* From an e-mail…

Hi Rich:

What would we have to do for you to get some attention on two senate bills that are trying to [identifying legislation info deleted]?

We are open minded folks.

The first time I read that, I thought they were trying to offer me a bribe or something.

I e-mailed them back to say they should just send me the info and I’d look at it.

But, sheesh, man, try not to get all Soprano’s on me next time. Thanks.

* I just absolutely despise these e-mails…

Hello,

Please see the attached Press Release for [deleted]. Thank you.

Please, please, PLEASE put your press release in the body of your e-mail. C’mon, man, it’s 2015.

* From an action alert

More than 150 shelter residents, homeless providers and students are in Springfield Wednesday with the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless (CCH) to talk to legislators about devastating cutbacks to homeless services proposed in Gov. Rauner’s FY16 state budget.

The action day includes a Twitter storm from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today to protest the proposed cutbacks – please follow @ChiHomeless and tweet using the hashtags #nocuts and #twill.

More than 12,500 Illinois households would lose shelter, housing or services, as CCH detailed on our blog after the budget was announced on Feb. 18.

The “Twitter storm” is quite informative. Click here.

I invented the “twill” hashtage (a combo of Twitter and Illinois), so I’m always on the watch for it. But a legislator tagged me as well, just to make sure I got the hint…

A big THANK YOU to @ChiHomeless for meeting w/ me this morning at my Springfield office. @capitolfax pic.twitter.com/lQQw4dPWVa

@robertmartwick @capitolfax Thank you for meeting with us, Rep. Martwick. 150 of us are in Springfield today. #nocuts #twill

— CCH Chicago (@ChiHomeless) March 4, 2015

Message received.

* I almost always ignore these e-mails…

Hello Rich,

I tried to reach you some days ago but something obviously went wrong, or you just didn’t have the time to check my email. Could you please revert to our infographic [deleted] If you liked it, then please consider sharing it along with your readers.

With Gratitude,

Xxxxx

Unless it’s specifically about Illinois, I’ll pass on the infographic, thanks.

* And I most certainly got the attention of Rep. Greg Harris, a well=known “Sharknado” fan, by asking him via a Facebook post what he thought about the news that Anne Coulter has been cast in “Sharknado 3″ as the nation’s vice president.

Harris’ response

Breaking News!!! Whilst I drove to Springfield to Serve You the People, my friend Rich Miller posted this alert. What I want to ask is would any self-respecting Sharknado devour Ms. Coulter or would they just squeal EEEEEK and fly away?

    I love that.

    I didn’t.

  3. You are spot on with your PR advice. I’m amazed you have to deal with some of that.

    Comment by Just Me Wednesday, Mar 4, 15 @ 1:07 pm

  4. Shark would not eat Anne Coulter. Professional courtesy!

    Comment by Nearly Normal Wednesday, Mar 4, 15 @ 1:08 pm

  5. Like a lot of Sci Fi, but Sharknado - NOT. I’d rather watch Squeezy the Python videos and that is pretty bad.

    Maybe we can create our own horrible movie like: Empowerment - The Governor That Eats Poor People.

    Comment by Norseman Wednesday, Mar 4, 15 @ 1:08 pm

  6. A Sharknado would yield Ann Coulter the right of way as a professional courtesy.

    Comment by Shark Sandwich Wednesday, Mar 4, 15 @ 1:09 pm

  7. Ann Coulter is all bones and bile. Yuck.

  8. ==Please see the attached Press Release==

    I always attach things. I don’t like pasting in the body of the e-mail. I didn’t realize it was such a burden to click on a link.

    And, no that press release didn’t come from me.

    Comment by Demoralized Wednesday, Mar 4, 15 @ 1:19 pm

  9. ===I didn’t realize it was such a burden to click on a link. ===

    It’s a pain. I get hundreds of emails a day. If you wnnt me to read your stuff, put it in the body.

    Comment by Rich Miller Wednesday, Mar 4, 15 @ 1:20 pm

  10. So you didn’t get to those forty attachments I sent?

    We all have our pet peeves. I don’t like opening e-mails and seeing a bunch of crap in them.

    Oh well, I’ll remember your pet peeve if I ever have to send you something.

    Comment by Demoralized Wednesday, Mar 4, 15 @ 1:24 pm

  11. @Demoralized:

    “I didn’t realize it was such a burden to click on a link.”

    Today, with not knowing who exactly is sending you the email…clicking on any ‘link’ is not a very wise way to go about things. The email account might be compromised, or simply malicious.

    Attachments from unknown sources, particularly sent out shotgun style…are a no-go for me. Aside from the volume Rich receives, they are just a bad idea to click on.

    You might consider that next time you attach a link to an email, and wonder why you’re not getting a reply. It might just be going into the junk file.

    Comment by How Ironic Wednesday, Mar 4, 15 @ 1:29 pm

  12. I was talking about attachments of documents and not links.

    But I think I’ll shut up now before Rich tells me to.

    Comment by Demoralized Wednesday, Mar 4, 15 @ 1:34 pm

  13. This Ann Coulter thing would be awesome if Al Shaprton was cast as the President.

    Comment by Demoralized Wednesday, Mar 4, 15 @ 1:46 pm

  14. You should channel Don Corleone when responding to emails like the first:

    I understand. You found paradise in Illinois. You had a good trade, you made a good living. The police protected you and there were courts of law. So you didn’t need a friend like me. Now you come and say “Don Miller, give me justice.” But you don’t ask with respect. You don’t offer friendship. You don’t offer to buy an advertisement. You don’t even think to call me “Mr. Miller.” You come into my inbox on the day my daughter is to be married and you ask me to promote your cause.”

    Correspondent, Correspondent, what have I ever done to make you treat me so disrespectfully? If you’d come to me in friendship, this scum who ruined your bill would be suffering this very day. And if by some chance an honest man like yourself made enemies they would become my enemies. And then, they would fear you.”

    “Some day, and that day may never come, I will call upon you to do a service for me. But until that day, consider this justice a gift on my daughter’s wedding day. “

  15. Good one, Jerry.

    Comment by Rich Miller Wednesday, Mar 4, 15 @ 2:01 pm

  16. Same goes with documents from an unknown source. Extensions such as doc, txt, pdf, xls can be infected. I never open a document unless I know the source and am expecting it.

    Comment by anonlurker Wednesday, Mar 4, 15 @ 2:01 pm

  17. @Demoralized,

    Even documents now as attachments are portals for malware, and other nasties. Not just links to web addresses.

    Just embed the info. It’s safer.

    “….How to protect yourself-
    Only open email attachments that are expected and that come from a trusted source.
    Use an Internet security solution, such as XXXXX XXXX Security™, that automatically scans email attachments for viruses and other malicious software before opening them.
    Delete any suspect messages without opening them.
    Do not click Web links or download files sent by someone you do not know, either in email or IMs”

    Just sayin’

  18. And here I thought all my emails were stimulatin’.
    lol

    I would have thought you would send them info on how to take out an ad

    You would’ve thought wrong.

    Seriously? Thanks for the “education” because I sure didn’t know any better.

    Sheesh.

  22. This is why I have a good e-mail account and a junk e-mail account. If it’s in my junk I had it sent there for a reason.

    Comment by Demoralized Wednesday, Mar 4, 15 @ 2:49 pm

  23. Rich,

    Now that we’ve established what doesn’t work — is the best method still to send you the press release tucked inside a six-pack?
