* Remember that Dan Proft mailer I showed you the other day depicting Speaker Mike Madigan in rather revealing female workout clothing? Well, Proft animated the image in a new ad for a different House Republican candidate…
Words fail me.

The whole ad had an 80s infomercial vibe.
All I know is that I now want to watch Karate Kid while using my Popeil Pasta Maker.

Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t see how this helps the Republican.

Juvenile. Cheap looking. Is this what a million bucks buys?

There’s something off about the voice.
It’s like he’s reading a 45-second script in a 30-second commercial.
Also, it doesn’t sound like he really cares.
It also ties Republicans to hating Chicago Democrats. OK. There’s more to governing than hating on people in other parts of the state.
Democrats may be insincere about the ideas they campaign on. But Republicans seem to feel entitled to be elected without campaigning on issues.
Mostly Illinois voters have rejected the idea-free campaigns of the GOP.

I’m thinking that whoever fell in love with this concept would have used it for anything. — political, car batteries, dog food.
Because the concept may be fabulous, but it is forced.
Comment by Wordslinger Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 12:51 pm
When has demonizing Michael Madigan worked for the GOP?
Is Dan Proft secretly working for Madigan to get Republicans to spend money on messages that don’t work?
Comment by Carl Nyberg Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 12:52 pm
It needed apples, preferably dancing apples. The lack of dancing apples was disappointing.

Thanks for posting this. After your headline, I felt compelled to view it. Ugh!
There is a funny line about the candidate who will “fashion changes in Springfield . . “

Being from Southern Illinois, my guess is that most people in Bryant’s district won’t recognize Mike Madigan by just his face on that picture.
Comment by Southern Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 1:21 pm
does not have the name attachment the last one did, but this is still
feminizing to denigrate and that attacks women as well as Madigan.
Republican tone deaf approach to things that involve women is just astounding.
Comment by Amalia Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 1:25 pm
The problem with this ad is; Madigan’s got the legs for it and he knows it and flaunts it.
Comment by 13thone Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 1:28 pm
Amalia is absolutely right on the womens issues. It does seem like Proft thinks that labeling the Speaker female is an insult.
In addition, Proft went to war on those who backed marriage equality, but he does seem to have some strange fantasies. It would never occur to most men to think of the Speaker dressed that way.
Those fantasies are OK of course, as long as he doesn’t want to take away rights of others.
This seems to tell us more about Proft than about anything else.
Comment by Gooner Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 1:46 pm
One more note –
Proft has made a career about screaming that government is spending too much.
Apparently now he thinks government is not spending enough.
Comment by Gooner Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 1:48 pm
It’s weird and quirky, but it’s catchy. To those who wonder if anyone in the field of voters even know Mike Madigan…why yes they do. He’s taking flak from both directions. His name comes up a lot in the field.

I thought it was Tyler at first.
Dude looks like a lady.

A guy… we all know his name, but most in Southern Illinois aren’t going to know his face.
“Here’s a picture, who is it?”
Ummm… it’s that guy… umm… (yep!)
Comment by Southern Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 2:04 pm
Southern, with due respect partner, this ad has audio.

Not to be a wet blanket but… since bleeding from the eyes is a symptom of Ebola maybe you might want to consider changing the title to “My eyes are BURNING!” or something similar?
Comment by Secret Square Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 2:23 pm
It is a funny ad. But, this is Illinois and Mike Madigan is never out of fashion.
Comment by Steve Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 2:50 pm
I think the add, despite the corny graphics is effective. It plays to the Southern
Illinois belief that Chicago is responsible for everything bad in the world, and that “good old fashioned values” Southern Illinois should have a more of a place at the table. It isn’t in any way correct, but plays to the existing prejudices out there. Just sayin!

Comment by Empty Suit Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 3:42 pm
I think this will work as well as the “Fire Madigan” campaign worked last time.
Comment by Demoralized Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 3:50 pm
Demo, funny you bring that up. 4 years ago there was no money behind that campaign. This year it’s alive and well in districts all over the state. It will work in a few places. People on both sides are very angry with the Speaker.
Comment by A guy... Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 3:57 pm
Using this kind of photoshopped image is an insult to the sensibilities and intelligence of the public. Since the intent of this ad is to influence voters, it reflects how the voters are viewed by the creator of this ad. Trashy political ads makes me less likely to support the agenda that is trying to be pushed. How about respecting the intelligence of the public and trying to constructively draw out differences and ideas?
Comment by Robin Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 3:57 pm
After all these decades, even seeing Madigan in a suit and tie makes my eyes bleed.
Comment by Streator Curmudgeon Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 4:32 pm
A guy…
I’m aware it has audio but it doesn’t mention Mike Madigan. Once again, we all know who Mike Madigan is but most wouldn’t know his face if they saw him down at the Wal-Mart.
Comment by Southern Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 6:41 pm
“How about respecting the intelligence of the public”
