A+ if it were on TV… A D because Rauner didn’t search the couch cushions for spare cash to put on TV… Over and Over…

Good. That’s all they have to say and play to establish the image of PQ they want out there.
People are always willing to believe the worst about politician, and only need a little nudge. Rauner should continue to avoid making any case with real evidence — strong hints will do just fine.

“Can of corn”, yikes.
Surprised this went Internet, would have thought this goes TV from Jump Street.

Might want to toss in a Pat Quinn calling Rod an honest man for good measure.
Comment by OneMan Tuesday, May 6, 14 @ 10:12 am
It bangs the drum. Strong pass on the pass/fail scale. That’s a lot of people making accusations in :34. The side/side compare with Blago is devastating if you are in the group of undecideds who have not been convinced of his choir boy image. He even takes a hit with them. Ouch. There is a print theme developing simultaneously in the large major metros. This is a lot more than an inconvenient image problem. Remember the animation of Stu Levine jumping around in a striped prison suit? Might see something similar with new characters.
Comment by A guy... Tuesday, May 6, 14 @ 10:12 am
I actually think this is a poor ad, unless the point is to throw a bone to those who probably are already leaning Rauner. If you don’t like Quinn, this just reinforces what you probably don’t like about him, if you like him, you ignore, and…
…if you’re on the fence between the two, I’m not sure how this helps, especially since Quinn can fire back with the same ad about Rauner buying votes/insider trading etc.
At some point Rauner has to actually unveil a plan and lead. I don’t think endless shots (legit and cheap) at Quinn is going to get him elected.

For some reason, Business Insider is digging into Rauner’s divorce record.
I don’t know what their interest is. You’d think the Tribbies would have been in it by now. They like reading divorce records.
Comment by wordslinger Tuesday, May 6, 14 @ 10:16 am
One thing I like about Rauner — he seems to be a good judge of expert staff, and willing to let them do what they do best, without second-guessing them.
Now that’s a business skill that actually can be applied in Gov’t.
Comment by Walker Tuesday, May 6, 14 @ 10:17 am
It lacks Sanguinetti. Smart, who knows how effective. From what I have seen from the past GOP, Bruce is at least savvy and a fighter.
Comment by Wumpus Tuesday, May 6, 14 @ 10:19 am
In four years will the Dems be running commercials of Bruce Rauner saying, “I had nothing to do with that?”

tying PQ to Rod didn’t work in the past. Why will it work now? PQ was elected twice having served as Lt. Gov. with Rod. This card has been played.

===For some reason, Business Insider is digging into Rauner’s divorce record.===
Timing is everything. If Rauner is going to spend over $60 million, sit on some juicy stuff while Rauner is climbing to get your “gotcha” piece some real exposure.
The vetting better BE better than the Payton Prep Clouting paper trail magically appearing. Rauner, like “Jack!” and Blair Hull have no public records, or so Hull and “Jack!” thought.
Rauner has faced ZERO scrutiny. Trib won’t likely do it, Sun-Times only deals in innuendo, Bernie was bold-faced lied to, so maybe another group, maybe media franchise, maybe they take on Rauner’s 9-10 figure money.
We’ll see…
Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, May 6, 14 @ 10:44 am

She was worried he was going to hide assets?
Sorry after Blair Hull and Jack Ryan the bar is kind of high on shocking.
Think you might be surprised how many people claim the other is trying to hide assets in divorces of people with money.

Why not? It worked for Blagojevich. Twice. Republicans using Democratic play books during elections. Maybe my party has finally learned a few lessons.
Comment by Louis G. Atsaves Tuesday, May 6, 14 @ 10:50 am
There has been many folks here who have focused on each gubernatorial issue in Illinois over the past decade and then move onto the next issue without tying it together. Why should we tie Ryan and Blagojevich and Quinn together? Because unlike the folks here who parse and departmentalize every new problem out of Chicago or Springfield - voters don’t do that.
There is always an excuse for every misdeed, every scandal and every investigation. But there is really no excuse for the continuing saga of scandals, investigations and misdeeds like we’ve witnessed throughout the last three administrations.
Partisans can point at the difference in political parties. Journalists can tell you why each new issue is different from the last one. Yet, no one seems to be focusing on the parade here. A parade of misgovernment, maladministration, illegal activities and questionable ethics. We come to CapFax to parse and debate - voters don’t do that. All they’ve seen is an endless series of bad government.
Deja Vu. It is what has been missing on this blog. A sense, right or wrong, that voters polled this year demonstrate repeatedly. They hate this crap and after a decade of it - they want it to stop.
Sad how over the past decade no one has seemed to ask our power players how badly their politics and cynical leadership hasn’t restored public faith. Illinois government disrespects its citizens when it passes “temporary” income taxes the way it did. Our government leaders don’t restore confidence when they depend upon lame ducks to do their work. We haven’t had honest government for a long time because our state government leaders are afraid of telling citizens the truth and are afraid of losing the next election.
Deja Vu. You can say to everyone who likes this ad that these terrible situations are all different, but to Illinoisans - it just seems like the same bad horror story which needs to end.

Timing is everything. We have no clue what the docs may say, nor do any of us know if #1 is fine, not fine, and I remember Jeri Ryan was “fine” with everything until “everything” was out in the open.
“Jack!” Ryan was a lemming’s dream, until someone looked deeper and the ex-wife was asked the questions.
Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, May 6, 14 @ 10:52 am
Yeah - fine job consultants, etc. I’d do the same thing if I had no plans, no agenda, nothing. And it might work.
However, if Mr. Rauner wins, I’m pretty sure his time in office will be similar to current Gov. Paul LePage in Maine.
Comes in, thinks it’s just like his business, and fails miserably. All of this and LePage actually had government experience as a Mayor before becoming Governor.
Rauner lacks even this, and there has been nothing I’ve seen so far which suggests he has any concept of how to work with others in government.
Just remember, Bruce. The campaign is easy. Governing is hard.
Comment by low level Tuesday, May 6, 14 @ 10:55 am

Because, to paraphrase the Big Lebowski: new stuff has come to light the last few weeks.
Regarding the divorce, does Pat Quinn really want this campaign to start digging into 20-30 year old divorces and subsequent personal relationships? Answer: no, I doubt he would like what comes of that.
Comment by Anonymous Tuesday, May 6, 14 @ 11:18 am
I give it an A+. The Rauner campaign is wisely taking the “death by a thousand stabs” approach. It’s going to be a long summer/fall for Quinn & Co. I’m sure the Harold Washington ad resurrected at some point (which was a major missed opportunity by the incompetent Brady campaign).

Comment by Chicago Cynic Tuesday, May 6, 14 @ 11:18 am
A good ad, but I think it should appear on TV very soon. I would just like to know when SOMEONE will come out and demand to hear Bruce’s plans to maintain current programs, given the proposed reduction in revenue (taxes) that the Republicans are advocating. Will we EVER hear an actual PLAN from Rauner? My guess is NO.
Comment by Big Joe Tuesday, May 6, 14 @ 11:19 am
Again, this is a classic Rove tactic — take your opponent’s strongest attribute, the thing he’s proudest of and the thing he’s best known for, and shove a pitchfork through its chest. This achieves two goals simultaneously — it leaves your opponent crumpled and sobbing on the sidelines, and it draws public attention away from your own failure to offer a vision or a plan.
PQ needs to bring in someone who has a track record of beating back the Rove offense, and he needs to do it fast.
Comment by Soccermom Tuesday, May 6, 14 @ 11:28 am
Rauner will divulge plans when his opponent stays out of the headlines… The innauguration speech will be very interesting…

’splaining was what I meant (as in explaining).
Comment by Gator Tuesday, May 6, 14 @ 11:32 am
Wow, not sure what that is supposed to mean.
The Ryan divorce was sealed (it appears Rauners is not), unless I really missed something, they both went to court to keep it sealed (and failed)…
Even afterwards I don’t recall the ex being anti Jack in fact a quick google search reveals…
So I guess I am missing his ex wife having a beef with him….
Does anyone really think that the unions are everyone else didn’t look into this? Please, it is standard opo research at this point.
There is nothing there…
But if brings up the bigger point, no matter what is put up here about Rauner (rate the ad, etc) at some point it becomes about some Rauner potential negative, negative or a ‘where are the details’ rant.
It might just be easier if Rich put up a ‘What I don’t like about Rauner’ post everyday so some folks could just use that to get it out of their systems daily….
Comment by OneMan Tuesday, May 6, 14 @ 11:35 am

Everyone’s waiting for their papers!
Anyway, the ad might be effective if it didn’t look like crap and was on television. Right now Rauner’s most popular YouTube video has 54K views and it’s been up a year, so this Deja Vu ad is basically meaningless save for people reading this blog and journalists.

(Gasp) You know something? A “threat-like” retort will not stop an eager news guy from picking up on Rauner. We will see, but this Dopey idea, “Oh yeah, well, what about…” is not going to help Quinn or Rauner.
That’s why it’s called vetting, each on their own “records”
Rauner has had non-existed vetting by other candidates. That will change too.

Comment by Anonymous Tuesday, May 6, 14 @ 11:54 am
Shame! Shame! I rate this ad as a cowardly attempt to deflect attention from Rauner’s own involvement with Blago’s corrupt crony, Stuart Levine. That’s right, one candidate for governor actually profited financially from the corruption of the Blago years.
This ad is a dastardly example of why people are turned off to politics.
Comment by Snucka Tuesday, May 6, 14 @ 11:54 am
This video proves one thing, rahmner already owns the Illinois media. So what’s the need to run commercials, when the rahmner news is a rahmner comercial?

You made an observation, as did I, to the possible revelations of looking at divorce records. It is what it is I guess.

Would that be the candidate who propped up Blago as honest and trustworthy, despite knowing that wasn’t true, then road Blago’s coattails to become governor after the dust settled?
The ad works to keep control of the narrative that Pat Quinn isn’t the honest everyday man he’s branded himself as, but is another in the line of corrupt politicians. Gets an A.

Would not be surprised to see it on the air with a little polishing.
Comment by Arthur Andersen Tuesday, May 6, 14 @ 12:27 pm
This ad earns a B.
It is crisp, rapid, hard hitting and says focused on driving home one single message. A montage of many saying essentially the same single thing over… and over… and over… all in roughly 30 seconds. The only reason it is not an “A” is because I’m tired of negative ads after so many years.
Comment by Formerly Known As... Tuesday, May 6, 14 @ 12:37 pm
PQ has always kind of skated by on the image of a lovable rumpled bumpkin– poorly spoken but well meaning– a relatively harmless political doofus. His actual “record” is four plus years of accomplishing nothing to improve or fix the state after the Blago and Ryan years. And now here’s this scandal and federal investigation which is getting some press, and (at the very least) highlights his incompetence at the stewardship/ management/oversight of state funds.
The power of this Rauner ad is its simplicity and that it will be viewed by most casual watchers as a completely “fair hit” that Governor Quinn surprisingly brought on himself. It does not help Quinn that he has not been handling it very skillfully so far.

I know a Dopey idea that Bill Holland, arguably one of the most respected officials in all government handed the US Attorney a report. Simple. Nothing nefarious.
There is no connection. Get over it. It’s like you are ignorant of blatant facts.
Either make a case that the Chicago mayor is influencing a Federal Probe, started by a report by the Auditor General of Illinois, or figure out another Dopey conspiracy with no merit.
It’s not about me, and if you want to call out Holland and the US Attorney office, do it already.
To this Ad and all that ignorance,
Reporting on a sitting Governor, under the above circumstances is news, and a very powerful and impactful Ad. It’s well done, and lets the reality tell the story.
Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, May 6, 14 @ 1:26 pm
This could be a very effective ad if put up soon in a big way on statewide TV. Such a buy should mean little to the pocketbook of BR. Plus, if it ran enough now watch the PQ poll numbers drop and the panic set in with PQ’s campaign, his donors, and the DGA as they face the prospect of having to spend big so early to counter it. If they don’t effectively respond to it, then perhaps it could be a situation like JBT had when Rod’s early campaign blitz had already defined her by the time she went up.

I’ve never been a big fan of the spliced together news story ads and think they’re tough unless they’re used to reinforce one single point. Having said that:
1) The “buying votes” snippet jumps at you out of nowhere and is too obviously trying to “turn the tables.” I wouldn’t even go there.
2) I didn’t know he was once voted the most unpopular gov, but with my take regarding his overall image and the “un-popularity” of popularity contests, it doesn’t mean much.
3) While I get the “deja vu” premise: a) I’d imagine those who are innocent also would say they’d welcome an investigation, b)the choppiness seems to take it from Quinn to Blago way too quickly to make a valid argument or connection; and c) watching it a few times is irritating because of the “deja vu” snippets.
That last one is especially tricky in ads that annoy after a few viewings and it’d seem counterproductive if the sentiment is attributed to the ad itself instead of the opponent in a “strike ad.”
C- because it’s trying way too hard and it’s obvious. (Sorry.)

The production is a little rough, but it is a strong message.
The big difference, for those who asked, is:
1) Quinn is under investigation
2) third parties are questioning Quinn ethics and comparing to Rod.
To the divorce question: I read it. Some ultra conservatives may care, but they were probably already against him for being “pro abortion.”
If I were Quinn, I would be very careful about this dangerous game. You don’t want Rauner’s kids to come after you for coming after their mom, and no one is gonna believe you when you deny any responsibility.

Pfff. Big waste of money there. Nice try, but indeed, outright laughable. EVERYBODY who has lived in this State for more than a few years KNOWS all of the Reform Measures Pat Quinn has pushed for and passed in Illinois to help improve the ethical and transparent quality of this State–like no other Predecessor ever. AND, everybody who’s lived here ALSO knows darn well he is NOT, nor even remotely SIMilar to, those Wheeler ‘n Dealer types before him, George Ryan and especially Blago. And responsible inquiries into complicated matters worth looking into are hardly convictions.

You can’t have that both ways. Both men are as far removed from these cases as the other. It seems you think it is just fine if the abuse occurs in a public facility governed by Quinn, but seem to hold Rauner accountable because - what?
Because you are a Democrat and want to believe that cases of death, abuse and neglect in our public institutions is just a sad accident committed by the sweetest people governed by the best reformer ever elected Illinois governor, right?
Wrong. He has two investigations attempting to uncover what he was doing giving $54,000,000 of our tax dollars to his voting blocs a month before an election everyone thought he would lose. Then there is this deal with his patronage and hiring practices at IDOT being investigated.
Mr. Reformer looks like he needs a staff of lawyers to fumigate him, doesn’t it?
