@GovernorQuinn says he plans to pick a lieutenant governor running mate within the next month. Wants someone who has "ethic of service."

When Quinn was searching for replacement for Scott Lee Cohen in 2010, he said a Lt. Gov. should love dogs. He's standing by that.

* The governor is definitely a dog lover

She’s been dubbed the winner of NBC’s Chicago Fire Top Dog Competition, and now a Spot named Smokey has has been awarded her own day for her winning ways.

Only six months old when she found herself inside a home engulfed by flames, the Labrador/Retriever mix was saved thanks to the efforts of firefighters and a veterinarian, who kept her on oxygen, hand fed her, and provided loving care for three days following her ordeal.

Today four-year-old Smokey, a firehouse dog who is based out of Station 2 in Jacksonville, Illinois, helps those who gave her a helping hand by teaching safety techniques like “stop, drop and roll” to school children and the community.

In recognition of the kind-hearted canine’s contribution to her community,Pat Quinn, the Governor of Illinois, has proclaimed that October 11th will now be known as “Smokey the Dog Day” in the state.

Let’s hope Oscar the Puppy never has to endure such an ordeal.

* But every day at my house is Oscar the Puppy Day. He’s the center of pretty much all that he surveys.

Oscar really loves to chew and chew and chew. So far, he hasn’t chewed any of my furniture, which is a good thing. But give him a hard treat and he’ll chomp on it with a look of calm bliss. It really settles him down

He sounds just like his owner; doesn;t chew furniture, but chomps on hard treats. The only difference being that it doesn’t settle his owner down, it just whets his appetite for more. Hard news, hard treats, not much difference there.

  6. … “the Labrador/Retriever mix” …

A Labrador is a Retriever. Some reporter doesn’t know dogs al that well.

  7. Well, Laurper, enough with you.

Hope you had fun while it lasted.

  8. Yes, another pleasurable Friday afternoon break, this time in early Fall, for Oscar and the rest of us who enjoy his adventures, fun, peace, antics and this time, just plain enjoying some relaxAtion time “chompin’ at the bit,” which for Oscar is hardly talking, but rather pretty much chewing or gnawing at whatever is around and edible-looking apparently (though I suppose that Living Room Couch probably looks a bit too daunting for him to sink his teeth into)…!

Hope you enjoy another Oscar-Centric Weekend!!

  9. Avoid pig ears, too hard and sharp. Some swear by raw bones, but we buy chunky shank bones (2 in or more) simmer in water w some garlic and soy. They love em. Grt frozen. Wonderful pacifiers.

  10. Laurper doesn’t get it. You just don’t speak ill about a man and his dog; the most loyal, unselfish loving relationship on Planet Earth. The dude needed to be smited. Hope he learned something…but I doubt it.

  11. Maybe the Gov. needs a dog for VP? Rich, hide Oscar if Quinn inquires!

  12. VP = Lite Gov

Doubt that meets constitutional muster. LOL

  13. ===“ethic of service” = “will return my call” ===

I think it’s more likely that would have been true of Bill Daley, but it tends to be much less true of sitting governors. Even including Gov. Quinn.

  14. I love dogs and I have and ethic of state service having worked for the state for 33 years, but I’m pretty sure Quinny and I disagree on the importance of paying your bills.

Comment by PublicServant Friday, Oct 11, 13 @ 2:03 pm

  15. ===Rich, hide Oscar if Quinn inquires!===

I’m told the governor is considering getting a dog. His previous pooch pal passed over to that great dog park in the sky a couple years ago.

  16. You are shameless.
Coming from me, you can decide if that’s a compliment.

  17. ===I’m pretty sure Quinny and I disagree on the importance of paying your bills. ===

While Quinn has been governor we haven’t missed or short-changed a single pension payment. Just how far back do you think you have to go to find another governor who can say that? John Peter Altgelt? Henry Horner? Maybe I’m being a little too cynical, but probably only just a little.

And as far as I know the primary reason we have a backlog on paying our bills is because the Republicans in the GA refuse to go along with us borrowing money to pay the bills. They seem to think it’s fairer to have our vendors do the borrowing when we fail to pay. Quinn disagrees.

    Comment by Mighty M. Mouse Friday, Oct 11, 13 @ 3:20 pm

  18. Altgeld, not Altgelt. My mistake.

    Comment by Mighty M. Mouse Friday, Oct 11, 13 @ 3:21 pm

  19. Ethic of service should disqualify anyone who was Blago’s running mate. That would be opportunism and lack of principles.

Comment by Downstate Illinois Friday, Oct 11, 13 @ 3:37 pm

  20. What is the difference between a cat and a dog?

Answer: The cat sees that we cater to it’s every need and thinks, “I must be a god” The dog sees that we cater to it’s every need and thinks, “He must be a god”.

Frankly, I wish I was half as good as my dog thinks I am.
