* When conservative Republicans refer to moderate Republicans as “RINOs,” it shows how small-minded they really are. Politics is a game of addition, not subtraction. Only people who don’t mind losing want to keep their party “pure.”
Why do the House Democrats perform so well in the suburbs and in many Downstate areas? One reason is they recruit former Republicans to run. Just to cite one example, the woman who beat the allegedly “unbeatable” state Rep. Skip Saviano was a former Republican. The list is long, and it’s not just the House. DuPage County’s only Democratic Senator is a former Republican.
The Democrats in this state welcome former Republicans with open arms. The ultra-conservative Republican “activists” too often want to throw moderates out of their party and keep former Democrats away at all costs.
* So instead of celebrating this young man’s hard work for the House Republican Organization, we get this headline…
Illinois House Republican campaigns run by former Clinton campaign staffer
OMG!!! Call the purity police! Also, if you look at the hyperlink’s text, you’ll see the original headline: “HRO Head Joe Woodward’s Democrat Connections Raise Eyebrows.” At least they toned it down.
* But Woodward still has to endure some guilt by association crud…
HRO’s day-to-day political operations are run by Joe Woodhouse (photo right), who has a resume that includes work for Hillary Clinton, and a left-wing environmental group. […]
The email address Woodward used is linked to his job as Director of Operations for his father, Michael J. Woodward’s, law firm in Berwyn Illinois.
Starting in 1999, Woodward’s father began donating to the Democratic Citizens of Berwyn and the Berwyn Regular Democratic Organization. Prior to that, he donated to Republicans such as Jim Ryan and former Governor George Ryan.
Horrors!!! Could he be some sort of Democratic plant? A Communist “Manchurian Staffer” who is about to take a purposeful dive for the Evil Democrat Machine in order to clear a path for THAT WOMAN???
Please.
He did a little low-pay grunt work for Hillary seven years ago to get some experience. He worked for his dad, who happens to be a Democrat and who is currently very ill. Yet, for some reason, conservatives have to treat anybody formerly connected in any way with the Democratic Party as if they were ISIL members.
* At least they did include this information…
Woodward explained to Illinois Review that he’s worked for HRO in the 2010, 2012 and 2014 campaign cycles. Illinois State Board of Elections’ records show Woodward has been paid $4,000 a month by HRO in the 2014 campaign. He’s also been paid by State Rep. Jim Durkin, the Northfield Township GOP, and Elizabeth Coulson’s PACs in the past few years.
“I also worked as a Communications Analyst in the [former House Republican Leader] Tom Cross’ administration from Jan 2011-Sept 2013,” Woodward told IR.
Woodward told IR that while working for Tom Cross’ administration, he “wrote policy communications for GOP State Reps David McSweeney, Chris Nybo, David Harris, Dennis Reboletti, Tom Morrison, Sandy Cole and Sid Mathias during that time.”
If somebody dropped a dime on Joe they ought to be ashamed of themselves. Seriously, what the heck? The guy is working literally non-stop for his candidates and his party for lousy wages and he’s gotta deal with this silly grilling on top of everything else?
Unreal.

Let’s see, it’s about 31 days to an election… yup, it’s about time to fire up the circular firing squad. Maybe we can manage to lose some seats in the ILGA while we are at it.

Welcome to the Illinois Republican Party. Where good deeds are often attacked by someone, somewhere, and at all times. Woodward is a great hardworking guy and I’ve enjoyed working and interacting with him.
A hundred more of him and we would be back in the driver’s seat, much to the chagrin of Democrats and those who claim they are the “base” of the GOP.
Too bad we have a few that focus more on working against Republicans instead of Democrats that they would waste their time with this nonsense.

Dear Joe Woodward,
I have your 6.
The only thing you have to apologize for…are the Dopes questioning you.
You’re the type of guy I would pick up a clipboard for, because in reality, those purist, made it clear, I’m not their type of guy.

Yup. I don’t agree with Speaker Madigan on everything, but I’m very thankful and appreciative of how he’s strengthened the state Democratic party. I look up at Michigan, and think that if we weren’t so organized, Illinois could easily be like Michigan (massive Republican majorities in both houses because of poorly distributed Democratic votes.) As a Democrat, I’m thankful we have a strong state Democratic party that’s always looking to grow.

There’s no mystery; there are plenty of so-called conservatives who are anything but; they are reactionary whiners who have no interest in governing whatsoever.
Winning elections and having accountability and responsibility would scare them to death.

-Bryar’s willingness to connect himself to what is widely considered a political ruse has caused some to question the legitimacy of his Congressional bid. Last week, Bryar’s campaign released results of a poll it had commissioned that showed his support in the 5th District hovering near zero percent.
Donoghue, for one, said he wasn’t sure why a candidate would do something so against his own political interests.
“I think that’s probably a straw candidate,” Donoghue said. “I’m not in a position to characterize the motive, but that kind of an admission is not one that I would take completely at face value.”
But Bryar’s campaign manager, Joe Woodward, said the petition challenge process is about “accountability and integrity.”
“This campaign is about honesty,” Woodward said. “Paul Bryar is in this to win this.”-
This just reminded me that Joe also ran a campaign for one of the lesser known candidates in the 5th Congressional to replace Rahm Emanuel, Paul Bryar. The only thing notable about his campaign is that it released a poll it commissioned showing it’s candidate with only 1 percent report. Raised a lot of eyebrows at the time.

I do not rant about conservatives who oppose liberals like Bruce Rauner within the GOP any more than I rant about liberals who oppose conservatives like Brandon Phelps in the Democratic Party.
I simply tell my progressive friends to hop in their cars, drive down to Southern Illinois, and convince the voters that they are wrong.
I have basically the same position when it comes to the so-called “Fair Map” proposal.
When the GOP reflects the core values of Illinois voters, when they have equally good ideas, and run equally good campaigns, they can argue that they should have an equal chance to be in the majority.
But right now, the party platform looks pretty much the same as it did in 1994. It worked then, it doesn’t work now.

Here is another example of Madigan basically running the ILGOP too and the profession trough feeders can’t imagine why Republicans may have a problem with that. Seriously, the other party has operatives running our campaigns isn’t a big deal?
If Woodward is doing such a great job, let me ask this: How many seats are we gonna pick up? One…. Maybe? He’s been there three cycles and all we have done is lose seats.
We need a lot more people like Dan Proft running races. He at least believes in Republican values.
Comment by RINO Watch Friday, Oct 3, 14 @ 1:34 pm
Well-put Rich.
Illinois Dems recruited former Republicans not only as candidates, but also as staff at various levels. Some have even moved on to political jobs as Republicans in other states or DC. They got good training and experience.

So out of curiosity is any sort of Democratic moment in your life cause to be looked at suspiciously for the rest of your political life?
If so and if that is the case, I would guess that Ronald Regan’s time as a Democrat
http://content.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,1894529_1894528_1894518,00.html
He campaigned against Nixon when Nixon ran for senate for example…
So I am guessing that Reagan would not be worthy in your world?
Your point begs a bigger question… If you could win with someone running the political side who disagreed with you entirely but who could get the job done, does winning trump purity?

Winning? Maybe you missed my point. Woodward was there in 2010 until now. We only lost ground to become an irelevant superminority. This cycle it is even a bigger circus. Nixon? Gone. Bell? Gone. Bryant? Gone. How many races do we stand to pick up? Answer the question.
Because this winning no matter what thing isn’t working. We aren’t winning.
Maybe it is because Republican votes want to vote for an alternative to Madigan, not another supplicant to him.

Exhibit A why nobody takes, or should take, the Illinois Review seriously. They’re success is dependent on the failure of Republicans, because they have this inane belief that will somehow make conservatives stronger. That’s like arguing if I can’t get the exact plants I want, a perpetual drought would give me a better chance.

Look, I take Republicans at their word now…their national party platform. Anti choice? check. Against civil rights for all? check. this is less about them being strategically stupid and more that they are far right conservatives and want what they want. I will not have what they are having.

Also contrary to what people who are really into politics think within the GOP, the Illinois swing voter can really give two shakes about Mike Madigan.

Exactly.
Ronald Reagan eventually did more to expand the Republican Party than anyone other than Abraham Lincoln.
Reagan won Madigan’s 13th Ward. Twice.
The people who most often invoke Reagan’s name are the same people most responsible for alienating those “Reagan Democrats” and assuring that they never became actual Republicans in this state.

He’s just what the HGOP needs and has needed for a long time. He wants to work with people who say something when they send a release out. He’s a total winner. If you lose with Joe on your team, you never had a chance to win in the first place. Every candidate who’s got this dude working for them can sleep better….cause he doesn’t. More and more these folks seem to want to meet only to decide who to vote off the island. Winning and having a say in public policy is no longer the goal. Raising money and getting their name in the media have become the main drivers. Soon they will be very lonely on the island.

They could find plenty of common ground and work together. I would opine that they have and they are. I like Sandack, don’t know Mattune. I do know people who liked him very much. If anything, he provided Sandack some inspiration. Get over it and work for Our party. For whoever you see fit. Just be a part of the solution someplace.

Maybe Woodward is a republican, maybe he isn’t. If he does good work, who cares?
There ought to be a place for a moderate/independent to work for candidates of both parties. And by understanding the other sides’ arguments better, I’d imagine that person would do a better job than the average staffer.
Comment by Robert the Bruce Friday, Oct 3, 14 @ 2:30 pm
Are people to forsake their beliefs in order to win? If you can’t beat them join them? Sorry, but that simply does not work for people that are on the evangelical right. Many of us would rather be able to look ourselves in the mirror knowing we have beliefs that we actually believe, then to change our world view to win an election.

Here is the rub;
I have been an advocate of the Maureen Murphy - Mark Beaubien model for years. Period. I don’t need the lecture, use the “search” key.
So, spending in that very specific race, for those very specific reasons, I have a beef. My beef is also is about the Dopes who refuse to see Proft isn’t about the Purity of “Purity”. Proft earned his respect of winning or losing on picking his spots, and for his reasons, and being blind to that is ignorant if the facts.

Folks who are tired of both sides but don’t want to be Libertarians or Green. From all the polling that keeps being reported, a little under a third of the people polled in all these races claim to be independents. Would be interesting to see if an independent could actually survive.

Rich –
and speaking of those Reagan dems, I’ve been a life long Republican. Also this month I get my 25 year pin for being a member of Local 150. That right RINO, I’ve made my living and put food on the table for my family being a union guy in the trades.
These are the guys that can really swing elelction when the Rauner’s of the world quit attacking unions and bleating about right to work.
Trades guys are conservitive in nature. Often time bordering on libertarian. All they want to do is go to work, make a decent wage and provide for their families. Lots of our guys make north of $75K. As an example take a guess what the top grossing OE made in the chicagoland market in 2007? go ahead guess. And if you guess below $275 your wrong. the guy running a tower crane 6-7 days a week on top of Trump I believe working 12 hours a day. and how do you think hes’ gonna vote on issues like taxes and such? Don’t mess with their jobs, and they will vote guns, taxes and schools. threaten their livlyhood and you give the Union a chance to turn 30-35% of their membership to the dems.
Think about that, going into a Union and having the potential to get 30-35% of what should be your opponents base. After the 2000 presidential election the AFL did a study/poll of the trades. a full 35% voted for Bush over guns. And the dems and unions started a whole Union Sportsman’s Alliance to combat it.
Keep it up with your purity and see how the super-minority feels for the next 40 years.
