* Rep. Chad Hays requested this crazy good version of Dylan’s “I Shall Be Released” by Grace Potter. It takes about a minute to get going, but make sure to watch all the way to the end. Wow…

Awesome. A big aural void when it’s over. A high bar is being set with these morning songs.

Saw her at Lolla a couple years ago, easily one of the best shows at the festival.

Whew.
The Band has been a marker in my life for forty-five years. (So much so that I was AT The Last Waltz!! Which, in 1976, was years before Grace Potter was even born.)
It never occurred to me that someone would ever EVER come close to Richard Manuel’s beyond- words-extraordinary performance of this song.
I’ll borrow a line from another Band song to describe my reaction to Potter’s rendition: “I feel the freeze down in my knees.”
I loved The Band so much that can’t possibly bring myself to say that Potter’s version is better than Manuel’s.
But sure as shootin’, she makes it a photo finish.
Stunning. Absolutely stunning.
This video makes my day. Thanks.
I’m outta here.

===Stunning. Absolutely stunning.===
Yeah. Not only a magnificent voice but the knowledge that the silence between notes is just as important.
Saw her at Phases of the Moon. She’s a great dancer, too. She’s just got it all, man. Mesmerizing.

Bravo to Rep. Hays for his love of Dylan and The Band, and it’s always good to hear this masterpiece of melancholy. But I’m sticking with Richard’s version, with Chrissie Hynde’s take at the Dylan 30th anniversary show in the running. Grace Potter’s intro is a nice homage to Neil Young’s words at The Last Waltz, though, right down to the jacket.
