A day after Bruce Rauner offered qualified support for a minimum-wage hike, a new video surfaced Thursday showing the GOP gubernatorial candidate telling an audience of Downstate Republicans in September that he “adamantly, adamantly” opposes raising the income bar for Illinois’ working poor.
The video in which Rauner appears to contradict the minimum-wage platform he outlined Wednesday came from the Democratic-funded Super PAC, American Bridge 21st Century, which Thursday posted on YouTube the recording of Rauner addressing the issue four months ago before Ford County Republicans.
“I am adamantly, adamantly against raising the minimum wage. My view is we already have the second highest unemployment in America. We already have an outrageously high unemployment rate among low-income, poor minority kids in Chicago, in Rockford, in Peoria and East St. Louis. And raising the minimum wage is just going to blow them out and take away their jobs. We cannot do this,” Rauner said in the video.
“Let’s be clear: The right answer to raised wages is a booming economy with employers competing to hire people and having our young people well educated and well trained,” Rauner said, drawing applause from the crowd gathered Sept. 7 at a Gibson City golf course.

While I don’t like Rauner, what he said in that video does not contradict his current position. His point in the video is that Illinois should not have a min. wage higher than other states because it makes Illinois less competitive. If the feds raised the minimum wage, every state would have to comply, thus not harming Illinois’ competitiveness with other states.

Which position are you refering to;
The one that says a $1 needs to be rolled back, taking money from those making minimum wage…or
The belief that Illinois can go as high as $10. as a minimum wage, as Rauner stated he was not opposed to, after getting hammered…or
Are you adamantly, adamantly not understanding the 180 degree turn yesterday, and this video which say that going above $8.25 is something “Bruce Rauner” is adamantly, adamantly opposed to doing?

It will be interesting to see how the Rauner team recovers from this. Before the minimum wage incident, it looked as if everything was coming together for him. Bad timing too considering this is during his bus tour around the state.

Wake up.
You put the Principle in jeopardy by trying to get ahead of one train, but crossed thos tracks to get hit by another train!
Amateur hour in handling the press, your Principle, and your message, which is probably thee of the most important aspects of being on a campaign staff … let alone a Paid Campaign Staff.
This is a Staff unforced error, no mistake about it.

I might buy gas across the state line if it is cheaper. Others may do the same w cigarettes. But i have yet to hear of anyone going across the state line to buy a big mac, bec their lower min wage “makes them more competitive”.
I expected brucey von carhartt to stumble in a debate over something like medicaid, or home rule. Not over something this basic. Cut it. I didnt say that. I was flippant. Raise it. No, i am adamant. Leave it as is.
If a pol takes cash, then votes contrary to the union….bribe. If BVC takes 6 figure checks from like minded folks , and says what they all think, busting unions and all….thats just fine.

i’m sure all of the minimum wage workers are watching this video on captiol fax now. i’m sure the minimum wage workers will be dramatically affected by the negative ads the unions run in the newspapers they never read or radios they never hear.

There is a lot of flip flopping here which is going to hurt him but he should have just stuck with these talking points. He can say he doesn’t want to raise the minimum wage because it will lead to job loss. He can’t say he wants to decrease the minimum wage and he especially can’t say he wants to decrease the minimum wage and then say he wants to increase the minimum wage and have these video’s surfacing.
The phrase, not ready for prime time is starting to come to mind.

He used the phrase “well trained?” I’d like to be a fly on the wall should he ever decide to address a group of HR execs and recruiters for large corporations. I’m not sure that that term is even in their vocab any more. And I can imagine how the discussion would proceed once someone in the audience brought that “fact” to his attention.

It seems to me a candidate can get by with a lot if he seems likeable. Such as Clinton or Obama. I don’t think Rauner has enough money to make himself likeable.

I don’t see a problem. His position is “evolving” on this issue. First, he was against a minimum wage increase, then he evolved into wanting a minimum wage decrease, yesterday he misspoke, and today he’s making a new commercial highlighting the Union bosses’ continued efforts to make a mountain out of a molehill buck an hour here, or there. Who’s counting anyway?

The ads write themselves: Bruce Rauner is spending millions of his own dollars to become our governor, a job which pays in a year what he currently makes in about 7 hours (on a bad day). As an investor, it would seem like Rauner would be expecting a bigger return on this investment that the governor’s salary. Perhaps his investment in Pennsylvania is instructive…

Rauner doesn’t care about these issues. He’s just blathering what he thinks he needs to say to get elected.
Put him down as a rich guy who thought being rich made him smart, wise and witty.

I just spent a few minutes researching the effect of a minimum wage hike on employment and guess what–economists disagree on the effect. So I will guess–not being an economist–that some badly-run businesses go fire all of their employees rather than pay them more, and some places figure out how to get along paying the new rate.

The tape would be a major problem if Bruce was running as a Democrat.
However, I suspect that most Republicans like the idea of lowering the minimum wage.
Right now, the statements probably help him in a primary.
He should simply let the comments sit and talk about whatever it is he thinks is important (probably bashing union leaders).
November is a heck of a long way off. He needs to convince GOP voters that he’s really one of them, and this should help.
Fight one battle at a time. Get the nomination. This will accomplish that goal.
Then worry about the next one.

Inconsistant tact on Minimum Wage, including go up to $10. and reducing it $1. is a factor in a Republican primary.
Three different positions does not show leadership, and a complete lack of understanding the political issue, and if Rauner gets out of the Primary, it is going to be hammered that Rauner cares very little about the Poor, and is quite the elitist.

Someone said Rauner is a “policy lightweight.” So, what does that make the people in charge running the state into the ground: “policy heavyweights?”
Nobody is talking about whether a higher minimum wage in Illinois is good for anyone. Why is Illinois doing so poorly with higher MW than surrounding states? Maybe one of the policy heavyweights on this board can enlighten everyone.

Class, I know you’re in there pitching, but nothing can change the fact that Bruce Rauner is a one percenter,and he’s running in a campaign where 95% of the voters aren’t. He has to adjust to that reality without seeming either false or condescending. My guess, won’t be easy.

HGF, Farmer Bruce has a reserved space on the Trib editorial page to address these issues directly, without having to answer questions from pesky reporters.
You get that when you’re the only candidate dropping money for spots on WGN and CLTV. Tribune Co. has to try to make money somewhere, somehow; the paper doesn’t even cover its nut.

Baron von Carhartt just can’t help himself. When you live in the bubble of wealth no one contradicts you or reminds you that what you said today does not match what you said last week. No one comes up with a video from months ago proving what you said yesterday can’t be relied upon as true. It must be very frustrating for the Baron to have to put up with so many little people in order to become their governor.

On one hand, you have a governor who cuts pensions, union contracts, services to the mentally ill and funding for homeless veterans shelters, all while presiding over one of the weakest economies in the country in terms of unemployment rate and additional metrics.
On the other hand, you have the only guy who could make him look like an ally of those constituencies.
I don’t know whether to laugh, cry or just give up.

I don’t know of anyone who says that raising the minimum wages creates more jobs. Listen, I wish we lived in a state where the business climate is friendly enough to mitigate the risks of jobs fleeing the state; but if you know of anyone who would give witness to that here in Illinois, I’d love to meet them. You can hate Rauner for telling it like it is or you can respect him for it. He just isn’t running for governor of a state with a solvent pension system, budget, business-friendly climate or reasonable legal climate.

Unless Bruxe Rauner can clout a child, or donate to a campaign, or wear a Carhartt Coat, or have a snow globe or sledgehammer in his hand, Bruce Rauner is all hat and no cattle.

Dearly Beloved, we are gathered here to mourn the recent loss of our close friend and recently departed comrade Bruce Rauner. Brother Bruce was fatally hurt while participating in his “first rodeo”. He had inadvertently been handed flip-flops to wear instead of cowboy boots by members of his inexperienced staff. His foot slipped out of the stirrup, and it was soon wedged in his mouth. Brother Bruce soon expired on the rodeo arena. The Reverend Bridget Kelly has been kind enough to fly here this afternoon from New Jersey to say a few words over our recent meal ticket and candidate Brother Bruce. Go ahead, “Bridge”—t. Say a few words. (Kelly): Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, total incompetence is a must—-. Rest in peace and obscurity, Brother Bruce.

This is exactly what happens when someone attempts to be someone they ARE NOT, jacket and watch not withstanding, he IS WHO WE THOUHT HE IS! If not on this issue, he would expose his real self on another issue and will likely do so still. He once described his desire to support Charter Schools because people just didn’t want their kids to go to school with THOSE kids. This elitist is not fit for public service and he is likely to find out it is very difficult to buy. He actually might have been better off to run a Scott Lee Cohen campaign and never have shown up anywhere.
