A little-known candidate for governor is hoping to take down Gov. Pat Quinn even before voters head to the polls next March.
Democrat Tio Hardiman and his running mate, lieutenant governor candidate Brunell Donald, filed a challenge to Quinn’s nominating petitions Monday, claiming the incumbent chief executive doesn’t have enough valid signatures to get on the ballot.
To qualify for a spot on the ballot, state law requires a candidate for governor to collect signatures from 5,000 registered voters.
Quinn says he’s just fine.
“We are confident in the number and quality of the governor’s nomination petitions,” campaign spokeswoman Leslie Wertheimer said Tuesday.
I highly doubt that Hardiman will succeed. But some Quinn allies have also challenged Hardiman’s signatures. That might be worth watching.

Well, Quinn’s folks didn’t really have a lot of time to collect signatures, so might be interesting.

An unopposed incumbent governor shouldn’t need more than a couple of days to bring in 5,000 signatures. That’s an average of less than 50 in each county.

Quinn’s signatures are fine. They collected over 40,000 and had a thorough vetting process.

Quinn’s signatures are fine. I heard they collected over 40,000 total signatures and had a thorough vetting process. Tio’s signatures, on the other hand, were a complete mess. He won’t stay on the ballot.

Oh, sure, that’ll work. Tio, people who live in glass houses … never mind. I suspect it’s a good news / bad news situation, because I’m sure the state board of elections will give everyone’s petitions all of the consideration they deserve. As for who should start sweating, I’m gonna guess that between you and Pat Quinn, that would be you.
