* Bernie talked to Illinois Republican Party Chairman Tim Schneider…
Schneider said he hopes the party can pick up three or four House seats to end the Democrats’ veto-proof majority there. He said the climb is steeper in the Senate, where Democrats hold a 40-19 majority.
“Rome wasn’t built in a day,” Schneider said.
“What I truly believe is once the voters, and the people of Illinois, understand what a Republican-led administration can do,” he said, “we’ll see the transition of the House and the Senate to Republican leadership.”
* Bruce Rauner was even more optimistic…
Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner predicted a GOP majority in Illinois eight years from now during a campaign stop in Springfield Saturday afternoon. […]
“We’re going to rebuild our Republican party from the grassroots up in every county. We’re going to take seat after seat in the General Assembly, and eight years from today we’re going to be celebrating. We’re going to be the majority party,” Rauner told the crowd.
He later defended the statement as “very realistic.”
“Limited government, low taxes, individual liberty and personal responsibility. Many Democrats believe in that, independent voters believe in it and if we build the Republican party on that, that’s a unifying message,” he said.
A Republican governor during the next remap process would, indeed, be a huge development.

Measuring drapes, is a dangerous game to play.
How about winning one election, Bruce, then worry about the next 3 or 4.

once again, staff work–limited government isn’t what committeemen in Springfield are looking for. Springfield is a government town=more jobs, especially returning the ones that have migrated to Chicago over the past 10 years

Madigan seems to be more effective and powerful without a super-majority. You figure it out.

la times had a story this morning about how a lot of republican governors running in blue states are struggling in re-election bids despite positive momentum for the party in federal races this cycle. Let’s hold the re-election party talk until after we make it through the fall.

As a great philosopher once said, “before any debate it is important to define your terms”. The above statement means different things to different people.

It’s entirely possible that in the long run a Brady victory in 2010 would have been the best possible outcome for the Democrats. After all, the state’s economic condition would be no better under a Governor Brady, but would change the dynamics of arguing over why the state’s economy is in the shape it is in. While I don’t have clarvoyance about the next four years, the trends tell me they will be better than the last four economically, no matter what happens this November. In addition, who happend to be governor during the redistricting process did not make that much of a difference when it comes to who makes up our General Assembly. Gerrymandering is important, but somewhat overrated.

Limited government and lower taxes are great sound bites, but few actually want to live with the results. It’s pretty easy to lower taxes, but cutting services in a significant way has proven to be almost impossible.

By the General Assembly would be not much different, I say that because Madigan & Cullerton would have still had majorities even if Brady had been governor.

The natural progression of the so-called conservative model is no taxes at all, bringing us all the ultimate liberty of freedom from all government. But who’s voting for that??

Except that Brady would never have signed the “Clarke” Map…
Other than the ignorance of what the 2010 election meant to the GA Map…
Yikes.

Rauner can pretend that he “will get along with the Speaker just fine” if he wants. But when he talks about taking away the HDEM majority, that’s all that Madigan will hear.

A party organization built on nursing home blood money. What could possibly go wrong?

I’m not suggesting Brady would have signed would have signed onto the “Clarke” Map. What I’m saying is that he would have had to sign on to something & that people often overrate how big of a difference redistricting makes. A Gov/GA split would still have left us with a map that results in the GA would still today having solid Democratic majorities in both houses.

Based on? We wouldn’t know what a different map. If you personally know, play the lottery, because you are the only one who would know for sure.

What Schnorf said. I don’t think that the Sangamon GOP is all about that limited government and low taxes message.

Too bad Bruce will have to face a much better Democratic candidate in 2018. Can’t do much without a better map

You know, based on my experience with State employees, staff in Chicago always had to be given titles one or two levels higher just to be able to hire equivalent talent people. Moving them back to Springfield where the equivalent position could pay a bit less would actulaly help the pension problem a touch … lower salary = lower final average compensation = lower pension.

Before we debate what will happen in 2022, let’s first see if the GOP can pick up that 3-4 state House seats Schneider is talking about. I wonder if one of them he’s counting on is the Crespo seat where Schneider lives?

I posted this in the wrong thread:
The 2000 IL General Assembly map was not drawn by the Democrats and yet Democrats used that map to win solid majorities.
=== In the 2000 redistricting cycle, the Illinois legislature enacted congressional plans on May 31, 2001. It could not agree on a state legislative plan, however, and the process fell to a backup commission. That commission — with its ninth member appointed by drawing a name from a replica of Lincoln’s stovepipe hat — approved a state legislative plan on September 25, 2001. ===

Also too, unless a hypothetical Governor Rauner proposes to simply shut down Illinois government as a form of blackmail, just getting Democratic numbers below the veto-proof level doesn’t help much.

The way Madigan gerrymanders those figure 8 districts I would start with one.

Rich, it sure sounds to me like Rauner is already flip-flopping on his pledge to only serve one term.
Eight years from now? Will that be the Sanguinetti administration?
