Question of the day

Posted in:

* Rep. Christian Mitchell (D-Chicago) participated in a charity boxing match last weekend. He’s not exactly known as a tough guy around the Statehouse, but he won a three-round bout against somebody who outweighed him by about 20 pounds. Here’s some video of Round One

Mitchell is wearing black trunks and pink gloves in the video.

* The Question: Which Illinois politicians would you like to see box each other? Who would win? (Notice that I added “Illinois” to the question because I really don’t care about politicians from other states.)

It doesn’t look like anybody wins at this point, but Quinn loses.

  8. I’d like to see Kyle McCarter vs. Dan Duffy. Pretty sure McCarter would win, but it would be a fun one to watch.

Afterwards, Duffy can claim he didn’t lose but then Cullerton will have the video evidence to prove it.

  9. Elliot Spitzer V Anthony Weiner

Carlos Danger goes down in 2nd.

    Comment by I'm Strapped Friday, Oct 25, 13 @ 1:12 pm

  10. Jack Franks vs. Governor Quinn

Quinn wins because Franks doesn’t actually show up to box, but he talks about it a lot beforehand.

  11. Munoz vs. Duffy with an undercard of Jacobs vs. McCarter

  14. Yeah, I like…

    Jacobs v. McCarter

Scored by a State’s Attorney of Jacob’s choice, a State’s Attorney of McCarter’s choice, and an ASA from Sangamon County scoring the bout, or at least telling everyone who “punched/poked/shoved” the other more …

  15. “William j Kelly - Friday, Oct 25, 13 @ 1:03 pm:
    Make me an offer!”

Bill Kelly v. Bill Kelly’s Ego
Bill Kelly would be outweighed by 100 pounds.

    Bill Kelly v. Brendan Reilly.
Bill Kelly would tell people he was taking on the fight and then he would find a place to hide.

Bill Kelly v. the 42nd Ward GOP Committeeman Field
The only question would be which one would knock Kelly out first.

    Bill Kelly v. Jay Levine
Jay would snarl in Bill’s general direction and Bill would rush to file a lawsuit.

Comment by Skeeter Friday, Oct 25, 13 @ 1:40 pm

  16. == Walsh v. Emanuel ==

But Joe starts every fight by claiming he’s been fouled.

  21. Skeeter (AKA “2 Chickn 2 use real name”),

How’s this for a friendly offer from one man to an anonymous commentator:
Three one minute rounds. Loser makes a $500 contribution to the winner’s charity.
My charity would be the Ancient Order of Hibernians - Natasha McShane Fund. See the link:

  22. Ron Stephens v Tim Johnson

Comment by Dirty Red Friday, Oct 25, 13 @ 2:23 pm

  23. Foster vs. Oberweis

The matchup sprang into my head as soon as I read the QOTD.

In 2008 when they ran against each other in IL-14, I watched video of one of the editorial board interviews. I think it was during one of the very first questions that Foster stuttered when he answered. Then Oberweis answered and he did it while mimicking and exaggerating Foster’s stutter.

(It’s something that has happened to me so I guess that’s why it has stuck with me.)

Anyway, it’s nice to daydream for a moment about Foster taking out a bully.

I still have the clip and if Oberweis somehow ends up running for U.S. Senate I’ll be sure to repost it early and often.

  24. My wife and I volunteered for Ringside in 2012. It benefits Mercy Home in Chicago, and is actually a really fun event. I encourage everyone to check it out next year.

As for who I’d like to see, probably Harry Reid in his prime vs. JJJr. Former amateur boxer vs. a black belt. My money would actually be on Reid.

  25. I’d want to see a cage match with all four Republican goober candidates.

Winner gets to wear the Carhartt

Comment by Joe Bidenopolous Friday, Oct 25, 13 @ 2:56 pm

  26. Blagojevic vs. Madigan. Blago will of course mouth off and jump all over the ring while MM stands over in the corner and knocks him out in the last round….

  27. Bill Mitchell v someone else nobody cares about

Comment by Midstate Indy Friday, Oct 25, 13 @ 3:27 pm

  28. Quinn vs. Squeezy! (It’d be hilarious–the Guv. would be swinging wildly but never land a hit since it’s only an ANimated beast–plus, it might even look like he’s fighting nobody but himself, like Shadow Boxing)!!

Comment by Just The Way It Is One Friday, Oct 25, 13 @ 3:32 pm

  29. 1994 Quinn v. 2013 Quinn would be a good bout.

  30. “Skeeter (AKA “2 Chickn 2 use real name”),”

Oooh, Bill Kelly wants to fight me! Oh no!

Bill, you sure do seem tough now.
How tough were you when Jay Levine snapped at you?

We all got a good laugh over that one.
I like Jay, but let’s be honest — Jay is a skinny old man. Bill, you were terrified of an old man. And now you want to act the role of the tough guy?

Bill, nobody wants to fight you. Nobody cares about you.

I find your stuff amusing in a “What crazy thing will Bill Kelly do in order to get people to say `Bill Kelly’” sort of way, but when it comes down to it, I really don’t care.

Nobody wants to fight you Bill. The people that have been mentioned by others all matter. You don’t matter, Bill.

Try this, Bill — run a race, and get a few votes. Finish someplace other than last. Then come back to us to play.

I bet you loved this comment though. You got to read the words “Bill Kelly” several times. For Bill Kelly, that’s the primary objective.

Comment by Skeeter Friday, Oct 25, 13 @ 3:51 pm

  31. Returning to people who have relevance –

    Ann Williams v. Kelly Cassidy.

They can both be the nicest people in the world, but both have a tough streak running through.

If they got angry enough for that tough side to come through, it would be an epic battle.

Slight edge to Kelly, since she’s raised twins and a parent of twins can win any battle.

Comment by Skeeter Friday, Oct 25, 13 @ 4:01 pm

  32. Walsh V. WIND audience
Since there isn’t one - fight cancelled

    Rauner V. Rahm
Rauner wins, Rahm gets casino consolation prize

    REMATCH: Kelly V. Levine
Levine throws (second) temper tantrum, cries that Kelly is in the ring

    Skeeter V. Skeeter
    Who cares? Grow up already!

Comment by Just sayin' Friday, Oct 25, 13 @ 4:12 pm

  33. Kelly Cassidy v Scott Drury

Comment by Dirty Red Friday, Oct 25, 13 @ 4:20 pm

  34. And it doesn’t matter who fights. Jim Sacia wins.

Comment by Dirty Red Friday, Oct 25, 13 @ 4:21 pm

  35. Crespo v. Arroyo for the Latino division

Mussman v. Williams for the lightweight division

Stephens v. Lang for the pitbull division

Sandoval v. Colvin for the heavyweight division

Duffy v. Cullerton for the grudge match

D’Amico v Ford for the middleweight division

Dunkin v. Cultra because it would be entertaining

Comment by reformer Friday, Oct 25, 13 @ 4:23 pm

  36. Evelyn Sanguinetti vs. Whoever Quinn selects as LiteGov

Sanguinetti would get knocked out in Round 1, but would sue the makers of the canvas ring, the arena owners, and the village for their own good and donate the money to charity.

Comment by OurMagician Friday, Oct 25, 13 @ 4:33 pm

  37. Roland Burris vs. Rod Blagojevich.
Roland would hit below the belt but Rod is probably sharpening his fighting skills in the hoosegow.
