it’s difficult for folks to scrounge up much to say about somebody they think is fake, don’t really much care for, and would prefer is not even in the race (especially on a “Feel Good Friday” afternoon!
But as I like to occasionally assert, “This is America”–so if he qualifies to get on the ballot for some Office, the guy always has a right to throw his name out there before the Public, and with the Voters, “Let the Chips fall where they may…!”
