“will appear to answer questions about their platforms”…classic double entendre, thanks for the LOL.
It’s all about the appearance, isn’t it?

This is the best live streaming I’ve ever seen. Really enjoyed the 45 seconds of the woman with insane green-screened graphic behind here.

Hey Brooke: Could you at least pretend as if you’re paying attention to the debate in which your candidate in engaged? Good grief, put the macbook and iPhone down for an hour.

The woman behind Rauner seems very bored. She’s tweeting and checking her email.
Comment by Toure's Latte Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 10:25 am
Quinn is certainly the better demagogue.
Comment by Meanderthal Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 10:25 am
To be fair, the woman in the gray dress behind Quinn with the laptop is doing the same thing. The Trib couldn’t check their framing?
Comment by Toure's Latte Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 10:26 am
And what’s with the book in the bookcase behind/between the candidates - the black one with the swastika on the spine, which comes into focus whenever they zoom in on Bruce? Maybe the Trib can find another home for that little monster.

Rauner said that he did a “phenomenal job” in managing defined pensions. Now he wants to end them. Hopefully the hypocrisy will drill itself into the thicker heads among us.
Rauner said in 2011 that public unions are like tumors because of their “excessive” pensions. Didn’t he have the TRS fund at the time? Who’s he calling a tumor? He managed defined pensions for years and now craps on the workers who earned them because it benefits him.

I love when Bruce Rauner tells the Editorial Board to “pay attention”, “this is important” …
Teaching? lol

Anyone have a clue as to what Rauner’s talking about “borrowing” to balance the budget?

In defense of Brooke and the girl behind Rauner, They’re press people so responding to emails and tweeting is literally part of their job description. They’re also not hearing anything they don’t already know so I don’t blame them for getting some work done…

“Taking pensions away from people isn’t reform” — Bruce Rauner
What a difference a looming general election makes!

== Rauner says “morally wrong” to change pension benefits for those already retired. Rauner has yet to detail his pension reform plan. ==
Got to agree with Rauner on that. At the time, however, Rauner opposed the Madigan-Quinn plan because it didn’t go far enough.

Bruce has turned 180 degrees and is now saying his plan is to change the pension benefits only for future workers - not current workers or retirees. Unreal.
My understanding is that the $100 billion in unfunded liability relates to ALREADY ACCRUED liability. So, any funding plan that focuses only on future workers will DO NOTHING to change that unfunded liability. So, as to what is arguably the state’s greatest fiscal challenge, Bruce now appears to have no plan.
Comment by Raymond Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 11:21 am
Evelyn is not prepared to step in to run the 5th largest state in America, her performance, or being “shh”ed really reinforced that.
BTW, if I want to know a height of a candidate, Slip and Sue and make that a criteria of worthiness, I’ll read Mike Frerichs’ twitter feed.
Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 11:26 am
Rauner was impressive. A man with a plan. Well done.
Quinn needs an opponent who scares independent suburban voters on the social issues and Rauner is very much acceptable to suburban independents.

And who do we think Brook winked at at the end …. clueless.
Comment by InsiderOutsider Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 11:26 am
Rauner said he’s not going to take a salary and pension as governor.
He wants to put other workers on 401(k) style pensions, which have proved to be risky. Someone in my family said she lost $25,000 in the Great Recession and has yet to recover it.
I hope voters realize how insulting it is for a multimillionaire who made s***loads of money off of pensions to say he won’t take a pension or salary, when others utterly rely on salaries and pensions.

If either man “won” that debate, it was Quinn. He did a good job of filling the time with Rauner’s income taxes, failed companies, etc. For the first time in this campaign, I’m impressed. Quinn has a history of overseeing dysfunctional campaigns but being a great closer. We might be seeing that here.
Comment by Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 11:32 am
It would have been interesting to hear Rauner explain how he could get legislative Republicans to go along with his plans to extend the income tax, extend service taxes, etc. … especially after the Quinn accusation about trying to tube pension reform by offering campaign contributions. And, if he does get elected and can’t get those things passed because GOPs won’t support it he can always blame the Democrats … and Obamacare.
Comment by Great Caesar's Ghost Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 11:40 am
I lost feed in and out at the end. Can somebody tell me the question that Rauner answered , I’m not prepared to answer that yet. What was question and who asked it? It was near the end and the moderator seemed to raise her voice at him.
Comment by Leprechaun Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 11:41 am
Illinois is the loser in this “debate”. Quinn is still a bumbling name caller and he has the incredible gall to call his budget “balanced”. To me that is just unbelievable. Rauner, as described earlier “is a man with a plan”, unfortunately it is a plan that has been tested before and it has not been very successful if not a failure. It is good to know that he has an authoritative, if not diminutive, attorney and community leader on his team. I wouldn’t go with her hair stylist but she might help Rauner look like a statesman? Just bad all the way around. I did think Vallas came off as somewhat intelligent. His body of work leaves something to be desired but he might be the best potential governor of the four.

When Mitt put his Dodge City hat on with the Illiana question we think the Tribbies just canceled their contract to be Mitt’s in house newsletter.
Slip&Sue’s dress code moment was defining for this rodeo. Too bad she did not talk about the fight she and BroomHilda Ives plan to mount to repeal Marriage Equality.
Funny Mitt’s blow back squad more worried about Blagoof comments…too late Mitt we are focused on the future.

Add a new name to the list of people Quinn has thrown under the bus: Leader Durkin. And then Quinn had the nerve to re-throw under the bus 2 of his stalwart supporters in the IDOT hiring scandal: Lavin and Schneider. Way to go, Pat. Glad to see that you know the meaning of the word loyalty.
Comment by Chicago Publius Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 11:46 am
Bruce Rauner was specifically asked about his plan(s).
Bruce stated he is successful because he plans, sticks to his plans…
…and won’t give any plan, other than outlines of ideas that can’t be budgeted through to seem posdible.
Voting for Bruce Rauner is voting for the premise that Bruce is a planner, is a successful planner, but won’t give you that plan that works out in the governing financials.
Food for thought…
Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 11:49 am
Rauner did a 180 on his original promise to have “no tax increase”. He now has done a 180 on pensions.
Maybe reality is catching up to some of the simple-minded ideology of his political allies. (I still hold out the hope that he is not as stupid as some of his fellow travelers.)
When will he Rauner do a 180 on his promise to “increase funding to education?” Or his promise to “freeze your property tax?”
When reality catches up to them after he’s elected?
