Durbin, Oberweis both air sharply negative ads

Posted in:

* “Jim Oberweis, his Tea Party doesn’t include you”

* “Dick Durbin broke Washington, and it’s time to vote him out”

Discuss.

  1. off topic, but Quinn has a new negative running on the LeapSource stuff. It uses a clip from the NBC news story with Carol Marine quoting the threats Rauner made on the female CEO. Its a killer.

  2. Durbin pulls out the Mediscare.

Oberweis with the typical non resonate blather.

  3. Oberweis sure throws the kitchen sink. It’s memorable, if hyperbolic.

the Durbin spot is phone-it-in. I guess he has to spend his money on something.

  4. They both stink.

  5. The voice over man on the Overweis ad is top notch.

The Durbin campaign should hire him.

  6. They are actually both pretty good.

My only issue is Oberweis continuing to hammer away at the IRS issue. Didn’t that story drift away after like…2 news cycles? I’d be surprised if polling showed any voters (outside of the Tea Party) cared about this issue.

  7. I’m sorry, we’re blaming Durbin for the NSA? Yea, that’ll sell. I give the Oberweis ad a C- for being over the top and not credible.

I give the Durbin ad a B for being more relevant, more specific and more credible.

  8. Both ads are barely ok with standard attacks, but not a lot of creativity. Both appealing to their bases, means a Durbin win.

Except there’s one new twist: Durbin is the “Father of Gridlock.” Oh, that’s believable!

  9. Just got my letter from Obe pleading for financial assistance. “Please help friend, spare a nickel, spare a dime….” Or spare a couple thousand. It is so sad and disheartening seeing such wealthy, powerful men forced to to grovel and beg for their very existence; and that of our State.

  10. The anti-Durbin ad was cooking along pretty well until the “He broke Washington” conclusion line. It’s true that Durbin’s power, uber insider status, and personal financial gain is borne from his length of office there. But that also applies to many others who are entrenched in the U.S. Senate as well, and while it is certainly a big part of Washington’s problem, laying it all on Dick went a little too far. The Oberweis campaign could fix that in a jiffy with a quick edit–and they should. Currently a C+ But could be a B+.

  11. The charges in the anti-Durbin ad are troubling and presented in a chilling fashion and concludes with “the facts don’t lie” which leaves the viewer with the question: what facts?

  12. When are they debating?

  13. I’ve been trying to figure out for years who broke Washington and all the while the answer has been right under my nose. Our. Own. Dick. Durbin. Wow. Thanks for straightening that out Mr.Oberweis.

  14. The anti Oberweis ad is pretty standard three- weeks- before- the- election scare fare. Neither memorable or something that will stand out in the crowd. C. But they’re ahead so probably don’t care too much about commercial quality and creativity as Word correctly pointed out.

  15. Hard to rate these. Both are “shot at and missed”.

  16. Durbin’s ad is a C to me if only for the fact that it’s an average attack ad.

Oberweis’ ad is an F because its entire premise is asinine and contemptuous of the electorate’s intelligence in a way that many voters will recognize.

Republicans twice — twice! — shut down the government to thwart President Obama and the implementation of Obamacare. They voted against emergency relief for Hurricane Sandy victims and for slashing everything but tax breaks for the rich and richest.

Since the days of Newt Gingrich, they’ve worked to destroy bipartisanship and since 2009 have almost completely done so. The current Republican-controlled House has set records for sloth, inactivity and empty gestures (just how many votes to de-fund Obamacare have they taken, knowing it wasn’t going to happen?).

But Dick Durbin is the one who broke Washington?

Jim, we’re not as dumb as you assume we are.

  17. The music in Oberweis’ ad is too loud. It was hard to focus on what the narrator was saying.

Durbin’s ad was a basic hit piece. Nothing to write home about.
