Campaign odds and ends

UPDATE x1: Dillard’s attendance at Obama’s 2009 inauguration stirs controversy

UPDATE x1: This story has generated a surprising amount of reaction.

Rich Miller at CapitolFax thought the accusation about Dillard attending the 2009 Obama inauguration was the “pot calling the kettle black” given Rauner’s history of contributions to Democrats.

The Dillard campaign reacted as well. A spokesman for the campaign contacted IR and voiced his displeasure and disappointment that IR didn’t “tell [our] low-information readers that this was clearly NOT a donation.”

Finally, Dillard shows some backbone. More like this, please. And I don’t mean he should be whacking IR again, either. I just mean he ought to tell us where he is and where he wants the state to go, regardless of his audience.

* My vote for creepiest Tweet of the year which was then retweeted by an Illinois candidate…

@FuriousCStyles Thank you! I really appreciate the support!

Oy.

* From The Fix’s top 15 gubernatorial races of 2014

5. Illinois (D): Can Quinn keep up the momentum he built this year in 2014? Things will get more difficult for him after the March primary, when the eventual Republican nominee can focus on him, not the competitive three-way GOP primary underway right now. Businessman Bruce Rauner is competing for the Republican nomination with state Sens. Kirk Dillard and Bill Brady. (Previous ranking: 5)

Notice anybody missing from the GOP field? I know we’re just in fly-over country, but that Washington Post blog is supposed to be a must-see.

  1. In their defense, I think a lot of people have forgotten that Rutherford is running. Ditto Dillard.

Good on Dillard, enough with the doing what the Right expect. You will get hammered from them anyway at some point, Sen. Dillard, so start showing them you are not going to take it without responding.

Creepy Tweet indeed. Social Media brings out all kinds.

  4. Mark Rhoads’ response on IR should end this discussion.

“To repeat, the Illinois Inaugural Gala is always held every four years as a nonpartisan celebration of American democracy regardless of which party wins the White House and it is always well attended by all members of Congress from both parties and many state lawmakers from both parties and we are very proud of that bipartisan tradition.”

  5. In order:
    Good for Dillard.
    Bad for Harold.
    Lazy for the Washington Post.

  6. Playful? Creepy? Not 100% sure either way.

What is 100% certain is that “FuriousCStyles” needs to change that user name. Now.

  7. It is interesting that the Post included Brady, who has raised about $50 last quarter, and ignored Rutherford.

It seems that if one candidate is not going to be taken seriously, it would be Brady.

That being said, you do have to wonder if the field will look this way come election day. We had one pull out of it last time when he figured out he had no chance.

  8. I really hope the Dillard/Edgar team has enjoyed their 15 years or whatever it’s been since edgar left office of playing party royalty and offering ego and wisdom because after dillard gets destroyed in the primary the party is moving on from them. He’s Rose Garden-ed these Gubernatorial campaigns instead of offering his own vision.

Let’s not pretend today’s washington post is of the Broder vintage. And George Will did once write a 600 word piece extolling Jack Ryan as a national star on the rise.

  9. Maybe Rutherford hasn’t bought enough stuff on Amazon to get a mention in the Washington Post??

  10. ===It seems that if one candidate is not going to be taken seriously, it would be Brady.===

Brady was the Nominee last time, so I am sure the named clicked.

As for Rutherford, he is last Alphabetically, so the drop is just an oversight not an admission of someone’s strenght or weakness.

  11. 2010 Governors election:

    Quinn: 1.745 million
    Brady: 1.713 million.

I’d take him seriously. He didn’t have any money then, either.

  12. So you’re some poor researcher working for Chris Cilizza (the guy who publishes that column) at the Washington Post and you’re researching the IL GOP Gov race. Do you need to maybe work on your googling skills? I mean Rutherford is no more quiet than the other two not-Bruce’s. Weird.

Comment by Chicago Cynic Friday, Dec 13, 13 @ 4:03 pm

  13. I don’t know Wordslinger.

In the biggest GOP wave since 1994, Brady somehow managed to lose.

Losing in a wave year doesn’t sound like a reason to take him seriously.

We expect serious candidates to raise money.

Given that he hasn’t, we have to ask if he’s doing it on purpose (i.e. he thinks fundraising is either bad or necessary) or if he’s not fully committed to seeing this one out.

Comment by Skeeter Friday, Dec 13, 13 @ 4:08 pm

  14. - Skeeter -,

You just keep practicing law, ok?

1.7 million votes, you take them seriously in a 4 way race.

    lol
