The Mike Bost for Congress campaign released its latest ad “Standing Up” today. In the 30 second spot, Bost highlights the reasons he’s running for Congress and why do-nothing politicians, like Bill Enyart and President Obama, have neglected Southern Illinois families.
“This ad reinforces that Mike Bost is a leader who isn’t afraid of straight talk,” said Bost Campaign spokesman Jim Forbes. “In Springfield he stood up against Pat Quinn and in Washington he’ll stand up against Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi and other liberal Democrats.”
The ad highlights Bost’s famous stand against Chicago politicians on the floor of the State House and the frustration he feels over Obamacare, EPA regulations and the economy. It will air district-wide beginning today.
Actually, the ad doesn’t “highlight” the rant at all. It merely has Bost showing the ad (without audio) on a laptop screen for a second or two, before closing the computer.
Bost smiles gently, and is cool, calm and collected throughout the ad. So, all the screaming from the right the other day about how the Democratic ad would backfire may not have been accurate. If the rant was helpful, Bost’s campaign would’ve used the actual audio and video.

Unwatchable. If Mike Bost isn’t throwing papers around during a tantrum what’s the point?

Funny, Bost doesn’t seem angry. That other dude on the computer — now he was angry.
Hilarious how he shuts the lid so quickly.
Other than that, pretty straightforward with the usual talking points. C.

I think Bost should have warmed it up by saying he was fighting for his constituents then and will fight for his you in Washington.

It’s a pass, but not a great one. If there’s local intel saying people have seen enough of the outburst, it’s a safe good ad.

I think it works. The ad does not have to have the audio to “highlight” the rant. Everyone gets the message and I think it is one that will work. I give it a B.

The ad is ok, not bad but not great either. He could have done a lot better job and actually made the DCCC ad work for him. Not sure this quite does that.

There’s such an edge of anger/rage in his voice, even when he’s trying to speak calmly. It’s potent; it appeals to some, certainly. I just wonder, though, if anger is as salable an emotion as it used to be (2010 Tea Party freakout). People don’t need to be ramped up any more than they already are; they’re looking for respite, solutions, someone to be adult and reasonable. Even while being calm for a moment, this ad reinforces that he’s an angry man. “Mad,” “upset,” “angry,” “war” are his word choices.

John A Logan…He uses the words himself. He clearly says that he’s angry.
I’d give the ad a D as it seems to miss the mark, but I’m sure it will appeal to some. I don’t think it appeals to independent or swing voters though. The strangest part for me is that he seems to feel justified in his rant, but felt the need to explain it through a response ad? It’s an odd approach and strikes me as inconsistent.

He doesn’t play the audio of the original rant, because the words were pretty over-the-top, and didn’t relate to Obamacare, or Nancy Pelosi, or taxes, or whatever he is trying to say his anger was about.
The original rant was all for political show.

yeah, could have been better. it answers but really doesn’t turn the democratic ad into a win for him, which should have been the goal of the response ad. oh well.

JAL: “Really made me mad”, “upsets me as well”, “I’m disappointed and even angry,” a significant fraction of the word choices in this spot reinforce exactly what the ad appears to be attempting to refute. Rage-o-holics will like it; solution-oriented swing voters and moderate women, probably not as much. Interesting, too, to go back to Obamacare when most of the national GOP is dropping it as a loser issue. Fine for the base, but you’ve gotta have them anyway, or your toast.

Bost: “What Quinn has done has made me mad” — that is the line he will probably repeat most often until election day. Quinn might be ahead a couple or within margin of error statewide but he’s getting smoked in Enyart’s district.

I laugh at the comments on this blog. Those reading this might be interested, but on the street and the people who will be voting are who we should be listening to, not political people. They have already made their mind up by who writes their pay checks.
