This just in… Steele to complete John Stroger’s term

Posted in:

On the first ballot, even.

Cook County commissioners on their first ballot this morning chose Bobbie Steele as the interim board president. All 11 democratic commissioners voted for Steele while the five Republicans voted for Carl Hansen.

Commissioner Forrest Claypool, who lost the Democratic primary for the Cook County Board nomination, was also nominated for the interim post, but when it became clear that Steele had the votes, Claypool switched to back Steele and Mike Quigley also voted for Steele.

Immediately after the vote, the Republicans changed their votes to make it unanimous for Steele.

  4. Note that the decisive vote to complete this deal was that of the gaming and tobacco lobbyist (not to mention his lobbying work for the Chicago Bar Association), that phony reformer, Commissioner Larry Sufferdin.

Comment by Randall Sherman, Secretary/Treasurer, Illinois Committee for Honest Government Wednesday, Jul 19, 06 @ 3:13 pm

  5. I wonder why the Republicans did not force the choice of their Democrat.

Comment by Cal Skinner Wednesday, Jul 19, 06 @ 4:03 pm

  6. It’s called “the hustle” …to the left, to the right, the westside got Steele and the southside got Toddler. right foot now, and turn, cross.

  7. Mr. Sherman:

For a Cook County Employee, you sure do spend a lot of time posting messages during work hours. Even if you are on break, I am sure you are using government equipment.

Drop the key board, step a way from the computer, and get back to work.

  8. The decisive vote did not belong to Sufferdin, but to Earlean Collins. http://www.dailyherald.com/story.asp?id=209272

  9. Get Back to Work, I couldn’t help but notice that your griping didn’t include any claim that Sherman’s facts were false.

  10. Randall,

I often find your posts entertaining and, while I usually disagree, I marvel at your dedication and consistency. Plus, we all know that lobbyists are the absolute worst people ever and there is no redeeming value to any of their work. I don’t want to be too off-topic, but next time you whip out the hatchet remember that the “phony reformer” spells his name s-u-f-f-R-E-d-i-n. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, nobody is entitled to their own facts — or spelling. Much appreciated.

Comment by Tom Suffredin Wednesday, Jul 19, 06 @ 5:05 pm

  11. Lobbyists in general? No … there are worthwhile causes which use lobbyists? Lobbyists for merchants of death and financial ruin? Kind of shows an individual that will do anything for money, regardless of its immorality. A “reformer” who was the first and “point” man to push Bobbie “Stroger in Drag” Steele for Interim President and to replace Stroger I on the balloot? Makes me wonder what kind of deal the “reformer” had worked out with the machine hack.

  12. Question: Did Beavers participate, or has he not been sworn in yet?

  13. What are Bobbie Steele’s credentials? She seems nice?

Comment by Roy Wednesday, Jul 19, 06 @ 6:01 pm

  14. I guess either my sarcasm didn’t come across so well or you chose not to pick up on it so you’d have a jumping off point. You need to relax, brother. Come hang out with me, we’ll smoke some cigarettes and head to the boats to play a little blackjack. Then we can see Merchants of Death and Financial Ruin play a double bill at the Aragon. Good times, man. Great use of “quotes”, though.

  15. forget it. I am voting for Peraica, notwithstanding his conservative stands. He won’t be able to do a thing on those issues without a majority on the board, and even if he did there is not that much at the county level pertaining to the great social issues of the day.

besides, my fellow Dems should realize that he would be a one termer and we may as well let Peraica be at the helm when tough budget decisions are being made.

Comment by Minion Wednesday, Jul 19, 06 @ 6:28 pm

  16. I guess the beleagured if politically naive citizens of Cook County, especially its suburban citizens, have to wonder what Daley and Beavers have planned for Ms. Steele to accomplish during her short tenure. After all, if they handle things right, she can take care of some unplesant tasks such as fixing the budget by raising our taxes again….allowing the Toddler to walk into a much easier job, at least for a while. And the easier the Toddler’s job is in 07, the easier it is for Da Mare to get re-elected. A big mess over at the County would be just one more hassle he would rather not have.

  17. Wow…Bobbie gets the Board President’s pension for serving four months instead of four years. Nice work if you can get it.

Comment by Prez of the FTPC Wednesday, Jul 19, 06 @ 7:11 pm

  18. The news reported she would double her pension if she retired in December. That is going to be a difficult situation for her since she is 68. My guess is that she will bail. I don’t know if she wants to go until 72.

  19. Say what you want but at least we don’t get Coruthers as Congressman in the 7th. Whew! On a related note, why do you supposed these all these Aldermen all want to bail out of the city council?

    Coruthers - Congress
    the Toddler- County Board
    Beevis- County Board
    Burnett- Congresss
Smith- wherever they will have him

  20. wow Forest Perica and hansen lose again

Comment by Topinka Treats Wednesday, Jul 19, 06 @ 11:12 pm

  21. “Pres” — It was all part of the deal. As soon as John Daley said he supported Steele for interim pres. it was no surprise she got it. As long as she merely feigned igdination over the Toddler process, she would get her just rewards.

Comment by Tom Thursday, Jul 20, 06 @ 12:07 am

  22. Toddler Stroger looks like Urkel

Comment by Ving Rhemes Thursday, Jul 20, 06 @ 6:37 am

  23. I don’t know Peraica, but I am voting for him at least as a protest vote, this hereditary succession and coronation is the worst of our traditions, just because some white people do it doesn’t mean Stroger or blacks can do it, and I am neither black nor white–so what about me

Comment by Lifelong Dem Thursday, Jul 20, 06 @ 6:48 am

  24. The most interesting development in all of this is the padding of the county payroll over the last several months despite a hiring freeze as reported by Carol Marin…just adding a few here and there while folks are distracted by the circus…someone needs to ascertain if this is true ASAP…I hope Steele fires all of Strogers immediate stooges who were “running” the county while he was recuperating…

Comment by Loop Lady Thursday, Jul 20, 06 @ 7:18 am

  25. Unfortunately Peraica is a guy who put his own son on the County payroll, and he’s got other problems. Republicans squander another opportunity.

But now if Claypool could be persuaded to switch parties and replace Peraica on the ballot, now you’re talkin’!

Comment by Anon Thursday, Jul 20, 06 @ 8:34 am

  26. Not reported in the Tribune story is the fact that the general interested public (50-75 people) was deliberately excluded from that Cook County Board meeting. The general public had to stand in line like cattle without admission unitl the very end of the meeting because the Board room intentionally was packed with Department Heads and other County employees even though there was no adminstative business on the agenda.IT WAS REALLY AN OUTRAGE! It appeared to me to be fairly typical of the “public be damned” attitude of the Cook County Democratic Party in its slatemaking decision and all the related machinations. But at least, the Cook County Democratic Party made an effort to accommodate the parties interested in the slatemaking meeting. The County Board doesn’t welcome public scrutiny and treated the public with complete and utter disdain.

There were no rabblerousers - in fact a ggod portion of the public appeared to be journalism students form Columbia and Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism. The Medill students were given the privilege of admission inot the anteroom so they could hear the discussion after the Columbia students gave up and went to cover a city council meeting instead.

  27. What is Bobby Steele going to do about the Burge report????
The State’s Attorneys worked with the cops to convict innocent people and used torture.

Comment by Amnesty Thursday, Jul 20, 06 @ 9:53 am

  28. What a surpise. Blago did’nt show for the Pro-Israel rally. He has proven over and over he does not need their vote. He has already got all their donations(cash) and Rod’s true to form again throwing them under the bus. What a swell guy.

Comment by MAGGIE Thursday, Jul 20, 06 @ 10:09 am

  29. To the question re Beavers: John Stroger’s resignation is not effective until July 31. His replacements won’t take over until then.

Comment by RoseyB Thursday, Jul 20, 06 @ 10:35 am

  30. Oh, shut up, Amnesty. Geezus.

Bobbie Steele isn’t going to do a thing about the Burge report. All the players are gone and the statutes have run their course. That was just a dumb thing to even ask. Let her focus on the budget. She isn’t that bright to begin with.

And is it me, or are people acting like Claypool never got a chance to run? There was a vote, folks, like it or not, and Forrest lost. So shut up with this crap:

But now if Claypool could be persuaded to switch parties and replace Peraica on the ballot, now you’re talkin’!

    Give me a break.

So stop crying in your half-calf, lo-carb, mochachino lattes with steamed goat milk, or whatever you silly lakefront yuppies drink, and just go away.

    Ugh.

Comment by Prez of the FTPC Thursday, Jul 20, 06 @ 1:55 pm
