I’m in Detroit at the moment. Came in last night for the White Sox game. I thought I’d try blogging with my Treo instead of lugging my laptop. Big mistake. So, this will be it until later this afteroon. Thankfully, there isn’t much in the papers at the moment.
But maybe I missed something, so point us to stories in comments and blog your thoughts about them.

Did you read that even though the loterry isn’t for sale Blago is hiring a consultant to oversee it.Even with Madigan telling him no.Do you think it is time for Madigan to move Blago out of the way so Lisa has a shot in 4 years?

Forest City….what was the point of your post, that’s already been debated here….are you that stupid? Probably
Comment by Skeeeter Thursday, Jul 20, 06 @ 8:55 am
Forest you need to look at his Disapporval rating that went up it will play into the final vote.Plus they will trying to knock her completely out and all they done was make her mad.

Although he has not announced, Mayor Daley is obviously planing to run next time.
He already has David Axelrod (campaign guru to the stars) doing damage control on the findings of the Burge Report, which suggests that as Cook County state’s atty, Daley was less than zealous in rooting out police brutality. Ignored it, actually.
And, since the victims were largely black, some black politicans are saying Daley may pay politically.
What might that price be. Would blacks actually try to unseat him by running their own candidate?
Who would that candidate be. And if not, what might Daley and Axelrod be cooking up to pay them off?

Rich –
We won Game One without your being there. What happened last night. Don’t put a hex on my beloved Sox
Comment by Truthful James Thursday, Jul 20, 06 @ 9:09 am
The Burge stuff deserves some attention here, for sure. Unbelievable. We’ve had our own little Third World-style torture factory right here in our own Toddlin’ Town backyard, but we can’t muster the outrage toward it that we do toward news clips from countries most of us can’t even locate on a map, halfway around the world.
The Burge case(s) equal some of our neighbors torturing others of our neighbors. Maybe our national War On Terror could save some travel expenses by zeroing-in on these examples of homeland insecurity.

Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s office is hiring a consultant to prepare for the sale or lease of the Illinois State Lottery, even though the General Assembly has not signed off on the plan.
Comment by OrangeCrush Thursday, Jul 20, 06 @ 9:30 am
In the early 80’s, I was a police officer in a small town in Central Illinois. On occasion, I would come across some minorities from Chicago traveling through town. Most of the time, they were in need of assistance with a broken down vehicle and I would stop to give them some help. The majority of these travelers would sit quietly and appeared to be in great fear of me. I couldn’t understand at the time what the problem was that they were so afraid of the police. I’d often wondered what the heck Chicago police had done to place that type of fear in their citizens. Now I get it.
Comment by Walking Wounded Thursday, Jul 20, 06 @ 9:34 am
I thought the Pioneer Press coverage of the pro-Israel rally was notable.
5,000 people rally in downtown Chicago, and Rod Blagojevich doesn’t show up. What was he thinking?
Comment by Yellow Dog Democrat Thursday, Jul 20, 06 @ 9:47 am
“…you need to look at his Disapporval rating that went up it will play into the final vote…”
DOWNSTATE, apropos to yesterday’s QOTD, you remind me of another joke Blagojevich is fond of telling, the punchline of which is: “I know there’s a pony in here somewhere!”
Oh, and Obama headlining the Harkin Steak Fry is a big deal. See the Tribune.

Does anyone else think YDD is really Edwin Eisendrath?
I’m not sayin’, I’m just sayin’.
Comment by BuckTurgidson Thursday, Jul 20, 06 @ 10:03 am
Buck - Unlike Edwin Eisendrath, I actually have opinions beyond “Rod Blagojevich is George Ryan (Or Dick Cheney)”.
BTW, Zorn offers an interesting and more critical view of the Burge Report.
Comment by Yellow Dog Democrat Thursday, Jul 20, 06 @ 10:14 am
YDD I would say that Buckyboy doesn’t have an opinion
Comment by DOWNSTATE Thursday, Jul 20, 06 @ 10:21 am
Would it be legal to extend the statute of limitations on police torture, like they did on child molestation? That could turn this into a Springfield story.
Comment by Anonymous Thursday, Jul 20, 06 @ 10:26 am
“YDD I would say that Buckyboy doesn’t have an opinion”
Not sure what that means, so in my opinion, it was a goofy thing to write without making some attempt -lame though I’m certain it would be- to explain it.
I also have this opinion: You’re taking yourselves a teeny weenie bit too seriously.
And here’s a fact: We’re off topic.
Back on, I’ll bite on my own tease:
Obama headlining the Harkin Steak Fry is a huge deal. It sends perhaps the most profound signal yet that he’s not just trying to sell books - but that he’s thinking about WH 2008. And why not? A recent poll in IA put Edwards ahead of HRC. Now Edwards has a lot of love in Iowa - but is Obama not still the enchanting new guy?
First Amendment aside, I’m really talking process here. I think this blog has seen the back and forth on Obama’s fitness to be a candidate ad nauseum. Has anyone opinions on the horserace aspect?
Comment by BuckTurgidson Thursday, Jul 20, 06 @ 10:38 am
Another week has passed and Cini still has his state job. Blago, where is your outrage?
Comment by Anon Thursday, Jul 20, 06 @ 10:52 am
It won’t be long befor Blogo starts throwing his people under the bus to make him look like he got rid of a few “bad apples.” As was said by another….the wheels on the bus go thump, thump, thump!!
Comment by Justice Thursday, Jul 20, 06 @ 11:07 am
Buck, I’m also not Anon, and I’ve been called worse things than “Edwin Eisendrath.” Although unlike the Gov, I’ve never been confused with Mayor Daley.
Most movements would love to have 10,000 people at a rally, but apparently that’s a failure for immigration.
Comment by Yellow Dog Democrat Thursday, Jul 20, 06 @ 11:14 am
It’s a long way from a steak fry to the White House. He still is a freshman senator, and I doubt whether he can convince the primary crowd that he has the experience to be more than a possible vice-prez candidate.

Comment by Anon Thursday, Jul 20, 06 @ 12:32 pm
Blago is to the point now that some of these people that he throws under the bus will create a vacum and suck him under.Cini will not take a fall for anyone that’s why the feds are using the Rico it carries a lot of time, which none of these people want, and it can open people up.If the feds had nothing they would not of told L. Madigan to shut her investigation down. When Fritzy get all the T’s crossed and the I’s dotted he will come knocking just like he did with Denying Ryan. Our new Governor will be either JBT or Quinn.

Comment by Timbuktu Thursday, Jul 20, 06 @ 12:51 pm
What a surprise Blago was a no show for the pro - Israel rally. He has proven over and over he does not need the Jewish vote. He already has their money. True to Rod’s form, again throwing them under the bus in favor of Louis Farrakhan supporters. Gee what a swell guy.

The way he’s handled his market brand, now is the time to speculate about Forrest Claypool’s political fecundity. What is the most fertile ground for Forrest’s future?
Comment by Anon Thursday, Jul 20, 06 @ 1:12 pm
Forrest Claypool?
Run for Mayor as a Reform candidate if Daley does not. He won’t get a shred of the Black vote, but he can still win.
Recall that the Mayor’s race now has a runoff, not a plurality vote, so Forrest could win by knocking out the 11th Ward candidate in the first vote, then win one-on one against Meeks.
With Claypool as Mayor and Peraica as County Board President, a bright new day would finally open for the oppressed people of Chicago and Cook County.

Burge, smurge. Ancient history. What do past, alleged miranda/escobedo rights violations have to do with a political blog? The alleged victims weren’t librarians to begin with. I’m usually a bit to the left, but come one!
Comment by Wile Coyote Thursday, Jul 20, 06 @ 1:58 pm
Looks like someone wants to change the subject. I would still like to discuss why Blago would not show up at the Jewish Pro-Israel rally. Could it be his largest contributor and close personal friend Tony Ruzko is also a large contributor to Louis Farrakhan.
Comment by MAGGIE Thursday, Jul 20, 06 @ 2:12 pm
Is it true that the Marlboro Woman’s own poll has her way down?
This will be a four pack day for her.
Comment by Anon Thursday, Jul 20, 06 @ 2:16 pm
Ancient history?! Read today’s Tribune editorial, Getting away with torture:
When the same names of police officers kept coming up in reports, the same torture techniques kept arising in the same region of the city, why didn’t the leaders of the Chicago Police Department or the Cook County state’s attorney’s office muster a thimbleful of outrage–or even enough curiosity to go after them?
The special prosecutors Wednesday politely suggested “there might have been some slippage” in the state’s attorney’s office at the time.
In the early 1980s, the office was headed by Richard M. Daley, now mayor, and, just under him, Richard Devine, now Cook County state’s attorney….prosecution would have been possible in some cases. And short of prosecution, if anyone in authority had spoken out, the torture techniques that went on for years in the hidden corners of Chicago police facilities could have been stopped.
No one did. No one stopped it. Those who could have apparently didn’t care enough to try. That is Chicago’s shame.
Don’t you think someone is going to ask Mayor Daley why he ignored the patterns of police torture if he runs for re-election? Don’t you think it will appear in a t.v. ad or two?
The statute of limitations may have expired in the criminal courts, but there is no statute of limitations for civil rights violators at the ballot box.

Okay, I have one for you. For whatever reason, I just received an invitation to Jim Watson’s, (R) Jacksonville, 5th annual backyard birthday party. I’m not sure how old the guy is, but I’d say 41 or 42.
My problem is that the invite says that you have to pay $10.per person, $25. per family, or $75. per sponsor to attend.
Hey Jim, instead of charging people money to come celebrate your birth, why not put on a free gig to celebrate the people that keep voting you into office. I mean really, how Republican are you? The last time I heard, you weren’t hurting for money.
Buy a keg of beer, roll up your sleeves, and invite people over to join you, geek.
JJ, that’s beautiful. Ten-bucks says he eats it.

CMS is working overtime soliciting consultants. The solicitation for the new IPAM group will be out soon - so all that information can be gathered and paid for twice. The IPAM results were paid for - but never have been delivered. Just think of all the campaign contributions that will roll in with the thought of these two contracts.
