* Rauner hasn’t wanted many debates, so no surprise here…
Republican Bruce Rauner’s campaign said Wednesday that the candidate for governor would not accept an invitation from The State Journal-Register and WICS-TV Channel 20 for a live debate in Springfield with Gov. Pat Quinn.
Quinn’s campaign had said last week that the Democratic governor would participate if Rauner agreed to take part.
* No way were the firefighters gonna sit this one out or be with Rauner…
Gov. Pat Quinn [this week] visited a downtown fire station to receive the endorsement of the Associated Fire Fighters of Illinois, which has 15,000 members across the state, including 5,000 in Chicago.
Union President Pat Devaney said it was an “easy” choice between Quinn and Rauner, saying it’s clear the Democratic governor would fight for working people while Rauner takes stances that would hurt them, such as previous statements that he would support eliminating the minimum wage.
* The only surprise about this is that the state police commanders had never endorsed in a governor’s race before…
Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner announced today that he received the endorsement of the Illinois State Police Command Officers Association (ISPCOA).
“I have tremendous admiration for every member of our state police force. They are heroes who are willing to risk their safety for all of us, and they deserve the best in return,” Rauner said. “I’m humbled and grateful to have the support of the State Police’s top leaders with the endorsement of Illinois’ Police Command Officers.”
“Our Association strongly supports your effort to establish term limits for elected leaders in our state and sincerely appreciates your support of law enforcement and public safety,” ISCPOA President James Alexander wrote in the endorsement letter. “We enthusiastically support your candidacy.”

State workers, be they in a Union or not, take heed;
Bruce Rauner doesn’t like you.

Anyone think for a second, Rauner wants to be on a stage in Springfield, with this quote and many other quotes that paint Springfield poorly.

If the polling continues to go the way it is going today, maybe he should rethink the debates. He is clearly a better debater. Could be another regret if he loses.

In the debates, he will be questioned about all the things he claims he will do but has not proved he has a plan to pay for. Where is Rauner’s plan? The TV ads allow him to say whatever he wants without counter but will media allow him to do that in the debates?

Rats. I was hoping Rauner would participate in that debate so we could hear the latest way that his kid got into Walter Payton, and maybe see the debut of a fourth position on the minimum wage.

Jeanne should be a third party candidate since she has not come out for Rauner. Maybe Willy can choose her as his LG for the write in campaign. Unlike Evelyn Sanguinetti, Jeanne does have Springfield experience.

Quinn made a huge mistake not attending the funerals of the Troopers killed in the line of duty. Then a few days later he attends the memorial service for a film critic in Chicago.
If I posted the comments I heard following his “no show” I would be banned by Rich for life.
I doubt you will see very few active or retired State Police voting for Quinn. He certainly has lost my vote.

OW, you might want to cool it on your interpretation of Rauner’s CMS hate as a blanket condemnation of public sector workers. Ask the rank and file at any other state agency of their opinion of CMS, and I’ll bet you won’t find a lot of love, and a lot of resentment at bureaucratic meddling in their affairs. Just sayin’. It wasn’t always this way.

I’m amused by the endorsement of the Illinois State Police Command Officers Association. They talk about budget cuts being a problem, yet they expect Raunervich to fund new classes of cadets as he expands education, natural resource and infrastructure funding while maintaining low taxation. Referencing the term limit position is a joke because it means nothing in the reality of Illinois today. I understand the anger of management in having to deal with the incompetent Quinn administration, but this endorsement strikes me as the proverbial cutting your nose off to spite your face.

Unbelievable. You’re running for gov. and you pass on a debate sponsored by the SJR in Springfield?
How is that possible? It’s a given that you do that.
Is that:
A. Fear
B. A diss on Springfield
C. Stupid
D. All of the above.
Those are the only options. Rauner’s cheez-whiz kids are starting to show that they really don’t get Illinois.

Upon further review, I think it’s obvious that Rauner doesn’t want to face a Springfield panel that knows state government inside and out.
You can b.s. a lot of Chicago reporters, especially TV reporters, with snake-oil talking points, but that won’t fly in Springfield.
He’d be exposed. He’s not very good off-script.
It’s still, also, stupid and a diss on Springfield.
Plus, that smart-alec Bernie might be there. He has a nasty habit of keeping track of Rauner’s various fictions.

The only thing obvious is who would likely be moderating that debate, who has clearly been tilted towards Quinn in his reporting, so it’s not shocking they said no.

Ya lie…lie to the political reporter of the state capital’s newspaper and you question the debate?
You are running for governor and you can’t debate in the city where the work us going to get done with the Legislature…

Norseman. Nothing amusing about this endorsement. ISPCOA decided enough was enough of the Quinn administrations nonsense. He cancelled two incoming cadet classes claiming it was not in the FY15 budget. Then he miraculously found money to fund a class after addressing the State FOP Convention. Nice job after veterans and police officers quit their jobs to attend the academy only to be told it wasn’t happening. Classic Quinn. He also informed the FOP that as he had proudly signed legislation allowing veterans to bypass academic rules for applying to the State Police. Amusing. The ISPCOA initiated that legislation and pushed it for years only to have it placed on the back burner with no assistance from Quinn. New replacement squad cars for Troopers sat in the Radio lab parking lot for months because they had not replaced installers who retired or left. Mice ate through the wiring. The ISPCOA decided to take a bold stand. I salute them.

Rauner did better in a face off with Quinn than most imagined he would in this week’s Tribune meeting.
So, can we just stop the “Rauner can’t debate Quinn because he is too shallow and stupid” meme?
When expectations are lowered with this kind of over the top mocking and belittling, you just make it a whole lot easier for these slandered souls to prove you wrong in front of everyone.
Let Rauner set his own hurdle. Stop lowering it.

Quinn has killed himself with the Troopers, not replacing troopers that leave/retire and his choice to head up the state police have left him very unpopular there so this is no surprise. Rauner has been pretty popular with them since his campaign started, he employs a number of troopers (when they are off duty) to provide security while on the campaign trail.

Who made you the same Sling? There are plenty of good reasons that go beyond “who’s afraid of who” here. To suspect Rauner is afraid of the great Orator Pat Quinn is preposterous. He did fine in the Trib interview with him (Quinn did not) and he still fine with the hostile audience moderated by the completely bias Cinda Klicka and the teacher’s union. And somehow Bernie is now the Tim Russert of Springfield? I don’t think the ferocious Springfield press is the issue either. When you make these decisions, you evaluate the potential for what good or bad they have, and then look at where else you might be or what else you might be doing instead and make the same evaluation. Maybe the forum is better for Quinn that for Rauner. Whatever. I’m sure there’s a lot more going into this than what’s being discussed here. If you want to watch debates and read up on both or either of these guys, you won’t get cheated.

It isn’t monitoring.
It is good advice.
We saw it in the 2000 presidential debates.
The more a candidate is dismissed as a lightweight, or a shallow fool, the easier it is for that dismissed candidate to exceed the expectations set.
Rauner set up his own hurtles. If you make a claim that he is incapable of clearing them, and he doesn’t - it isn’t news anymore. You let him fall upon his own set standards.
The Dick Durbin thing. You look down at him splayed across the track and publically pity him as incapable of doing the job.
That is always more effective.
I’m not telling you to stop going after Rauner, but I am telling you that if you want him to fail you don’t help him out by lowering expectations of well he would do.
He won that debate this week. He was still full of it, but he beat the low expectations his critics had been claiming. Quinn, as governor, didn’t meet the higher expectations we have of an incumbent, and that was one of the reasons he looked like a loser.
If you think you can mock Rauner into making a mistake by exposing himself as a fraud - he hasn’t fallen for it yet, and it looks like he has had a plan all along. He already knows what he is going to do next month and what he is going to say.
He won’t let a voluntary debate throw his plans off at this point, in my opinion.

A Jack. It may be difficult for you to understand but this is all about Respect and Leadership. Neither has come from this administration. Quinn has never been a supporter. He panders to Law Enforcement when he thinks it will benefit him.

Just to be mentioned in the same sentence is an honor Sling.
I’ve never told you to quit writing anything. So, it’s not my “gig”. I have implored you to improve your diplomacy skills to the level of your intellectual writing capability. Even if that’s not to be, you’re still worth reading. There are hundreds of comments on here daily (kudos to Miller and his merry band of Poli-nuts)Can’t read them all. Wish I didn’t read half of them. I don’t think VM was being a Hall Monitor any more than you are when you demand ‘googling’ etc.

proudstatetrooper, in talking about respect I don’t know if you’re referring to something specific to your agency. In my view, there has been little respect shown by a governor to public sector workers since 2003. Leadership, or lack thereof, is a given. We all know that Quinn is no leader.
I just don’t see what you appear to see to justify an endorsement of Raunervich. His rhetoric to date clearly indicate that there will be even less respect for public sector employees than that shown by the Blago/Quinn administrations. As for leadership, where have you seen a coherent policy that demonstrates real leadership. If he shows leadership, the type of leadership we’ll see is him leading the charge to further diminish the quality of State government. State police will also experience this adverse impact.

Why doesn’t Quinn accept the Debate and go up against Grimm(assuming the paper would accept it) I think the more Grimm is exposed to central and southern Illinois the more it would help Quinn, even if he “loses” the debate. Plus you get all the headlines of a governor debate with no Rauner.

@Person 8, that is a great idea. It would definitely push Rauner into reacting.
I feel though that Quinn would not go for that idea because it would give the Libertarian Party a presence that both parties are afraid of.
