Quinn wins again. While he deflected some questions, he did a much better job of providing concrete responses. Rauner still stutters when asked to expound on his record of African American hiring and listing his cadre of African American advisors. Rauner also pinned Rahm’s failure on crime and staffing the police force on the Governor.
Comment by Valerie F. Leonard Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 9:12 pm
This was worst of the three debates. For both of them. No winner. They kept repeating themselves. Talking too fast. Predictable and overused taunts. What a choice we have. Rauner’s comments on education and charter schools were his strength. Originally Quinn’s comment about lack of AAs in executive levels at Rauner companies was good question. When he harangued on it the fifth and sixth time, tho, it completely lost its power because Quinn just looked like a wild eyed bully.

I knew I forgot this, but thanks for reminding me. If Rauner is a classic anything, he is a CLASSIC bully.
No wonder he and Rahm get along so well.
As for the repetition, I’m sure Rauner didn’t like Quinn reminding the AA voters 5-6 times at least just as much, if not a lot more, than you.
It’s not the kind of thing you want repeated excessively when you want AAs to vote for you, unless you’re Quinn. Then, of course, you can’t say it enough.

Comment by Mike Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 9:38 pm
The instant temptation for some is to think that Rauner committed a gaffe when he didn’t name a company. What it showed me is that the Rauner campaign studied the Romney campaign and knew better than to take the bait. If Rauner highlights a particular company as a success, the Quinn campaign looks for anything that might portray the company in a bad light and runs an ad with Rauner praising the company in his own voice followed by a negative narrative about whatever bad thing they believe happened with the company. Better to let partisans make an issue out of his not identifying a particular company. Voters won’t care. Most weren’t watching or listening anyway, but would probably see some kind of ad had he answered the question with specifics. Rauner just sidestepped a potential late game landmine.

“The instant temptation for some is to think that Rauner committed a gaffe when he didn’t name a company.”
I don’t see how it’s not a gaffe. Rauner has been running as someone who is successful in everything he does and knows how to create jobs. He could not name one company that created jobs, not one, except for those socialistic-y public worker pensions that belong to government union bosses’ members.
Comment by Grandson of Man Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 9:47 pm
Quinn won by talking with and for the most voters, on more issues that they care about. Simply put, more people relate to him and his positions than the other guy. (And Quinn’s math skills are better.) Despite Rauner’s double-backflip out of the primary into born-again-moderate talking points, his bullying emotionless delivery still comes across as just another robotic Republican tape recorder looping narrow talking points to a wealthy conservative crowd at a north shore country club luncheon. That tends not to win in Illinois; Just like trickle down economics tends not to work - and independent voters sense that, too.
Comment by Economic Justice Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 9:50 pm
Clearly, the man could easily name a company that he believes to be a success. For it to be a “gaffe,” you’d have to believe that HE doesn’t believe any of his companies have been successful, or that he suddenly drew a blank and couldn’t remember a single company. Not a chance. I understand that some commenters here don’t like him and instantly assume the worst about his motives and career. That’s fine. But he’s not stupid. He sidestepped the question by doing what candidates frequently do when they want to generalize about an issue. They reference a website where you can find more information. Candidates do that all the time. An example of a gaffe would be “let me name three of my most successful companies…company one, company two…and, uh, ooops.” That would be a full-on Perry.
Comment by Illannoyed Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 9:57 pm
but clearly he didn’t name any company. and just to be clear, i am just as unhappy as the non answers from Quinn as well. but this one stuck out the most tonight for me.

Comment by Wordslinger Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 10:03 pm
“I understand that some commenters here don’t like him”
As far as I’m concerned, Rauner doesn’t like people like me, so I react accordingly. I don’t go out of my way to dislike anyone, but try being on the other end of demonization and see how it feels. What makes it worse is that he trots out government workers’ pensions as a success when it benefits him, yet he trashed them and called them a “financial tumor.”
So Rauner’s comfortable with using people–trashing them when he needs to and holding them up as shining examples of success at other times, again, as needed.
Again, I’m of the opinion that Rauner blew it when he couldn’t mention one job that his companies created, except for government pensions. Isn’t that his forte, job creation? How do you not answer that? That’s like asking Barry Bonds if he ever hit a home run.

It was an edge of your seat crash, in slo-mo too.

Bruce,
You made $60 million last year as a business man. You want me to believe that decreasing taxes for businesses an the wealthy will create jobs. Ok. How? When? Just 1 example please.

==As for the repetition, I’m sure Rauner didn’t like Quinn reminding the AA voters 5-6 times at least just as much, if not a lot more, than you.==
I don’t care at all how Quinn chose to use his time and i thought they both did poorly tonight. But my comment noted that when debate time is tight and viewership is low, it’s generally considered wise to get your zinger in once or twice (not six times) and capture the reaction to it for use in your next negative ad– and then move on to a new topic or line of attack in hopes of trapping the opponent on something else, too. Quinn missed some opportunities because he kept rewinding the same tape over and over with ever increasing heat but no additional light.

If Rauner admires Stephanie Neely so much, why did he never offer her a job at GTCR?

Dear Rabble: what do you want to know? look it up on my website. My (second) wife and I have donated lots of money and we will help the state. (Not) love, smirking Bruce

It’s not just that he couldn’t name one company ( although I agree he intentionally sidestepped that one). Rauner is saying that in order to increase jobs you need to create a business friendly environment. He has been a successful business man (he mentioned it once or twice) and yet he can’t point to any job growth as a result of that success. Why should a voter place their bet on one successful businessman who couldn’t point to any specific job growth in Illinois, and his plan to spread that brand of “success”?

Rauner’s dad was a lawyer who became a Senior VP at Motorola. Rauner said he never inherited a nickel.
Hypothesis 1: his dad was similarly bad with numbers
Hypothesis 2: his dad didn’t like him, either

ONE COMPANY - Geez, anybody looking for a job knows to think of at least one success story to put in the resume or prepare for the interview. The fact that he can’t name one company really shows his main focus in business is on the $ soaked from the companies and not job growth.

Didn’t watch it either. But thought reading comments “If only Rauner’s campaign had listened to Wordslinger two months ago!” He should have had his best business success story in his pocket and ready to go.

Just finished watching. Quinn won the first half easy. Can’t believe Rauner didn’t have an answer for that one company question. Second half was probably a tie. Rauner did much better attacking Quinn. Quinn seemed to stay the course though. Quinn should have answered that Yes or No question with a Yes or No and then ramble from there. Rauner sounds like a galoot (not that he is) while Quinn looks constipated up there. Thomas had the best questions. Thought Rauner scored some good points on the AA questions while Quinn just danced.

Either Mr Rauner doesn’t play well with others
or bother with details. Most Chicago
Public School student’s don’t attend middle
school. Maybe his mentoring program for at
risk communities is for the North Shore?

==Most weren’t watching or listening anyway, but would probably see some kind of ad had he answered the question with specifics.==
So, better for them to see an ad where he can’t name a single company? ‘Cause that’s what we’re going to get now!
“or it to be a “gaffe,” you’d have to believe that HE doesn’t believe any of his companies have been successful, or that he suddenly drew a blank and couldn’t remember a single company.”
That’s a weirdly narrow definition of “gaffe”.
Here’s what is most likely: Rauner simply realizes that those companies he created/invested in/advised/whatever were *never intended* to create jobs, or raise wages, or empower workers, or anything else like that. They were intended to enrich investors. And that’s fine, there is a place for that in society, but it’s neither what Rauner has been promising nor what voters want to hear. They may well have been very successful at it, but it’s not what we need in a Governor. Rauner, to his credit, recognized that, but since it basically implodes the entire rationale of his candidacy (besides “I’m Not Pat Quinn”), he couldn’t really say anything.

Quinn was stellar tonight in many ways. Arguably the most notable was him calling out Rauner for all the name calling (”phony” and “failure” were among the Rauner favorites), which almost serves as a timeout for viewers while the man in charge scolds the immature student. What it also did, at least for me, is connect more dots to the verbal threats Rauner was accused of levying against the female staffer. Ultimately, along with the outsourcing of American jobs, the jailed execs, the nursing home scandals and the abolishment of the minimum wage, it all ties up in a not-so-pretty bow. I pray people get it on Nov. 4.
