*** UPDATED x1 *** Question of the day

Posted in:

* Sun-Times

What better way to make your point than with a “Say Yes to the Dress” parody?

That’s exactly what a new ad from the College Republican National Committee is doing to urge people to vote for Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner. […]

It starts out with a woman wearing a classy, well-fit wedding dress, where she proclaims “the Bruce Rauner is perfect.”

“Bruce Rauner is becoming a trusted brand,” the woman says. “He has new ideas that don’t break your budget.”

* The online ad

* The Question: Funny or not? Take the poll and then explain your answer in comments, please.

  1. So out of touch it’s embarrassing.

Comment by my two cents Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:20 pm

  2. Voted “Not”

C’mon, there is a difference between laughing with someone, and laughing at someone.

This is a mocking at alleged simpleness.

If you have a wife, daughter, aunt, niece, …mother… this is a mocking to say simple superficial ideals drives them.

“If it perrdy and it sparkles, they’ll like it.”

    Pretty disappointing.

Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:22 pm

  3. I like it. It’s part of a campaign the college republicans are doing in a lot of different states to try to engage younger voters in a culturally relevant way

Comment by Nony Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:24 pm

  4. They do realize it’s the moms they need, right?

The only time I feel bad for republicans is when they try to be creative and funny. Awkward and pathetic every time.

Comment by Anonymous Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:24 pm

  5. This is bad on so many levels. So what you’re telling me is that evaluating a candidate for running a complex state government is like picking a wedding dress?

Comment by Lunchbox Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:25 pm

  6. Seemed creepy and degrading to women.

Who is the intended audience here?

This may say more about College Republicans and their values than anything else.

Comment by Gooner Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:25 pm

  7. it was also written by women, which i think is important to note before you blankly say that it’s patronizing to them

Comment by Nony Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:26 pm

  8. Shoulda been a Carhart instead of wedding dress.

Comment by Anonymous Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:26 pm

  9. Brittany, stop trying to make Rauner happen. #embarrassing

Comment by Regina George Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:27 pm

  10. ===…to try to engage younger voters in a culturally relevant way===

So, your granddaughter, daughter, niece…you want them talked “to” like this?

“Sit down sweetie, look at the perrdy dresses and get ‘engaged’ in politics.”

If it’s to get young women engaged and invested in the process, don’t those young women deserve to be respected enough to give them facts to make a judgement?

“We don’t respect or think engaging you with facts will work…”

It’s pretty condescending, if this is the true attempt to get participation.

Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:28 pm

  11. It can be patronizing to women and still be written by them. The two aren’t exclusive. It’s just a really, really bad ad.

Comment by Anon Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:29 pm

  12. A couple more points –

Do they really think the champagne at the end was a smart move, considering the “$55 million a year/out of touch/belongs to wine club” issue with Bruce? Are the people who made this ad from here?

This is just more evidence that the right should stick to angry rants. They are not funny by nature. They need to understand their limitations.

Comment by Gooner Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:30 pm

  13. I had to google to find out it’s a relatively popular long-running reality show.

Beats me if it’s funny, but it’s not meant for me.

Comment by wordslinger Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:31 pm

  14. OOoof. Easily the worst yet. It does stick with the theme that voters are dumb like the trash can van ad.

Comment by JS Mill Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:32 pm

  15. Typical of a national ad not properly tailored to the local race.

Comment by walker Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:32 pm

  16. This was hilarious! A little over done but it could be worse.

The Mom in it was the best part! This isn’t going to move anyone but considering two powerful, older men can be brought down and simplified to be nothing but two dresses is funny!

I don’t like it as a real ad but a great silly College Party online vid.

Comment by Crazy Like a Fox Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:33 pm

  17. It sounds like the people who have a comment have never seen the show. It is aimed at that group not “you”. It is funny and makes a statement that they will enjoy. Needless to say I voted “funny”.

Comment by Concerned Voter Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:33 pm

  18. Willy,

    I am a granddaughter, daughter niece, etc….
Don’t watch the show, but have friends that do, so I thought it was pretty funny. Of course it’s not supposed to be the end all and be all of the political conversation, just supposed to be eye-catching and different. Young people are incredibly turned off by politics and the status quo. Political participation among the age group this is targeted at is dismal at best. If this helps get the conversation started, i’m all for it.

Comment by Nony Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:34 pm

  19. “How will we afford the Bruce Rauner though? It clearly isn’t in our budget?”

    “Close loopholes and reform CMS.”

Comment by Anonymous Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:35 pm

  20. It seems fairly off-base in terms of who the Republican party should be catering towards. I can’t imagine mocking mothers of the bride as being out of touch will play well with collar county soccer moms. Not to mention it plays as out of touch toward the younger vote since Say Yes to the Dress isn’t nearly as culturally relevant as it was, say, four or five years ago.

Comment by Anon Mahna Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:35 pm

  21. ==They do realize it’s the moms they need, right?==
Er, no. Their vote problem is primarily with young-ish women who have been fed the “War on Women” bit. I think this ad is strange (as opposed to either funny or not funny). But I am not 20, and I am not deep into social media. I give them credit for trying to reach that female college age demographic with a unique and memorable ad that stands apart from the traditional political pap.

Comment by Responsa Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:36 pm

  22. May not like it….but that show is the biggest hit with 15 year old young women up to women in their early 30s. Women in those age groups have parties to watch that show…they love it. It is the “Sex In The City” for women of the 2014. So for all of you who say it is bad….they are not playing to you–they are going after women 18(some who can vote for the first time)-under 35. So if you don’t like it…you are just an “old man” who doesn’t know what is popular with young women!! This WILL get their attention!

Comment by Old men this is not for you Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:37 pm

  23. Is this commercial intended to offend women voters? Because if it is that’s hilarious! And if it isn’t that’s hilarious!

    Comment by William j Kelly Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:37 pm

  24. I loved it!
It is creative, goofy and puts a fun spin on things. It is great to see young ladies having fun and doing it their way!

    I salute you ladies!
    Well done!

Comment by VanillaMan Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:37 pm

  25. Not so much. I’m a woman, and I think it’s condescending. Electing a governor right now is a much bigger commitment than a dress for a day. Even though the pictures last forever.

Comment by Archiesmom Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:37 pm

  26. “Shoulda been a Carhart instead of wedding dress.”

Now that would have been a good ad. Imagine if she had changed into a Carhart and a Timex and said “Forget the pretty dress. Time to get to work fixing Illinois.”

Could have gone for a nice “women work and are not just pretty things” theme. But that would require College Republicans to accept that premise.

Comment by Gooner Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:38 pm

  27. Horribly condescending.

Comment by Concerned Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:38 pm

  28. Messed up ad. As a woman, I’m offended that they couldn’t address the issues head on. Gives the impression that women are just ‘bubbling idiots’ IMHO.

Comment by MP Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:39 pm

  29. Voted NOT. It’s not funny, it’s a pathetic ad. I thought it was a skit on SNL, high school version. They better try again.

Comment by Big Joe Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:39 pm

  30. @Regina - Nice.

I thought it was funny. It’s actually a solid parody of the real show. Sure it’s mindless, but it’s targeting a demographic who is also considered a key viewership of the show.

And compared to the other online ads, this one has some pretty good production qualities.

Some of you need to lighten up a little. Not every commercial needs ominous music comparing the other guy to Satan.

Comment by ChrisB Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:40 pm

  31. Bruce Rauner - Creating jobs for “comedy” writers not good enough to get hired by The Onion.

  33. I have a hunch ‘crazy like a fox’ is the women in the commercial.

    Comment by Angel's Sword Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:44 pm

  35. BTW - I am a big fan of this great show as well.

Now, perhaps a parody of this campaign done as Adventure Time!

  40. - Nony -,

You’d be surprised what people bring to these comments.

    I come at this very simply;

Do I feel engaging young female voters in this manner, even in tongue and cheek mocking way (I love a good spoof/mock), is it laughing with… or at?

Sometimes, even Saturday Night Live is laughing at, not with…

The question that helped me to find my own response? “Would I use it to engage a granddaughter? Daughter? Niece?”

    No…so I voted accordingly.

Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:47 pm

  41. As a former advertising executive, this is the ABSOLUTE worst ad I’ve seen produced ever! What person in their right mind after seeing this piece of crap would vote for Rauner? He is quickly becoming a joke! I said it yesterday and I will say it again today….

    Rauner=1969 CUBS!

This is a total collapse in the making. Keep it up Bruce, as far as I’m concerned. I will take Pat Quinn over you and your untested, unknown ideas any day.

You are a uber-rich guy, with uber-rich friends who only wants to buy this election. Hell, I’m sure if you were to get elected, you would quit like Sara Palin.

    Comment by NewWestSuburbanGOP'er Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:48 pm

  42. Allow me to clarify for some commenters:

This is a part of a series of similar ads released by the College Republican Org across the country. They use an almost the exact same dialogue for other Republican candidates. THEY WERE NOT APPROVED OF OR ENDORSED BY ANY CANDIDATE. And champagne is popped at the end of each one…

Comment by Nony Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:48 pm

  43. At around the :30 mark:
1.) “Worst Unemployment in the Midwest.” Michigan is considered East Coast now?

2.) “The highest income tax in the nation.” Really… they said that.

Comment by Jimmy CrackCorn Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:50 pm

  44. Oh no!!! I just spilled really expensive wine on my really cheap Bruce Rauner!

Comment by Ducky LaMoore Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:50 pm

  45. Horrible. I get the idea of age and cultural relevance trying to engage college voters…even the right idea to somewhat parody the question of ‘who’ to vote for. But really…over the top tacky, non-inspiring and just plain painful to watch. 1 out of 10.

Comment by northernwatersports Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:50 pm

  46. And another thing, if I were you after seeing this crap- I would fire whomever approved it.

Methinks, you are not a smart or a skilled businessman as you are claiming to be.

Actually, don’t fire them, have them produce more junk like this, so the public can see who you really are.

    Comment by NewWestSuburbanGOP'er Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:51 pm

  47. It’s insulting. Full stop.

Comment by Aldyth Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:52 pm

  48. Nony,
You are probably right, and that’s the problem.

When you don’t understand the issues, you bungle into things like the champagne at the end.

And then people see this and think “Rauner. Oh yeah. He’s the guy who really likes expensive wine. Thanks for the reminder, kids!”

Comment by Gooner Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:52 pm

  49. Insulting, condescending, not even a parody of a bad joke. In other words, it perfectly captures Brucie and his campaign…but not in the way they intended!

    Comment by D.P.Gumby Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:53 pm

  50. Most of you don’t et this…it is NOT intended for you–it is intended for those who watch Jon Stewart to get all their news…if you say it is sexist etc…you are missing it…you are not the target audience.. the other ads are for you. 52. D.P. Gumby et. al…New West Suburbaner GOP–it is obvious why you are no longer in advertising…this is playing to the “new” 18 year old voters who have NEVER voted before and the 20’s somethings that are too busy buying their lattes at Starbucks to even know who is running for Governor…again, you are NOT the target market. Young women LOVE that show..again just like the young women from the late 90s and early 2000s love S&C.

“Bruce Rauner is becoming a trusted brand,” the woman says. “He has new ideas that don’t break your budget.” He will be cashing out shortly after you buy the dress. Want a SSD with that?

Comment by zatoichi Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 3:21 pm

  81. OMflippinG this is totally insulting to women. it’s not funny. it treats women as if what they look for in a candidate is some outdated “i like the boy” concept. it is multiple levels of wrong.

and, yes, this can be true if it is written by women….for a man.
in junior high things seem to get divided, girls who decide that they have to do everything for the male gaze and they become opposed to girls who are just trying to do whatever. the women who wrote this are like those girls in junior high who I found to be idiotic.

  90. Pay attention Rauner critics: This ad is intended for a very targeted demographic consisting of persons about whom you know nothing, about whom you CAN no nothing, and of whom you aren’t even aware!

This ad looks pathetic and lame to your sad and narrow minds, but the pro-Bruce people are playing Vulcan three-dimensional advertising chess and this is the first move in endgame!!

  91. Great Ad ! The oldies prolly don’t get it - but for younger voters - those looking to the future of their lives rather than the past - this ad is hip and relevant.

Comment by SlapshotII Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 3:46 pm

  92. Sequel: They go to pick up the dress. It is filled with fleas, doesn’t fit, and is wrong color. Customers inquire. Schrimpf appears to tell them Mr. Rauner divested his share long ago and has no knowledge of the inner workings of this company.

    Now that would be funny!

The younger voters do not use the word “hip” to describe viral video marketing.

Rich are all of these IP’s regurgitating the same mindless argument coming from the DC College Repubs office?

Comment by Jimmy CrackCorn Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 3:59 pm

  95. Hey look! A fresh new crop of Raunerbots, posting snarky comments ,and explaining how the “inside baseball” political animals who are (in many cases) long time political campaign consultants, or otherwise involved in actually winning elections ,on how they are “out of touch” or telling them “it’s not for you”. Either Rauner’s campaign pulled a few of their college age volunteers off the phone banks to give us their deep insight, or the usual suspects just changed their names to seem more hip (oops- sorry I used such dated slang).

I voted not funny, but I guess if you enjoy middle aged being portrayed in this fashion you might find the “humor” in this ad. Please run this one in heavy rotation Rauner camp!

  99. Just plain dumb. There is no logic or relevance to comparing the candidates to dresses. Embarrassing.

Comment by Langhorne Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 4:07 pm

  100. It’s condescending, representing Rauner’s attitude towards the voters he’s trying to attract, and it’s stupid, representing Rauner’s opinion of those voters. I suppose this works for him.

Comment by Wensicia Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 4:10 pm

  101. Meh. I would have found it funnier if it poked fun at Rauner too (i.e., non-partisan.) I do like the “Bruce Rauner” (the dress, not the candidate) though.

“He has new ideas that don’t break your budget” That’s actually one of my problems with it, is how materialistic the SYTTD is. Seriously, $6k+ on a dress?? It’s not about celebrating the creating of a new family, it’s showing off how much money they have. Wait…that reminds me of someone….

Comment by Skeptic Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 4:13 pm

  102. “The highest income tax in the nation.”

Illinois may have a high income tax rate but other states have higher rates. In California, for example, I know that it is more than double the Illinois rate for some people.

This ad might appeal to a college freshman. For me the ad gets a failing grade.

Comment by Hit or Miss Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 4:13 pm

  103. As a recent mother-of-the-bride, I did not find this offensive, condescending, sexist… I thought it was quite funny. As political ads go, this one was spot on at making Rauner stand out as a candidate. Isn’t that the point.

Comment by Southern Girl Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 4:17 pm

  104. I cringed through the whole thing. It was literally painful for me to watch. Regardless of the age or sex of the writers, it did not appeal to me at all, and I’m a young woman.

One also wonders if sooner than later, microtargeting will become a victim of its own success, as marketing-savvy young people are turned off by ever more precise - yet blatant - attempts to target them.

Comment by Commander Norton Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 4:17 pm

  105. As a husband who has been subjected to too many episodes of Say Yes to the Dress, I actually found this to be pretty funny. The mom’s reactions are very funny. I don’t see how this is sexist at all. As others have said, this isn’t supposed to be “the ad” that moves the election.

Comment by Just Observing Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 4:23 pm

  106. Just askin’ the Rauner folks: Why would anybody find this funny? Ya’all need a better selection of your focus groups. Is this the best ya’all can do to push your case for being gov?

How’s about instead, going out and actually describing your plans for what you’re gonna do as gov instead of evading and wishy-washing around most every real issue? By the way: Where’s the $ coming from under your administration?

    Comment by sal-says Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 4:25 pm

  107. At least if I ever meet Rauner again I’ll know what to say… Hey Bruce! Where’s your dress?!

Comment by Ducky LaMoore Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 4:25 pm

  108. Absolutely horrible. And not just because it’s very demeaning to women.

I didn’t think I could be more opposed to Bruce Rauner. But i was wrong.

Comment by too obvious Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 4:30 pm

  109. Hey, the women’s vote is all about superficial niceties, right? I mean, what’s more important to a female voter than a dress? Substantive issues? Bah.

Too bad this is just online - although it has been pointed to on Slate and some other sites - if enough subruban women saw it, it would flip a bunch to Quinn pretty quick. Just about as tone deaf as one can get.

Comment by Joe Bidenopolous Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 4:52 pm

  110. ==Oh no!!! I just spilled really expensive wine on my really cheap Bruce Rauner!==

Yes! The one way the ad is funny is if you hatewatch it.

Soccermom has expressed it best, I think, in that there was a germ of an idea that had potential but was poorly executed. Several others here have pointed to a basic lack of respect as the culprit and that’s probably correct.

Comment by yinn Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 4:53 pm

  111. =it was also written by women, which i think is important to note before you blankly say that it’s patronizing to them=

Riiiight, because no women patronize other women? Give me a break. Have you seen Ann Coulter and her ilk? They loudly proclaim that women are the problem. Having female writers does not provide you immunity in a case of sexism…or anything else.

  117. I’ve seen countless parodies by liberals of conservative Republican parents. Some were funny, some were most definitely not.

This one didn’t do much for me. Politics is a game of addition, and they subtracted every Dem-leaning woman over 40 - and every daughter who loves her Dem-leaning mom.

I learned a very long time ago, never, never, never get between a daughter and her mother.

    I voted Not.

It’s better than some of the negative mud slingling we’ve seen in most of the commercials.

Comment by Pete Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 6:37 pm

  122. Customizing for the Illinois race, the cable reality show they parody SHOULD have been “RuPaul’s Drag Race”. I mean, you have both candidates outrageously making themselves over, to superficially look like something they really are not and never will be. And if you unwrap them, you’ll get an unwanted surprise.

Comment by Newsclown Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 7:25 pm
