* The New Prosperity Foundation, run by Ron Gidwitz and IMA honcho Greg Baise, is out with a couple new attack ads. The first we’ll listen to is a radio spot which mocks freshman Democrat Cheri Bustos for breaking a promise to give up ten percent of her congressional salary…
* The next radio ad claims that Brad Schneider is “one of the richest members of Congress” and blasts him for playing hide the ball with his tax returns…

Both demonstrate an ability to take an issue and blow it out of proportion by tying it to a Congressperson’s character and then telling us why someone with that character trait shouldn’t be respected.
The one against Bustos is especially damning because she did what everyone easily understands. She promised and then she broke that promise. Then she lied about it. As issues go, this one about her honesty is rough to overlook.
Schneider catches a break because most all listeners can’t identify with all the angles surrounding wealth and taxes. Since they are not tax lawyers, or know about the tax laws, they are dependent on the ad narrator. So Brad catches a break while Bustos catches hell.
Good ads. Schilling and Dold are lucky to get this kind of support from this outside group. Someone smells victory for both, it seems.

Gubinatorial candidates to stop playing “peek a boo” with their tax returns. after all summaries reflect a deceitful character, right?

That Bustos ad is running all over the place. I even heard it on an independent radio station that wasn’t Cumulus or Clear Channel.
Anyone have a poll result for the Bustos/Schilling race???

Er, goose/gander. I believe it was the Democrats who made the tax return an issue first. Turnabout is fair play, people in glass houses, etc. Right?

That’s the worst part. The goofy campaign explanation that she “misspoke.”
Sure, people might expect broken promises. But when it comes to saying you’ll give up some of your salary, that’s not a promise you want to break.

Disgusted to see Comrades Gidwitz and Baise waging Bolshevik class warfare against Schneider for his capitalist success.
Why give credence to the argument being used against Rauner? Schneider/Dold is small potatoes compared to the governor’s race. Seems penny-wise, pound-foolish.
What are Gidwitz and Baise’s interest in Congress, anyway? They’re not Washington players. What’s in it for them if a couple of GOP seats are added to the House majority?
Maybe Rauner has taken over everything else in the state GOP, and they need an arena where they can raise money to throw some work to their usual political apparatchiks?

The Bustos Campaign has been stumbling on this issue. Best move would be to pay the $34,000 and put an end to the issue since she promised to do so.

I really hate to use the word, “lie” - after all, we’re discussing politics and most of this stuff is subjective, not objective.
But when Demoralized and I agree… Cheri, you have sunk your own battleship and I don’t know how you will be able to recover. You got caught.
You just can’t claim to not be aware of this. You can’t make something a cornerstone of your congressional career in your first election win to Washington, then expect everyone to just forget it. You are on tape. You kept saying it.
You are so toast. If you get a pass on this from voters in November, you will be one of the luckiest liars elected that day.

Bustos said it multiple times about giving back 10% of her pay if she won. She went further and misled voters about “foregoing” her pay during the government shutdown. She just waited for her pay during those two weeks of the shutdown–she didn’t forego it. This woman is a communications major and was a highly paid PR professional. She knows what her words mean.
