* Gov. Quinn’s mom has been making the media rounds lately. NBC 5 interviewed her earlier this week, and the Sun-Times got access to her yesterday…
“I’m a little affected, I must say,” by how [Bruce Rauner’s] campaign has portrayed her son, she said. “It’s a very harsh campaign. We’ve been through several. But I’ve never been through one like this.” […]
“I would say, I think that you should modify your tone and your language. I think you have a very poor way of addressing people.” [she responded when asked what she would say to Rauner] […]
“I’m horrified,” Rauner said Thursday, laughing. “At least what I say is true. Unlike him…
“We gotta deal with facts. and we got to hit those hard. And if his mom is mad at me for trying to get those facts out, you know, so be it.”
Rauner’s right to laugh that one off. Of course Quinn’s mom is gonna say nice things about her son and harsh things about his opponent. But the “so be it” line is not exactly nice.
Full video of the interview is here.
* The paper also posted a photo of the governor as a young boy…

===“We gotta deal with facts. and we got to hit those hard. And if his mom is mad at me for trying to get those facts out, you know, so be it.”===
Bruce. Rauner.
This is also Bruce Rauner;
===However, he said it wasn’t an admission of wrongdoing but: “because we’re nice folks. We treat people well,”===
Rauner decided to take a shot at a 90+ year old woman.
===”And if his mom is mad at me for trying to get those facts out, you know, so be it.”===
Feel better Bruce? Feel warm taking a shot at a woman over 90?
“Mrs. Quinn supports her son. I never met her, but I’ve hear she’s a great lady, and I wish her nothing but the best.”
Nope.
Rauner, “And if his mom is mad at me for trying to get those facts out, you know, so be it.”
Pathetic.

When I grow up I’m going to be a lawyer. And I’m going to create the Citizens Utility Board to keep the utilities from gouging senior citizens. And then I’m going to help people appeal their property taxes and I’m going to pass an amendment to shrink the Illinois House. After that I’m going to work for Chicago’s first black mayor and then I’m going to be state treasurer and then I’ll run for the U.S. Senate. Next I’ll be governor of Illinois someday. And after that I’ll run for President…

On Rauner’s comments, yeah he overdid it. As others said he should have kept it light with something like “I would hope his own Mother is supporting him!” etc. and perhaps a light-hearted dig that she might want to send Pat to his room for the awful things he says about me.

Bruce was busting out lemonade stands left and right at that age. When folks figured out it wasn’t lemonade he’d pocket the cash and unload the liabilities on some unsuspecting kindergartners.

This interview is very effective for the Quinn campaign. They reached several segments in one fell swoop–women, mothers and Catholics. Rauner didn’t help himself by engaging her through the media. He actually comes off as very callous. This interview is but another passage in the narrative that paints Rauner as a cold, unfeeling person who disrespects women of all ages. I agree with the other commenters that Rauner should have kept it light, or better yet, not even commented.

He’s not respecting or disrespecting her. This is not a commentary on women at all despite your best (and very poor) efforts to make it that way. Every family of a candidate is sensitive to how their loved one is torn up in elections. Maybe one of the ladies in the Rauner family could read all your snipe, or Mr. Sanguinetti could read your blather and comment on how you’ve been treating the ladies.
Mrs. Quinn is not a naif. She gets the process. Interviewing someone’s mom? Kinda dumb on it’s face. How do you do much else but laugh it off.

I also guess Slip and Sue and her credentials are fair game, since she is literally on the ballot and trying to be a heartbeat away from running the 5th largest state in America.
