Well nothing like overpromising a debate performance. Anything now short of having her resign at the conclusion will be viewed as a loss.
Way to manage expectations Schimpf!
Comment by How Ironic Monday, Sep 29, 14 @ 1:33 pm
Well, I did hear a rumor that Madigan could be allergic to shellfish.
Comment by VanillaMan Monday, Sep 29, 14 @ 1:34 pm
Will the libertarian candidate for AG be present? If not, why not?
Comment by William j Kelly Monday, Sep 29, 14 @ 1:38 pm
Unless he’s secretly planning to have Mike Schrimpf appear in his place, I don’t think Paul Schimpf has much of a chance at this debate.
Comment by 47th Ward Monday, Sep 29, 14 @ 1:44 pm
The IEA video is, in my opinion, much better than the one by the IFT. The IEA video has much better production values, is on message from start to finish, and has a much more ‘positive’ message format even if its message slams Rauner every chance it gets (and they are frequent).
Comment by Hit or Miss Monday, Sep 29, 14 @ 1:44 pm
The IEA video is creative. Negative, but creative. Nice ad.

Comment by Precinct Captain Monday, Sep 29, 14 @ 1:52 pm
To the Madigan ad update - Was that the result of her ==fighting Wall Street== and ==big banks ==? Or the Feds ==fighting==, after which we get a piece of the settlements just like other states?
iirc, it is moreso the latter. A well done ad, but perhaps not the most accurate.
Doubtful it will make much difference regardless, though the timing is interesting following that poll from last week showing her numbers among independents have rapidly fallen.
Comment by Formerly Known As... Monday, Sep 29, 14 @ 1:57 pm
Perspective?
Lisa Madigan has the money at HQ to run this Ad on TV at her whim
Paul Schimpf, at his whim, might see this Ad on TV if his campaign could afford cable at HQ.
Comment by Oswego Willy Monday, Sep 29, 14 @ 1:57 pm
What a lame Lisa ad.
Comment by Precinct Captain Monday, Sep 29, 14 @ 1:58 pm
The IEA ad is embarrassing for such a fine organization. A sock puppet? Way to be professional.
Comment by Slip one through Monday, Sep 29, 14 @ 1:59 pm
Do the Republicans still not get it? ‘It’ being civility toward their fellow citizens. The repeated use of violent imagery certainly doesn’t endear them to those voters who are still undecided. I cannot fathom why an educated man would use the phrase “Ram down the throats” and the other gentleman will “destroy” his opponent who is also a female. They need better messaging.
Comment by Cable Line Beer Gardener Monday, Sep 29, 14 @ 2:19 pm
I agree that that the Madigan ad was lame.
She took what could be a nice issue and made it sound really boring.
Lisa’s comments don’t help. I sound more excited when ordering my morning coffee than she does about helping poor people fight Wall Street.

“Watch Paul Schimpf destroy Lisa Madigan”
Unless Schrimpf is trying out for the WWF, that is an sophomoric language choice.

That “sock it” ad is the worst ad I’ve seen this year. It is annoying. It is even worse than the Madigan ad above.

Lisa madigan has an opponent? who knew!
best kept secret of the election….
Comment by ghost Monday, Sep 29, 14 @ 2:25 pm
Wow! that pronouncement makes me even less interested in watching. We already know it’s not likely to happen.
Comment by Levois Monday, Sep 29, 14 @ 2:32 pm
I like Lisa Madigan’s spot for US Attorney General. Especially the 17 second mark where she’s on the podium with Eric Holder in the background.
Lisa this is your chance to get out of Illinois politics. Go for it!
Comment by Almost the Weekend Monday, Sep 29, 14 @ 2:45 pm
I read the vitriolic comments about the Illinois Education Association’s sock puppet ad before watching it.
Yikes. You guys really undersold it’s awfulness.

To the “Rate it ” Ad,
Meh.
“B-, C+”
Due to the fact Schimpf will NOT be on TV, it becomes a solid “B” - being the only one on TV has advantages, so when it’s “Meh.”, it becomes “Ok, Lisa, got it”

Lisa Madigan: Fighting corruption just as soon as someone tells her about it!
Comment by vulcan Monday, Sep 29, 14 @ 3:15 pm
1) Running for AG and talking about destroying your opponent - not very lawyerly. 2)Sock puppet - kind of funny. It’s good to hear a different voice than the usual doom and gloom political ad voice - even if the sock puppet may be on helium.

ICYMI, not much “destroying” going on.

Tribbies must not have Mr. Shrimp’s released and forgot to ask how he was going to destroy her
Guess he goes to work for Mitt after the election

Well there is an hour of my life I’ll never get back. Schimpf came off as arrogant and Lisa really couldn’t answer questions about her Dad. In other news, the sun will set in the west…

That’s why Lisa Madigan is so popular. She seems calm, knowledgeable about her job, and sounds apolitical when she talks about her job. That’s the public image she projects. She probably wouldn’t win by the landslide margins she does if she was a fire breather.

==ICYMI, not much “destroying” going on.==
Really? I only caught the last 20 minutes or so, but it looked like there was destroying going on to me.
… it’s just too bad for Schimpf he wasn’t the one doing it.
Comment by Angel's Sword Monday, Sep 29, 14 @ 4:16 pm
Nobody was “destroyed” but then again, nobody expected anybody to be destroyed. when you have $20,000 in your campaign war chest and your opponent has over $4 million in their campaign war chest, then you have got to try and pick a fight just to get the public’s and the media’s attention.
I thought Paul Schimpf did pretty well when all things are considered. He made a very a solid point when he said that Lisa wouldn’t be human if she wasn’t biased toward her father’s side when he is accused of a myriad of improprieties and ethical & moral (and perhaps legal) stepping over the line on occasion. Lisa will be unable to adequately represent the state of Illinois when it comes to corruption or perceived corruption due to her heavily influenced partisan background.
As always, it will all boil down to voter turnout and partisan leanings on Election Day. Schimpf was impressive. The Illinois Republican Party’s support of Schimpf was “less than impressive” but many have long ago learned that you can only “depend” on the Illinois GOP to be “undependable”.
Comment by Coffee Cup Monday, Sep 29, 14 @ 4:17 pm
One day people will look past who her father is and realize that she has actually done a tremendous amount for the people of Illinois. If you look at what the AG’s office has done since the 1970 Constitution, you realize that she’s moved that office in a new direction. For those who think the AG should “fight corruption” read the IL Constitution and statutes. She doesn’t fight “corruption” because neither the IL Constitution, nor IL law, gives the Attorney General the ability to do so.
And his “she’s a nice lady” comment is frothing with condescension and sexism. He’s a goof.

Without addressing whether or not there’s a valid conflict of interest concern, I thought he made the point very unconvincingly. He sounded like he was trying to be an armchair psychologist, not like he was trying to make a serious legal point.

As of today I am certified to be on the ballot as the Libertarian Party candidate for Attorney General. I was never informed by the Chicago Tribune that there was going to be a debate today. In fact last week when I spoke with Ms. Reynolds of the Tribune regarding my candidate survey (that I only received because I called them about it) she never mentioned any such debate.
I would have really liked to ask Mr. Schrimpf why his hired guns intimidated our petition signers. I would have liked to have asked Ms. Madigan why she refuses to crack down on corruption. Alas, I was not even given an opportunity.
For an update, I have received confirmation from the Voting Rights Sections of the Department of Justice regarding the complaint I made against the Republican Party. They are investigating the matter.
It’s not enough that Madigan and Schrimpf have all the campaign money, but they also get the opportunity to speak to the media in a debate format. Not unbelievable in the least. Not surprised that our voter turnout is as poor as it is.
Comment by Ben Koyl Monday, Sep 29, 14 @ 4:24 pm
@Ben Koyl- When a Libertarian candidate actually beats “spoiled ballots” in an Illinois election I’m sure the Trib will invite you in.

Comment by Knome Sane Monday, Sep 29, 14 @ 4:58 pm
I would say Ben Koyl won, because he didn’t waste his day at the tribune.
Comment by William j Kelly Monday, Sep 29, 14 @ 5:15 pm
@Knome Sane I pay as little mind to Mr. Schimpf as people do to your trolling. So why don’t you make a valid point? He’s got as much a chance of winning as I do yet he is allowed to get his message out. Seems pretty biased of the Chicago Tribune, and I have not yet to received their criteria for such an invitation. Please feel free to point out any further grammatical errors.

If you want the Libertarian Party to one day be taken seriously, I suggest you find a better use of your limited time than arguing with commenters on the internet.

You beat me to the punch.
Instead of crying about it, do something about it. It seems to me that Libertarians aren’t taken seriously because of the whining, like yours. I think it would help your party’s cause if you actually won a race once in a while.
Comment by Knome Sane Monday, Sep 29, 14 @ 5:34 pm
And dude, you’re running against the guy, Shrimpf. I think you really ought to know how to spell his name, for crying out loud, er… excuse me, you already are.
Comment by Knome Sane Monday, Sep 29, 14 @ 5:37 pm
Tribbie editorial board probably didn’t know the Libbies were on the ballot. I’m not sure they get the local papers.
They’re probably busy writing that “new Chioago Plan.”
I haven’t gotten through all of it yet, but so far, it appears that crime and corruption are bad, education and jobs are good, and everyone who lives in Chicago has a stake in its future.
Real heavy-lifting.

That’s just not true. Schimpf actually has a shot at winning, you do not. You’re only six months out of law school.
Comment by Knome Sane Monday, Sep 29, 14 @ 5:42 pm
Oh, Wordslinger, I think they knew.
And I happen to agree with Ben, and not just because it makes life difficult for folks.
Yes, they have little hope of winning.
But in this election on particular, they bring a particularly different view and experience on the issues.
I can only imagine what Chad Grimm has to say about both Rauner and Quinn on taxes, guns and marijuana…just to name a few issues.
Although I have never met Mr Koyl, I have no doubt that he is at least as qualified as the GOP nominee.
Am I wrong?
The libertarian running for Treasurer has an MBA.
The libertarian for Comptroller seems pretty sharp.
I was for including the Greens in prior years, and I am disappointed that the Libertarians have been locked out.
PARTICULARLY after the Tribune chastised the GOP for their tactics to try and deny the libertarians the ballot.
They should have followed through on their own principles.
Comment by Yellow Dog Democrat Monday, Sep 29, 14 @ 6:04 pm
Madigan has a huge 4th quarter lead and just needs to run out the clock on her hapless foe. She has indeed adopted the “apolitical” approach that has worked so well for Jesse White.
I’m still disappointed that she chose not to run for Governor. I could have voted for her instead of against the greater of the two bozos representing the main parties on the ballot this fall.
