Republican Bruce Rauner’s gubernatorial campaign released yesterday a new web video attacking Governor Pat Quinn for the failure of the legislature to act pension reform during the just concluded Veto Session in Springfield.
“Illinois’ pension crisis has been building for two decades because the career politicians refuse to fundamentally transform the pension system,” said Rauner in a statement.
“It’s time to move towards a 401(k)-style program, similar to what most workers have in the private sector, and refuse to make any more special deals with government union bosses,” said the long-time Republican insider.

Detroit just declared bankruptcy.
And if we don’t change direction, Illinois is next.
The highest unemployment in the Midwest. The worst credit rating in America. And 100 billion in public pension debt.
The question is what to do.
Pat Quinn won’t change direction. Higher taxes, record spending, more Springfield failures.
It’s time for fundamental change in Illinois. It’s time for a leader with the guts to deliver.
Bruce Rauner for governor. Shake up Springfield. Bring back Illinois.

Well, Detroit is in the Midwest, unlike other videos with Mountains from other states, and fields from other states … Detroit is at least getting proper credit …

If we look past the fact that the State of Illinois can’t declare bankruptcy like a municipality… then ya, it’s pretty good. I wasn’t expecting intellectual honesty out of Bulldozer Bruce anyways
I like their Big Voice Guy, puts chills down your spine without being to over-the-top. Has a hint of Bill Curtis in him.

“F” for accuracy, probably “B+” for accomplishing what he wants to do — reinforce stereotypical negatives, and raise his name recognition. best, and the most legitimate part of it is going after quinn.

He just lost all credibility in my book. Clearly implies the state of Illinois declaring bankruptcy. He knows better. Reminds me of a toy my kids had a couple decades back, “Decepticon”.

Probably a B in presentation, but utterly insane in fact.
If Bruce Rauner would have Clouted his Daughter into Detriot’s top school, then this ad makes sense, but since states can’t file for bankruptcy, a Carhartt jacket will glaze over these facts at some point I guess.

Lame, no one gets that message nor does it inspire anyone to action. Also the 5 state systems pension debt is $97 billion so not quite $100 billion and if you were to factor in the other public pension plans you would be well over $140 billion. Still probably voting for him over the rest of the field.

You don’t have to go anywhere else to get this kind of thinking, and the belief that this is the path to victory. I hear the Detroit comparison often, out here in the burbs. That comes with some unsaid associations for some.
This harsh message appeals to too narrow a base to work beyond the primary.
If they stay this stark, it will be a test of the GOP voters’ thinking.

If you’re pat brady or dillard especially you’re drilling 2 messages at rauner right now-his democratic ties, and then also forcing him to reveal his cards on social issues. Social conservatives have a big opportunity right now that they blew on the kirk senate race a few years ago to exploit and damage rauner who seems flimsy on those issues.

It hinges, like so much of partisan politics, whether you believe fundamentally in Republican competence.
Americans who came of age in Carter-to-Reagan generally do. A new generation that came of age in Clinton-to-Bush often is skeptical. As memories of Dubya fade, if the economy doesn’t recover, I’d expect still younger generations to say, “Well, this status quo sucks, let’s try this Republican guy.”
I came of age in Clinton-to-Bush myself, so I admit I’m skeptical of Republican competence. I see Rauner (as well as Romney) as saying, “Hey there’s this big problem, elect me and then I’ll tell you what you voted on to fix it.”
But I don’t actually think there’s a secret plan in the cupboard waiting to be pulled out- nothing that Rauner could ever pass, unless once in office he makes up with Madigan and Cullerton and -really- screws the Republican base (which is possible!)
But since nobody really knows what Rauner’s plan is, and his entire campaign depends on keeping us guessing right up to Election Day, I’ll decline. Because I have no faith in the GOP brand as the party of competent governance, fiscal responsibility, or really anything else. But I concede that others’ mileage may vary here.

Can we create an Illinois/Chicago version of Godwin’s Law?
We can call it the Rauner Rule (Or Reducto ad Detroitium): When one invokes Detroit in any conversation about Chicago, Cook County or Illinois, that person or persons lose the argument.
It is an incredibly lazy analogy, and veers awfully close to dog whistle politics.
Off of my soapbox - why do this? Because it’s probably an effective message, and it’s pretty well put together. This GOP primary is going to be fascinating to watch.

It is meant to appeal to GOP voters, most of whom are low information voters/conspiracy freaks who believe that states can declare bankruptcy.
OK, not “most.” That’s an overstatement. But clearly a lot of GOP voters do believe those things, and Rauner is happy to play to that prejudice.
It doesn’t say much for Rauner’s integrity, but it should do well a primary ad.
At least he’s not suggesting a referendum.

From admittedly anecdotal evidence, talking to a variety of people in Chicago, Rauner’s ads are being negated by a single word: “Emanuel.” The connections with the Mayor have prospects of being much more damaging than the Dillard video for Obama. The negative comments I have heard so far border on the visceral.

This add is brilliant… there is now way to counter it with something like pointing out how you stopped the GA pay to try and fix the problem…. or as mentioned that States cant file bankruptcy….
and if they do pass pension changes in January it will be an even more effective add bashing the govenorover a past problem that he fixed.
over all great strategy…. I wonder if he will order his men to charge the across the open field into the canons next….

Worst ad I’ve seen in a while. Personally, I don’t like the news clips followed combined with white noise as if emphasizing you’re watching TV on TV. And the “Bankruptcy…bankruptcy…bankruptcy thing is annoying–plus it has nothing to do with Rauner or who he is. And the drama in the announcer’s voice at the end…pfft.
Probably comparable to something a high school student puts together for a project–and it says NADA, ZIP about Rauner.
I’m not a Rauner supporter, and he needs more ads like that.

Is a C- at best. Talks too much about Detroit, which not many people in Illinois care about. Vague on specifics. Quinn may not be good leader, but is not corrupt. What does “shake up” actually accomplish?

Rauner is right in that Quinn has failed, but and ironically, Rauner is following Quinn’s script for failure: alienate even members of your own party, as well as the opposition. Where then does the coalition necessary to effect change come from?? It has eluded Quinn and it is troubling that Rauner doesn’t get it. He is singing to the choir in re the dire economic straits we are in - duh - we get it. Rauner keeps talking about shaking things up - he has no idea how government works.

Two points:
1 - I liked the fact that he identified the fact that Illinois has large financial problems.
2 - I was looking for his solution to the financial problems but could not find them in the ad. Did I miss something in the ad or do I need to wait for his next ad for his solution?

It’s a very good ad; well conceived and well executed. I agree about taking license with the fact a state cannot declare bankruptcy. That being the case, bankruptcy is also a protection method not available to the state. The stats are correct and their delivered in an easy understandable way. He is calling this a crisis. Whether you like him or not, the question is to rate the value/effectiveness of the ad. It’s solid.

The Ad can can be rated “solid” but if you think that just “taking license” with a fact … a state can not declare bankruotcy is enough of a critique that is a bit insane alomg with the idea that a state can be bankrupt.

Now after watching it, I almost just want to laugh. “Nincompoopery,” as Wordslinger just summed it up with, will do just fine to echo my sentiments as well. And there’s something about that Outdoorsman/Hunter’s jacket BR that just cracks me up, too–and seems SO disingenuous somehow…!
