What is Rauner’s deal? Is it a bit? There doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. Replace rauner now before he takes down the whole Republican Party!
Comment by William j Kelly Thursday, Aug 7, 14 @ 1:53 pm
Is that what they were doing when he was dancing outside of the bullying bill signing — getting b-roll for this?
Not worth it.

I hope they plan on having this dude roam the State Fairgrounds. That could make for some good video, especially on Governor’s Day
Comment by Anonymoiis Thursday, Aug 7, 14 @ 1:59 pm
If you are playing Quinnochio, and they are telling you, “your an important part of this campaign,” and you believe them…
You’re not in politics, your a prop in a political message.
The internet is forever.

Madigan as Geppetto huh…
Think Rauner is getting a little too cute with the Quinnochio bit.

The last one got a lot of hits, so it must work. I’m not a fan, but maybe because I feel our state’s situation isn’t funny.
Comment by VanillaMan Thursday, Aug 7, 14 @ 2:11 pm
OK… the first one was supposedly an “inside baseball” thing, just having some fun and tweaking the Governor’s supporters. Maybe silly, but understandable. They certainly have the money to play around if they like.
So if that’s all it was, why this second “Quinnochio” video? Is this really polling well among undecideds? Seems really weird to want your campaign to be tied so closely with a a literal clown based upon a children’s book.
Comment by Snucka Thursday, Aug 7, 14 @ 2:12 pm

This kid must be promised a nice government job, maybe servant at the Executive Mansion in Springfield.
I agree with OW, this kid is a pawn, and being manipulated by the older/higher campaign staff on Rauner. He probably puts down Field Organizer for Rauner Campaign on his Linkedin.

Dear Rauner Campaign,
You do remember how the Pinocchio story ends, right? A miracle happens in the last reel, and Pinocchio winds up winning the thing that he most wants….

Better.
Comment by Oswego Willy Thursday, Aug 7, 14 @ 2:31 pm
Here’s what I don’t get - the veiny legs, amiright? Is PQ known for his varicose-y, prominent leg veins, or is Quinnochio a vampire infected with Hep V?
Comment by Joe Bidenopolous Thursday, Aug 7, 14 @ 2:34 pm
The irony of this guy, “Quinnochio”, taking a shot at political patronage is pretty thick. Don’t tell me he’s not hoping to get a job outta this thing.

Can’t wait for the State Fair to start so we can get away from this for a while. Oh, wait, there’s still Governor’s Day, Democrat Day, Republican Day, and BS tossing contest.
What happened to the good’ole days when people ran around with their hair on fire?
Maybe if I burned one I would understand the humor, or message?
Comment by Sunshine Thursday, Aug 7, 14 @ 2:40 pm
Ok I get the political analysis why it’s bad, but dang stupid humor makes me laugh. I guess that’s why Quinn has provided years of enjoyment.
Comment by Empty Suit Thursday, Aug 7, 14 @ 2:40 pm
Strange and curious stunt coming from the campaign of a man running for Governor of any state. Decidedly creepy as well.
Comment by The Prince Thursday, Aug 7, 14 @ 2:41 pm
We have staff on both campaigns that have way way too much time on their hands.
Two more points:
1) Great one SoccerMom.
2) To the guy who plays Quinnocchio. Have you no self-respect? I know you’re young and looking for a job in the Raunervich administration, but I doubt if they put Quinnocchio in any senior level position. Looking like a goof is not something to write Mom about.
Comment by Norseman Thursday, Aug 7, 14 @ 2:50 pm
wow so sad and pathetic, I feel really bad for that guy now. hope Rauner is paying to relocate him and his family…. to the Cayman Islands.

Looks like the intro piece for a long series of ads.
I really don’t get it except for the already-committed-to-Rauner and campaign staff to maintain their humor and morale.
Been proven wrong before.
Comment by walker Thursday, Aug 7, 14 @ 3:02 pm
Steve Schnorf, is that what we call low-brow entertainment voters?
Comment by Norseman Thursday, Aug 7, 14 @ 3:04 pm
Snucka is right.
I can’t believe they tested this message.
I find all clowns sort of creepy, and I wouldn’t want one associated with my campaign.
This doesn’t seem to tie Creepy Long Nosed Clown to Quinn, as much as it does Rauner.
I’m not sure that’s the association that will help them.
Comment by Gooner Thursday, Aug 7, 14 @ 3:07 pm
Hey A Guy, that’s not you, is it?
Comment by Arthur Andersen Thursday, Aug 7, 14 @ 3:08 pm
Maybe it’s just me, but I would have thought Rauner’s campaign should be based on the theme that he has serious solutions for serious problems. Instead, all he does is these frivolous, insulting ads and stunts. Each one of these pushes hundreds of educated voters into Quinn’s camp, and misses an opportunity. Whatever’s he’s paying his media advisers is money wasted.
Comment by orzo Thursday, Aug 7, 14 @ 3:08 pm
Joe and Soccer Mom,
I had the same thought about the veins, and I assume many other True Blood fans thought the same thing.
So now we have “Creepy Long Nosed Vampire Infected With Serious Disease Clown.” Yeah, that’s the perfect spokesman for Rauner.

Well, you got a cartoon yesterday and a return volley today. Of course it’s ridiculous. And it’s hitting a lot of you right where you live. It’s possible this is only meant for you. I don’t know. Low brow, whatever, I did utter an audible laugh when the Madigan/Gepetto character appeared. Couldn’t help it. If Madigan sees this or saw it, my guess would be that he’d say, “if the puppet would do as I’m pulling his strings to do, he’d be in much better shape.”
It’s return fire, nothing more. This isn’t something to intelligently decide your vote on, but it’s funny in parts and does pound a bunch of themes culminating in….”he’s not just a bumbler, he’s a corrupt one.”
But I do think, this was a project for a bunch of Y’all.

With all of Rauner’s millions, I’d expect a video that’s more than clips of the governor speaking and waving, plus a whole lot of footage of a guy in a bad costume dancing around on a sidewalk. A high school film class could put that together, easy.
Comment by Commander Norton Thursday, Aug 7, 14 @ 3:26 pm
A guy: and I’m guessing this was a project for a bunch of Y’all.
The only impression it had on me was my wondering why they’re doing it, and whom they’re talking to.
We’ll see.
Comment by walker Thursday, Aug 7, 14 @ 3:34 pm
Walk, I’m nowhere close to the brain trust in this organization. The only guy I ever see is a coordinator in the county to get literature from. I’m working my precinct and GA districts and we’re carrying the Rauner lit while we’re at it. I don’t see anything before you do. I can analyze what they’re doing like the rest of us, and this looks like they’re poking a stick at their harshest critics. There are plenty of them here.
Comment by A guy... Thursday, Aug 7, 14 @ 3:40 pm
I don’t get the strategy behind these bits, from anyone. If you’re a serious candidate, do you really want to be associated with stuff like this?
Rauner’s taken a beating in the media for being a lightweight or dodger on policy. How does this help with that? How does it help push Undecideds?
The kids look like they’re having fun, and that’s fine with me. I just don’t understand the objective on August 7.

I’ve seen too many campaign ads to be outraged by something like this. It’s just silly and makes me wonder whether this is another multi-million dollar losing campaign. High-priced consultants and a zillion ads do not win elections. Ask California Governor Meg Whitman if you don’t beeline me.

I feel the same about Quinn’s Squeezy the Pension Python.

So here’s a question: Is there anybody — ANYBODY — who reads this blog who is undecided about who to vote for in the governor’s race?
This race is going to be much closer than Mr. Rauner expects. So go ahead — waste time focusing your energies on CapFax readers. Get a little frisson every time you make somebody resort to ALL CAPS!!! And then tell me what you have done to get to 50 plus one.
One of the smartest guys I know (yes, he’s a frequent commenter) once told me: “The only thing that will get you through a campaign is the knowledge that, on a date certain, it’s over. And every day, you have to wake up and do everything you can think of to help your guy win. And the next day, and the next day, until it’s all over. And every time you’re deciding what to do next, you ask yourself the question: Is this going to bring in new votes? If the answer is yes, do it. If it’s not, it’s a total waste of time.”
He said it a lot better. I wish I’d tape recorded it.
Comment by Soccermom Thursday, Aug 7, 14 @ 5:27 pm
There is no outrage on my part, but as somebody who fears the idea of a Governor Rauner even more than I dislike Pat Quinn, I hope they keep making these.
