Wow. I have to plead utter ignorance that Mick Taylor played that guitar lead. Until I watched this video and wondered: where the hell is Keith Richards and who is that young guy on the guitar? Guess I missed it for some reason back in the day.

Speaking of the female backing vocal, it was a life-changing event for Merry Clayton. She had been woken out of bed by producer Jack Nitzchke, didn’t really feel up to it because she was about 8 months pregnant and tired, he convinced her to do it, she showed up at the studio in pj’s and rollers, knocked it out in about 3 takes, and had a miscarriage later that night after she got home.
Her brother is Sam Clayton of Little Feat.

With all due respect to the greatest rock band ever, Merry Clayton’s vocals make that song.
The Guardian reported that she was severely injured in a June car accident in LA. Please spare a kind thought for her recovery. Also, from that article, she sang on Skynyrd’s Sweet Home Alabama:
“I said we’re going to sing the crap out of this song,” she told the Guardian’s Dorian Lynskey earlier this year. “They have the nerve to sing Sweet Home Alabama! That’s the white interpretation of Alabama. It’s not sweet home to black people! It’s not sweet home at all. We’re going to sing it like a protest song. We were singing it through our teeth, like we were really angry: We’re going to sing your song, honey, but not because we want to – because it’s necessary.”
