“I was dismayed, very shocked and concerned to learn late last night that Pat Quinn opposes a travel ban coming from those three countries. I would call on Pat Quinn to please change his mind and reconsider,” Rauner told reporters, calling the travel ban a “common sense initiative.”
Asked about which experts he’s listening to in calling for the travel ban, Rauner cited “(U.S.) Sen. (Mark) Kirk’s staff and other folks here in Illinois and around the state.”
He got his message out, though, and the travel ban polls completely off the charts.
* But as far as his message goes, a state governor has zero power to enforce a travel ban on foreigners. That’s a federal issue.

But Quinn has spent so much time with the POTUS, VPOTUS and FLOTUS lately… surely, he could have raised his concerns about Ebola and travel precautions during his face time with these folks.

Even though it makes no sense to demand a Governor impose Federal restrictions, the intent is clear by Rauner: those suffering, sick and dying in Africa - tough luck, too bad, the heroes trying to help will be stigmatized and treated like criminals upon return.

This will be an effective message for about two more weeks, and then the general public will come to their senses.
But Election Day will have come and gone.
The timing is bad for rational decisions.

ATC = Air Traffic Control = Restricted controlled airspace.
You might want to look into that concept before starting to destroy all the runways.
Besides, we would need those runways for moving US military and civilian aid/medical workers in and out of countries.
Maybe first family can give up a few of their vacations ‘perks’ using federal government transportation (Read USAF) that we can use instead to provide flight services in and out of this ‘restricted airspace’.
Can’t do that - somebody wouldn’t get his 36 holes in….

I’m old enough to remember when this sort of panicked mob mentality was the basis for anti-scientific arguments for quarantining and ostracizing people with HIV/AIDS. I also remember how much that cowardice and stupidity hampered the fight against the disease.
It was pitifully shameful then, it’s inexcusably shameful now.

1) CDC just substantially revised their guidelines just last night. We’re not talking ‘tweaks’, either. Another day, another set of CDC revisions.
2) All the CDC guidelines are ‘temperature’ based. There’s very credible evidence from the current outbreaks in Africa that 13-15% of the individuals with Ebola do not present with fever. Why? Who Knows?
3) “Thirty (US) soldiers until recently stationed in West Africa will be quarantined in Italy when they arrive Wednesday after leaving the Ebola-stricken region this morning.” CNN report this AM.
Oops - “Not ‘Quarantined’, just ‘Controlled Monitoring’.
Wait, there’s a difference?
4) “Australia temporarily stops issuing visas to people from countries affected by Ebola, in a bid to stop the virus from entering the country.”
BBC, this morning.
Seems like all these other institutions/places are pandering to unreasonable fears..or not……

Exaggeration and hyperbole are the tactics of the day- all the way around. It’s what expensive campaigns do. Everyone is screaming at the top of their lungs to get you to notice now. Seniors are being abused, Foster kids abused, babies…yep abused. Immigrants, healthworkers, yep, abused. It’s crazy frenzy all the way around and too bad and too sad.
On the Ebola issue. The President, the Governor and the whole Democratic party at the moment, seem stymied, disillusioned, waffly, confused and incapable of policy making.
That’s a bad place to be when the final decision making process is going on. They just look overwhelmed and underprepared.

I did some research here and this appears to be true, or at least reasonably well supported.
What -doesn’t- appear to be supported however yet is that people infected but not yet running fevers pose any serious danger or risk of infection to the public. So when their temperature does start going up, then they report themselves like that doc did in New York recently.
If you are hinting that Ebola Mary might be soon walking the streets of New York, let’s put a hold on that one right now.

This whole Ebola hysteria is really ridiculous and is being way over exploited by the media.There are 300plus million people in this country and 5 cases of Ebola reported with one death attributed to it. This is one of many problems with 24 hour news programming .This is an issue that really isn’t . Unfortunately we have two candidates who will say anything and do anything to get their name above the fold. Let’s put a ban on ghosts,zombies,vampires and candidates for Gov. Quarantine all of them.

Not saying that, because we don’t know that. Let’s certainly hope not!
But, just fyi, several of those Ebola cases in Africa never did present with a fever up to the point where they died.
There’s just so much we don’t know, and so far, if you are keeping score, we’re 2-1-?
Problem is, ‘Patient 5′ is generally seen as one of those pandemic ‘trip wires’. Let’s hope we don’t see ‘Patient 5′ for a while. We need the time.

… so what? What were the revisions? Oh my gosh, CDC is continuing to monitor the outbreak and update its recommendations. I guess we can just do whatever we want to, no matter what the actual medical professionals are currently saying.

Again, are you serious? Who were the clowns (including a so-called medical professional) from the NBC news team who decided to go out for takeout while they had been exposed and don’t forget the nice long walk they took when they were supposed to be under quarantine.
Oh, and then we have our NY patient who had a whole list of things he did with a ‘low grade’ fever.
Certainly recognized those symptoms early, didn’t they?

No Demo. I have no idea why you feel like this is not honest. From the CDC/NIH on down, this has been a cluster****. We’ve been given several explanations of how this is spread, what to do, who’s in charge, it’s contained, oops it’s not, now it is, quarantine involuntarily, now voluntarily, for what length of time…etc.
It just goes on and on. There’s no clarity to any of these policies that have lasted more than 24 hours.
It polls off the charts because people are fascinated and confused and yes, scared. Rational or not, there’s no definitive leadership on this from the top down and it shows.
One side says don’t panic (which will always launch some panic). The other says, “error on the side of caution”. The voters are deciding which side to believe.
The side that’s saying “don’t panic” are regularly panic merchants. It’s hard to believe them.
Before you point it out, the GOP is just as guilty of panic marketing. The difference is their message this time- better safe than sorry. That’s not partisan, it’s practical in the eyes of a lot of people.

Too bad the GOP is standing behind its fillibuster of the U.S. Surgeon General. We could really use a federal official to lead a coordinated medical response to this threat.

And Quinn came out with a plan and clearly articulated it. It was measured. I think it made people feel better.
I’m all for quarantines if they are implemented smartly. Quinn’s plan seems to be a rational plan.

Demo, play nice now. I own that I’m a Republican. A Precinct Caption for 25 years. In DuPage, we hold the lofty title of Committeemen, but it confuses the Cook folks where the Committeeman is in charge of the whole ward/township and appoints PCs. We’re elected by the precinct voters. So, yes I’m a mostly partisan GOPer. Honest enough?
I’m supporting Rauner. Started favoring Rutherford in the primary, moved to Dillard, then to Rauner, long before the primary election. I’m a Rauner supporter. Or whatever is vogue today here; ite, baut, whatever.
The Dems are all over the place on this Ebola issue. I complimented the Gov yesterday on taking a position. His party is letting him down on this above him. It’s making all of them look silly. I even agreed an involuntary, but home, quarantine was a rational and compassionate position. If that’s too partisan, I’m just not going to score with you brother.

By the way, I’d have been with you on Rauner if he had managed to convince me he had some inkling about the state budget and state finances and had a coherent plan to deal with it. He failed. He’s still got a week. Maybe he’ll surprise me. I doubt it though. Don’t know how, or even if I’ll vote for a gubernatorial candidate. I just know it won’t be Rauner. Not because he’s a Republican. Because he’s not earned it. I wanted a candidate other than Quinn. I really did.

The Governor should ban flights into Illinois from all countries and states where there have been documented cases of Ebola. That would stop flights from Texas, New York, and Spain.
I can find no direct flights to Chicago from Africa. (There seems to have been one from Senegal that was initiated in 2007, but I think it was discontinued.)

Demo, no harm brother. The Dems are in charge at the Federal level and they’re uber in charge at the state and Chicago level. They’re the policy makers. Pat’s been hurt badly by the dancing going on above his head on Ebola and other issues. That’s the guy, his wife, and his veep, he’s chosen to be his muscle in this race.
I’m mostly partisan. Not as much as some of my brethren would like, but mostly. I make every attempt to be honest. I don’t mislead on purpose. Slinger can tell you, I just don’t know what I’m talking about-lol. Except when I do.

I know you think seniors should be taxed to pay for your state pension, but let me ask you something:

Personally I’m sick of politics over this issue.
As a war vet, I’ve never been comfortable with politicians guarding my life and for that matter anyone else’s.
It’s not about fear - it’s about common sense.
