* I wish it was 100 percent, but Frank’s a tough guy and I’m sure he’ll be fine…
State Rep. Frank Mautino, D-Spring Valley, announced Monday he is receiving treatment for recently diagnosed esophageal cancer.
“During a routine physical in late January, my doctor found a mass. Following a biopsy in February, I was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. My family and I are thankful for the skilled physicians working with me. My prognosis is good, and I expect to make a full recovery.
“I am currently receiving chemotherapy treatment, which will be followed by several weeks of chemotherapy and radiation treatment and surgery.
“While my activity in the district may be limited while I receive treatment, I have adjusted my treatment schedule so I can continue representing local residents, both in my district and in the State Capitol.
“My family and I would like to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers at this time.”
In a phone interview Monday, Mautino said the cancer was “caught early” and that doctors have told him it was 97 percent curable.
Hang in there, Frankie!

God speed to you Frank! You’re the best! You’re a tough Italian who will beat this. We will never forget all that you did for the Dept. of Natural Resources, not to mention all of your other efforts in this state. God will be with you and you have tremendous support. Read all that you can about the treatment and treat yourself well during it. This state can wait for you.

Mautino has always had a special place in my heart. Ages ago I was a lonely Republican staffer, and in my committee the Democrats where forever bringing last minute amendments and changes to committee, and my Republican spokesperson rarely came to committee and never argued that such last minute changes were unfair. On one particularly bad week I was just about to cry from the stress and who but Democrat Frank Mautino came to my defense and told the Chairman we should recess and come back later after “everyone” had a chance to read the changes. He winked at me and I’m sure he doesn’t remember but I’ve forever thought him to be very classy and I wish him well.
