Falling ice has become an issue in Chicago following the rain and snow late Tuesday and early Wednesday, as political consultant Dan Curry can attest to firsthand.
He was walking downtown Wednesday afternoon when he was struck by falling icicles.
“It hurt. It felt like a baseball had hit me in the head,” Curry said. “The thing that really scared me was that there was a lot of blood, and I reached up and my hands were filled with blood and there was blood all over the place.”
Luckily, a couple of Good Samaritans stopped to help him.

It’s for real all right.
In my experience, the most dangerous spot is by the Stone Container Building at Michigan and Randolph.
Big chunks of ice break off that diamond-shaped, slanted glass roof. Missed my melon by inches more than once.

I narrowly missed getting beaned in the head with an ice chunk while I was walking in Chicago last evening. It fell about 5 or 6 inches in front of my face.

Had a friend get hit in the loop last night. Not major, thankfully.
I got nailed in Lakeview on Wednesday, but luckily the ice was just from a two-story building.

Pretty dangerous. A neighbor of ours once had a stroke caused by an icicle hitting her on the head when she was trying to clear her gutters. I can imagine what ice falling off a large building in the loop might do.

Twenty years ago, Donald Booth of Milwaukee was killed as he passed in front of the entrance of the Neiman Marcus department store and a 100-pound block of icecame loose 45 feet above and landed on him.
He was strolling down Michigan Ave to pass the time while his daughter was taking a college entrance exam.

Future historians will record- the truax dynasty began with an ice chunk, which is how Chicago came to be know as the city of big ice chunks.

Rich, I can tell this incident has really affected the political operatives on the campaign trail, even the most jaded of operatives are greeting their colleagues with the salutation - HEY!! watch for falling ice you stupid son of a b^€h!!!!

I was standing at my bus stop yesterday, and I swear I thought it was hailing. All the trees were shedding bits of ice.

Ok, 47th ward, you got me: I straight lol’d at that.
To the post: Ouch. My little one-story I can walk around and knock anything free that might be near walking paths, but some of those buildings in Chi would pack a beating.

It’s the thing you’re always worried about when you’re going to and fro, pretty much ANYwhere in Downtown Chicago when it starts to warm a bit. Why just yesterday, I myself, I should say, my VEHicle on the Expressway, dodged about a 2 foot chunk of Snow sliding off of one of the Overhead Street Signs–got a few of the “Trickle-down Effect icicles and/or snow pellets pop off the ‘ol windshield, though. Too close for MY comfort…!
Indeed, Folks, DO be careful out there, and keep a look out up, and around. People are often lookin’ at me like I’m a goof when I’m checking, especially around Buildings which have legally, but perhaps for good cause, POSTED their “Warning/Caution–Falling Ice and/or Snow” Signs and/or wooden horses in front of their Buildings, but ya can really never play it too safe in life…!
Meanwhile, all my best to Mr. Curryfor the trauma he suffered yesterday, and God’s Speed for a quick and hopefully thorough recovery…!
