* The Rauner campaign has taken the audio from Gov. Pat Quinn’s new TV ad and added its own, mocking video. Have a look

Gonna be a long and nasty one, campers.

  2. This is just stupid. What high school is he trying to be class president of?

Comment by Soccermom Thursday, Jul 31, 14 @ 2:24 pm

  3. Ouch…sure is the “Year of the Rochambeau”…and we are not talking the Revolutionary War General. Kindly delete if deemed offensive.

  4. Assuming it is just a web thing, kind of funny.

Comment by OneMan Thursday, Jul 31, 14 @ 2:28 pm

  5. That’s just weird and creepy.

It makes Team Rauner look far worse than Quinn.

Rauner needs to hire some adults to run his campaign. He’s made a series of bad moves since winning the primary and this is one more.

  6. I’ll just save you the trouble of taking down my comment

  7. This is the first time I actually feel bad for the guy dressed up as a character.

You want to mock, I love a good ironic mock, ask around, but to be paraded around like a prop for amusement…

I feel sorry for him. That ain’t working in politics, no matter what they tell you.

  8. Hilarious. I like Quinnochio’s “icky shuffle”

Comment by Anon Thursday, Jul 31, 14 @ 2:35 pm

  14. This guy reminds me of those tacky Statue of Liberty costumes worn by homeless guys in front of tax return offices in April. Cheap, ugly way to advertise in my opinion. This commercial comes off as cheap and tacky as well.

Comment by Wensicia Thursday, Jul 31, 14 @ 2:36 pm

  15. Childish. I guess having cartoon characters follow candidates is the big Republican trend now but it comes off as a immature prank.

Still, if Quinn is dumb enough to believe he should keep bragging about pension cuts in a state where government is the largest employer, then he deserves to lose.

Comment by Really? Thursday, Jul 31, 14 @ 2:37 pm

  16. Ouch.

    Comment by Bring Back Boone's Thursday, Jul 31, 14 @ 2:40 pm

  17. Pretty hilarious, and affective to take Quinn’s own ad and turn it against him. I disagree with negative comments. This is a very good ad.

Comment by Anon Thursday, Jul 31, 14 @ 2:44 pm

  18. Whatever they are paying Quinnochio isn’t enough. There isn’t a sum of money big enough to make me put on that costume and act like an idiot.

Comment by Stones Thursday, Jul 31, 14 @ 2:47 pm

  19. I very rarely comment on political ads. However… this is perhaps the most confusing, borderline creepy ad I have ever seen. One minute Rauner looks like he’s running a high-quality, professional campaign and the next he rolls out this BS.

In summary: Mr. Rauner wants to be Governor of one of our nation’s largest states and he is using a man dressed up as a clown, not only in his ads, but as his representative at public events. It is indeed going to be a ridiculous 96 days.

Comment by Snucka Thursday, Jul 31, 14 @ 2:49 pm

  20. waste of time. also, that guy playing the character, if you are an actor, have fun with that the rest of your career in the progressive theater community. and if you are just a politico, well, you are no Donald Segretti.

Comment by Amalia Thursday, Jul 31, 14 @ 2:50 pm

  21. Not every YouTube video is an Ad people…..

You ever think they just did this to troll the Quinn folks (and some of you) a bit…

Comment by OneMan Thursday, Jul 31, 14 @ 2:51 pm

  22. Come to think of it, “Quinnochio” has very likely made more public appearances and is more closely associated with Rauner’s campaign in the minds of voters than Evelyn Sanguinetti.

That is Mr. Rauner’s running mate, in case anyone needs a refresher.

Comment by Snucka Thursday, Jul 31, 14 @ 2:52 pm

  23. One Man,

That’s possible, but best not to make your side look bad in the process.

Comment by Gooner Thursday, Jul 31, 14 @ 2:52 pm

  24. Nope, not gonna bite…this man is unfit to be Guv running this adolescent campaign…I’m hoping the grown up campaign begins soon…

    Comment by LCP45 Thursday, Jul 31, 14 @ 2:52 pm

  25. OW, Your post reminded of the joke about the circus street sweeper complaining about having to clean up after the elephants. When it was suggested he quit his job he exclaims, “what, and leave show business?”.

I hope he gets compensated well. What some budding actors have to do to pay the bills. ooof

Comment by dupage dan Thursday, Jul 31, 14 @ 2:54 pm

  26. Pinocchio impersonator’s 15 seconds of fame.

If Raunervich wins, will this goof become director of the Illinois Film office?

Comment by Norseman Thursday, Jul 31, 14 @ 2:54 pm

  27. Ad helps Quinn. More coverage of Quinn’s message and face always helps this early in the campaign. Especially with those not paying close attention to it. The first some of them have heard Quinn’s his positive claims at all. The criticism is too indirect and quiet. I hope it gets played everywhere.

It’s fun. However using a goofy clown, with obviously faux home made signs, versus the “Voice of God” serious messages — make Rauner look foolish and amateurish by comparison. Which voice in this ad has most credibility?

It might help with his younger campaign staff morale. That’s it. First F in the campaign.

Bread and circuses may have suckered me in this time, but that does not mean either candidate will make for a good governor.

We are guessing since few watch as much as listen Flip Rauner could be giving PQ some free time for his spot. Or folks will think FLip is the mutt with the nose ….like the Stroger fisherman.

Comment by CircularFiringSquad Thursday, Jul 31, 14 @ 2:59 pm

  33. Cue the PQ team starting production on the Bruce Rauner clouting his New Trier daughter into Walter Payton College Prep. If you thought this hurt, wait until this. There’s no holding back now.

    TAKE ONE!

  34. Quinn will raise money off this. Also are Campaign Ads intellectual property of the consultants? If so do we have a copyright issue here?

Comment by Come one man! Thursday, Jul 31, 14 @ 3:00 pm

  35. One Man,

So they created a “thing” acknowledging that it would not convince anybody, and might serve to drive voters to the other side, with the hope that just the other side would see it, making them angry at the apparent incompetence of the Rauner?

    Perhaps to lower expectations?

One Man, do you really think the Rauner team is that devious?

Comment by Gooner Thursday, Jul 31, 14 @ 3:01 pm

  36. ===stuff like this is for the junkies===

Stuff like this is aimed directly at the Rauner haters on this blog. Why do you think I got it before everybody else? lol

Comment by Rich Miller Thursday, Jul 31, 14 @ 3:02 pm

  37. I watched it two more times, with and without sound;

I love a good mock, and words, and irony…the message, or what they are trying to, I guess, do, is fun, and delicious to make “right” what they see wrong…

The reality, however, for me has nothing to do with Rauner’s Campaign, or even their Crew in this video.

I feel really bad for the guy in the costume . Now - dupage dan -, that is rich irony, which probably is why I feel bad for a guy thinking he is “important” in that Crew.

    A shame.

Comment by Oswego Willy Thursday, Jul 31, 14 @ 3:04 pm

  38. I had to watch it again.

The timing of the edits and posters are great, and each scene perfectly undermines the story line the narrator is trying to spin. It makes you want to see what will happen next and holds your attention throughout. Did Simon the web ad guy switch teams?

If this campaign is a race to the bottom, at least we will go down laughing.

Comment by Formerly Known As... Thursday, Jul 31, 14 @ 3:04 pm

  39. So at what point did high school kids start running the Rauner campaign? An Ag plan that a 10th grader could have put together with Wikipedia and now this. Time to step up the conversation. Next he’ll have the Cellozzi-Ettleson guys coming out to say Vote for Bruce where he’ll always save you money.

Comment by DuPage Bard Thursday, Jul 31, 14 @ 3:05 pm

  40. ===do you really think the Rauner team is that devious? ===

    Yep.

It’s a YouTube ad. At most, a couple-tree thousand people will see it. And mostly those folks will be from here and from Rauner’s own email list.

Comment by Rich Miller Thursday, Jul 31, 14 @ 3:07 pm

  41. I agree with anon at 2:44. The average person seeing this video will eat it up, just as they did the Blago ads asking what JBT was thinking. If every voter visited CapitolFax, Rauner would be a no-hoper by now, but obviously they don’t. How many people even noticed that BR was holding the sledge/maul crosshanded? Or are aware of the nine mansions, or the fact that his hourly income exceeds the average yearly state pension? Quinn is on track to lose to someone who is simply Notquinn, and once again the voters will get what they deserve.

Comment by aufjunk Thursday, Jul 31, 14 @ 3:08 pm

  42. I hope the bar where this ad idea was hatched made a lot of money that night.

    Truly awful.

Comment by LincolnLounger Thursday, Jul 31, 14 @ 3:11 pm

  43. The ad itself may be intended to upset people who dislike Rauner. The fact remains that, even without the ad, “Quinnochio” is a highly visible aspect of the Rauner campaign. That should give voters a pretty good idea of how Rauner would behave as Governor.

Comment by Snucka Thursday, Jul 31, 14 @ 3:12 pm

  44. Funny and clever

  45. == Stuff like this is aimed directly at the Rauner haters on this blog. Why do you think I got it before everybody else? lol ==

The chutzpah behind that makes me like this even more.

He came here early on, went right to the Capfax community despite the criticisms leveled by many, bought ad space, and tried engaging on a civil level. For all we know, he may have dropped by for a Q and A or a few exchanges now and then, but the comments never let up. Now he tries something a little different.

Were Quinn viewed as a serious governor, or a person of gravitas, something like this would have left the Rauner camp looking like a bunch of kids playing grown-up. Instead, it hits a nerve because it is so painfully amusing and built around truth at its core.

This is beautiful in its brashness.

  46. –Stuff like this is aimed directly at the Rauner haters on this blog. Why do you think I got it before everybody else?–

That’s what I figured, that some in the Rauner crew are doing it to entertain themselves. It certainly doesn’t get you anything among undecideds.

If you can get paid to goof around, go for it. Not my money.

Comment by wordslinger Thursday, Jul 31, 14 @ 3:24 pm

  47. I look forward to seeing what clever way the Rauner folks come up with to insert Quinnochio into the nursing home spots Team Quinn is no doubt hard at work preparing. That should be quite jolly and “affective.” Raunerbots might want to start contemplating right now how much nursing homes is going to cut through all this early stuff and hit people in the most visceral way possible.

Comment by Willie Stark Thursday, Jul 31, 14 @ 3:25 pm

  48. I like them going all in with Quinnochio. If they paint Rauner as C Montgomery burns, this is turnabout.

It’s a parody of a work, which is allowable under fair use. If Quinn camp wants to waste money on a lawsuit he’s destined to lose, though, he’s free to do so…it would for sure be in line with how he’s governed

Comment by Anonymous Thursday, Jul 31, 14 @ 3:51 pm

  55. I laughed. But in no way did it impact my vote even though I am squarely undecided in this election. OW is right though, I also feel sorry for the kid wearing the long nose and short pants. Quinn is a mockable type but I am not sure that Rauner isn’t just a different type of doofus.

The importance of this can often be overlooked, but over the course of a long campaign should not be underestimated. I’m guessing this took all of an hour or so for some intern to put together in late July…easily worth it

Comment by Anonymous Thursday, Jul 31, 14 @ 3:55 pm

  57. Ah, mind games. That’s what sustains and entertains a young campaign staff. Especially when your campaign is so flush you have enough resources to let you take play time.

You get the under 40 crowd pushing it via twitter, Facebook, etc it’s free media… at truly the expense of Quinn. This one didn’t hit but one might. Worth repeated shots and the hiring of Jon Stewart IMHO.

Agreed, but it seems being old school and working on the basics…of winning, isn’t “cool”.

Comment by Oswego Willy Thursday, Jul 31, 14 @ 5:06 pm

  63. FKA, I yield to no one in my hatred of Bruce Rauner, But I have to say — this didn’t hit a nerve. I just thought it was dumb and childish.

It actually made me feel better. I used to worry that Rauner’s wealth advantage was going to overwhelm PQ. I don’t worry about that any more. Rauner seems more than happy to waste money left and right. So blow through it, Bruce baby. You’re helping the economy and you’re not doing anything that will hurt the Governor.

Incidentally — if I were in charge of a campaign and we were 96 days out, I’d fire any intern who wasted time and resources on something stupid like this. And I would double-fire anybody who actually sent it out to media.

“Kids, we are running a campaign for governor of one of the largest states in the nation. This election is going to directly affect the lives of 12.9 million people, and a $630 billion economy. If you can’t take that seriously, you don’t belong here.” That’s what I’d say, with a few profanities sprinkled throughout, while they were cleaning out their desks.

Comment by Soccermom Thursday, Jul 31, 14 @ 5:14 pm

  64. Sorry OW but old school republican methods need to adjust to 2014. BVC is not running a Brady or even an Edgar race and he shouldn’t. The guy can afford to have a staffer or two doing nothing but painting Quinn as a clown. It works in this day of tweets and likes. Short attention span theatre in the political world these days!
He still needs a solid traditional campaign but stuff like this shows he is not leaving any rock unturned… or thrown.

  65. ===Sorry OW but old school republican methods…===

    It’s not a GOP or a Dem thing, it’s a campaign thing.

They have the cash to blow, that is for sure.

  67. Yeah it’s silly and juvenile and was created for a limited distribution. But the speed with which it was conceived, made, and distributed to Rich (and put up on You Tube) impresses the heck out of me.
