New Quinn TV ad lampoons Rauner’s van

Posted in:

* Have a look

…Adding… Script…

Bruce Rauner: “Had this thing twenty years”

Voiceover: So what’s Billionaire Bruce Rauner been up to for the last 20 years?

He raked in millions outsourcing jobs to China and Mexico.

He stashed millions in the Cayman Islands, perhaps to avoid paying U.S. taxes

Now we find out he spent $140,000 to join an elite wine club.

Does all that wine fit in the van?

So the next time Bruce Rauner tells you he’s just a regular guy…

maybe, not so much.

  1. I think the wine club distracts from the real issue to paint Rauner as an immoral, corrupt person. I don’t think an unbelievably expensive wine club is immoral. But I certainly think specializing in outsourcing jobs and skirting taxes is. C-

  2. Love the idea and van imagery. Hate the continued “he’s a rich guy” meme. C.

  3. Class Warfare, keep it up Quinnsters. 55 days to go!

Comment by Wally Wednesday, Sep 10, 14 @ 1:02 pm

  4. The question “does all that wine fit in the van?” doesn’t make sense with the rest of the ad. I doubt most regular voters have heard about the wine story. I don’t think they connected the van with the “out of touch” message strongly enough.

Comment by Illinoise Wednesday, Sep 10, 14 @ 1:05 pm

  5. It’s a good ad. A

  6. C.

Tired of the van and watch, tired of the lawn mower and “water instead of ice tea” at restaurants, tired of the pandering.

  7. Nice response to the Raunervich ad. The wine line came off better than the calculus baloney they used in the press release.

Comment by Norseman Wednesday, Sep 10, 14 @ 1:10 pm

  8. The juxtaposition of the van and his other actions are good, the focus on outsourcing is great, caymans ok, wine club maybe a waste. Trade out the wine club for a piece on his nursing homes and it would’ve been a winner.

Comment by Chi Wednesday, Sep 10, 14 @ 1:11 pm

  9. The phrase “class warfare” is like Tourette’s syndrome in some circles. Just a meaningless, uncontrollable tic.

Rauner put the van out there. It was a dumb thing to do — it’s one phony regular-guy thing too many and condescending to those who actually have to drive POS wheels to get by.

It’s not “claas warfare” to capitalize on your opponents stupid moves.

Comment by wordslinger Wednesday, Sep 10, 14 @ 1:12 pm

  10. ===Trade out the wine club for a piece on his nursing homes and it would’ve been a winner. ===

It would’ve been a totally different ad. They were going for light here. You don’t make light of allegedly killing grandma.

  11. D+

Blown opportunity - why is the Quinn campaign talking about wine fitting in a van, when it should be spending that space on seniors neglected and suffering in a nursing home, etc., while Rauner is cashing out his millions, flying to the ranch, and shooting doves?

My God, these Quinn people are like the Bad News Bears - they’ve got big hearts and they’re trying really hard, but they just can’t get it together.

Comment by Raymond Wednesday, Sep 10, 14 @ 1:17 pm

  12. Saw Rich’s point after I posted.

Point well taken, but I don’t know that the Quinn people have the luxury of going light. It’s past time to get down to business, at least in my view.

Comment by Raymond Wednesday, Sep 10, 14 @ 1:18 pm

  13. === should be spending that space on seniors neglected and suffering in a nursing home, etc.,===

Two months to go. You don’t use your best stuff up front.

  14. == You don’t make light of allegedly killing grandma ==

    Sound advice.

And perhaps I was a bit too hard in my comments. As a light hearted piece, it’s decent. And even though the “Does all that wine fit in the van?” line makes no sense, it fits with the general tone of the ad. Upping my grade to a B.

Comment by Formerly Known As... Wednesday, Sep 10, 14 @ 1:21 pm

  15. Not to shabby. I’ll give it a B. Illustrating Rauner as the walking contradiction he is gets to the point.

Comment by Jorge Wednesday, Sep 10, 14 @ 1:21 pm

  16. Coming Soon - Rauner ad - “whats Quinn been up to past 20 years:
    1. Not solving Pension Crisis 5 years
    2. NRI and IDOT scandals 5 years
    3. Blind eye as Lt. Gov 5 to 10 years ago
    4. Running for office and general Gad Fly 10 to 20 years ago

Comment by Bogart Wednesday, Sep 10, 14 @ 1:24 pm

  17. If Quinn wins with the “I’m more ordinary than my opponent” campaign, what will he see as his mandate from the voters?

Comment by Downstate Wednesday, Sep 10, 14 @ 1:28 pm

  18. Solid ad.

Next, Quinn’s people should go all the way and do a parody of “Stars, they’re just like us!” with Rauner. Find a photo of Rauner taking out the garbage, making dinner, buying coffee…

Comment by From the 'Dale to HP Wednesday, Sep 10, 14 @ 1:32 pm

  19. I could see Quinn’s team using “maybe, not so much” as the recurring theme in a whole series of ads exposing Bruce.

  20. Pathetic.
    Please tell us something new.

  21. OK piece. Get past the ‘rich guy’ stuff. Show the video flip-flops (min wage,SSM, etc), CTBA review that the numbers do not add, and nursing home suits.

Comment by zatoichi Wednesday, Sep 10, 14 @ 1:45 pm

  22. This stuff might seem “old” to us, but it is not to the voters. The timing is right. The message, while not especially strong, adds to the story. The better stuff is for later.

  23. I’m going to guess this campaign is going to get ugly. Many aren’t feeling Rauner and many others aren’t feeling the Guv. How much mud is going to get thrown around before election day between those two gents.

Comment by Levois Wednesday, Sep 10, 14 @ 2:27 pm

  24. Decent ad. And please stop the whining about “class warfare”. Rauner started the war with his attacks on and scapegoating of unions. Also, the nursing home stuff doesn’t seem to connect with voters (though it really should), so I don’t think it’s a good alternative focus for the ad. B.

Comment by Eugene Wednesday, Sep 10, 14 @ 2:29 pm

  25. Any info on how much Team Quinn is paying for this ad? Also, are they only paying for TV ads in the Chicago market?

Comment by Mike Wednesday, Sep 10, 14 @ 2:34 pm

  26. @wally

How can you tell who the winners are in your exciting imaginary “class warfare”?

Comment by Del Clinkton Wednesday, Sep 10, 14 @ 2:36 pm

  27. Nursing home workers make less than workers at “Wally World”.

Comment by Del Clinkton Wednesday, Sep 10, 14 @ 2:39 pm

  28. This one’s just kind of dumb in a juvenile kind of way. Hard to imagine even the PQ supporters like it. A rare grade of “fail”.

  29. === How can you tell who the winners are in your exciting imaginary “class warfare”? ===

The increasing income disparity for one!

Comment by Norseman Wednesday, Sep 10, 14 @ 3:00 pm

  30. Not much punch to this ad. It tries to be cute, but a smile in response isn’t worth the cost of the ad. This is an ad that is for insiders like the ones on this blog, not Everyday people.

Comment by Tom Joad Wednesday, Sep 10, 14 @ 3:22 pm

  31. Rauner walked right into that. How did be expect Quinn to respond to that van?

Team Rauner needs to realize they are not up against Brady and Dillard anymore. If they their little gimmicks, Quinn is going to pound them for it.

Comment by Gooner Wednesday, Sep 10, 14 @ 3:34 pm

  32. I’m surprised they didn’t go with the $100,000 parking space. I think that’s the real contrast here: Rauner wants voters to think he’ll be frugal with state funds, but do you really trust a guy who spends $100,000 to park a twenty year old van to make frugal decisions with your money?

I get that in real life the parking space was an investment, but I don’t think that regular voters see it that way.

But it was good to include the outsourcing to connect the van to the issues.

Comment by VM Wednesday, Sep 10, 14 @ 4:00 pm

  33. I thought the wine thing was very good, and to the general public, self-explanatory-I mean $140,000 for wine-Joe Redneck doesn’t have to know all of the details to compare that figure to the $14 dollar bottle of wine he buys for a special occasion, or the Keystone Light at $14/30 pack…(Beer $ source, Walmart-last night). I think the ad was cute-give it a B+

  34. ===Beer $ source, Walmart-last night===

    Funniest footnote of the month!

Comment by Rich Miller Wednesday, Sep 10, 14 @ 4:18 pm

  35. Tone is good, message light and crisp (like Keystone), and is consistent with what I’ve argued is the main challenge of the Quinn campaign — they have to define him as more than “rich.” It has to be “bad rich” or “corrupt rich” in the way he earned his money. In this case, it reveals him as a phony trying to hide his wealth. It’s getting into the neighborhood here about what kind of man Rauner is, which is key. B+/A-

Comment by ChinaTown Wednesday, Sep 10, 14 @ 5:31 pm

  36. I have to admit this made me laugh a bit. Don’t know what it does to capture undecided voters or shore up the base, though.
    Give it a B.

Comment by Arthur Andersen Wednesday, Sep 10, 14 @ 8:37 pm

  37. Obama succeeded in painting Romney as an out touch rich guy who didn’t care about normal people. Quinn is gaining with the same strategy on Rauner. Rauner’s ad with the bus was pandering at its worst. Quinn’s response was funny, which is good. Voters like a sense of humor.

Comment by Mad County Wednesday, Sep 10, 14 @ 11:06 pm

  38. A great ad!
