  1. Rauner says he made money off the Illinois Teachers Retirement System for 30 years. He had Stu Levine on the payroll for $25K a month when Levine was a decider on who got the business.

But he’s down on “insiders” and “union bosses” and thinks the recent pension deal doesn’t go far enough.

So he’s a billionaire off of public employee money. But he wants to cut their pensions.

    It’s breathtaking.

  2. Will Rauner rehab the Gov’s mansion on his dime?

  3. Show of hands
Anyone else notice that neither Charles or Slusher failed to ask what part of govt will you cut when $2 billion tax hike cash is gone.
Instead they have this very painful Q&A on work comp. OMG no one really cares about work comp
This was painful. FarmerBrucey must be happy that he got out the door before CaptFax released the facts on his fines.

  4. word, the funniest part of that statement, irony aside, is that it’s incorrect. According to Crain’s, the number is more like 15 years.

  5. According to Crain’s, the number is more like 15 –years.–

AA, that’s kind of odd. He must not have understood the question. That happens a lot, lol.

  6. From the feed:

=== Rauner to Brady: “You lost to the worst governor in America, and we’ve gotten a mess as a result.” ===

    Ouch.

  7. === Brady digs into Rauner, turning to him: “You have to come clean and transparent on this $25,000 a month contract with Stuart Levine.” ===

Double ouch. The next shoe to drop?

  9. Despite his current sinecure at Purdue, “My Man Mitch” also wasn’t exactly a big friend of education in Indiana.

  10. Soccermom, my favorite from the Great Mini-Mitch:

–Indianapolis - A new audit of Indiana’s job creation programs confirms what WTHR has been reporting for the past year: tens of thousands of new jobs promoted by state leaders have never come. The actual number of jobs created is far less than expected.–

  11. “Run it like a business”

Really wish Rutherford or Brady would challenge him on that. Rauner has never run any businesses. He buys and sells businesses. He made his money off of government contracts. Running government like a business is the ultimate meaningless GOP primary throwaway line.

It’s worse than Democrats saying “protect social security,” such BS.

Comment by Siriusly Thursday, Jan 16, 14 @ 12:49 pm

  12. All Rutherford had to do was stay cool.
He came off like a canon with thin skin.

    :(

  13. “I’m not going to put up with this, Bruce.”

That reads like feelings were hurt and someone either wanted to get all tough-guy-at-the-playground or take the ball and go home.

If it looks the way it reads, whomever said it (Dan?) best hope few GOP voters watch it.

Or maybe that works well with GOP voters.

    Forget it.

  14. From Korecki’s twitter:
==Rauner closes by taking shots at opponents. Rutherford goes nuts, starts pounding his pen, imploring “Mr Rauner” not to misrepresent facts==

I look forward to seeing this on video!

Comment by Robert the Bruce Thursday, Jan 16, 14 @ 2:34 pm

  15. === Or maybe that works well with GOP voters. ===

Others would say it comes across very well, especially since it appears to be someone standing up to the “elitist bully trying to buy our party”.

Or, in context, just a person standing up for himself when another person spreads falsehoods about him.

    That works well with everyone.

Comment by Formerly Known As... Thursday, Jan 16, 14 @ 2:44 pm

  16. I would have expected the candidate to stay on topic and directly address the comment or slander.

    Maybe he did.

It’s probably better to wait for a video or transcript and ignore “tweet” coverage.

Comment by Hans Sanity Thursday, Jan 16, 14 @ 2:52 pm

  17. Good luck running state government like a business. Let me know how that works out for you.

Comment by Demoralized Thursday, Jan 16, 14 @ 2:54 pm

  18. Meanwhile, the AP makes it sound like a relatively cordial exchange.

They also omit the questions about Stuart Levine, which other media outlets mention multiple times in tweets and print.

  19. @Hans Sanity - agreed. Either way, I think we’re all looking forward to seeing the debate. It sounds like there were a few sharp elbows thrown all around.

  20. Is the debate going to be on Chicago area broadcast TV tonight? If not, is already posted somewhere? youtube?

Comment by Hans Sanity Thursday, Jan 16, 14 @ 6:54 pm

  21. Glad to see Rutherford give back a little and call Rauner out with that exchange. Most people see Dan as a this nice guy who can relate to people (and he does way better than almost anyone), but there’s a side to him that will also stand up to bullies. Glad to see him stand up and fight today. It’s not a weakness nor thin skin. His skin got thickened four years ago. He’s as much the “statesman” in this campaign as anyone. Also glad to see Brady stay on attack message. A few months ago, I questioned how long it would take for Rauner to start running negative ads. I suspect those will start after today’s event –and after he loans himself another million to pay off campaign debt. He’s spending money faster than he’s earning it –not exactly what Illinois needs in it’s next Governor.

  22. The debate is on-line at abclocal.go.com

  23. Assuming Dan Rutherford can show Rauner’s assertions about Dan’s campaign funding were false, his response during the Rauner’s closing statements was appropriate.

Dillard, Rutherford, and Brady ought to unite in refusing to run TV ads and calling on Illinoisans to MUTE all Rauner ads.
