Warner is sorry as heck, how about his friend Don Udstuen from Metra’s board? I haven’t heard anything about that business since he resigned and was convicted. He was accused and convicted of receiving kickbacks to secure Metra contracts, (among other things I guess). Will this investigation shed some light on how a board member can get contracts directed to friends? It makes you wonder if the people sitting on all those boards are simply committing their time out of public mindedness. And, what about the people inside the agencies who go along with it?

I remember how quickly all the politicos (Dem & GOP) and the media dismissed Quinn’s charges in 94 even though he had people (auto body shop owner/car dealer that Ryan’s folks had hassled for contributiosn) coming forward and some circumstantial evidence. Had we only listened. Quinn’s integrity amkes me look forward to the day Rod wins the elections, gets indicted an dwe have a Gov. Quinn. I give it 12 - 18 months.

Kass’ column describes a supposed washroom encounter between an unnamed reporter and Big Jim and Ryan in which Ryan didn’t appear contrite or distressed at all. Wonder if he believes that he will get to stay out (and keep his luxurious taxpayer-supplied pension) pending appeal. Wonder if he’s delusional. Or wonder if he’s right. Wonder if the fix is in somewhere. It is Illinois, after all.

Now, the next question is, will the Feds (Patrick Fitzgerald & his Untouchables) start to go after the others that (like Larry Warner) also got their hands “dirty” by shaking hands with George Ryan? They nailed George Ryan, but do they now start working “DOWN” from the top of the food chain to get at the other crooks that profited off of their friendship with George Ryan? These other lower level political/business crooks helped George become “the crook that he is/was”. Will the Feds just give these other lower ranking low lifes a “free pass” because the Feds already managed to get the head of the food chain?
The federal judge seemed awfully kind and forgiving to Larry Warner based on what he ripped the Illinois taxpayers off for. It seemed as if she felt old crooks in Illinois should be given a senior citizen discount on federal sentencing guidelines. Perhaps this is simply because the federal judges are seldom personally impacted by these crooks and when they don’t have to live in the “real world” like the rest of us, they lose touch with what the rest of society has to put up with? George and Larry both got handled with “kid gloves” and loving care when they were handed their sentences. They both should have been led from the Federal Building in handcuffs to the Cook County jail until they were assigned a federal prison. It appears that “Rank, does indeed, have it’s privileges.”

Yeah, Kass has lost all credibility.
It appears that some of the problems among Ryan’s “friends” is due to addiction. I guess you just never can tell.

Kass was writing about Daley’s corruption at a time when the Trib and Sun-Times coddled Daley. They still do, but to a lesser extent. After Hired Truck, the hiring scandals, and numerous other kinky deals, Kass was proven to be right all along.
As for Ryan has the man ever expressed a moment of true contrition for all the garbage that went on in the Sec of State and Governor’s offices? No “I’m sorry” for appointing his good buddy Dean Bauer as inspector general in order to cut off any investigations that may hurt Ryan?

I agree with Tom. That was some “non-apology” apology. Ryan is only sorry that he got caught. He is not sorry for his crimes.
