Lance and the Rauner Republicans have brought their DC political experience to Springfield. While the process at the Capitol ain’t great and hasn’t been for a long time, at least budgets, such as they were, got produced on time and everything wasn’t subject to complete partisan gridlock. Guess that’s about to change.

Talk about spin.
Goldberg was asked why certain people weren’t involved in discussions for reform. “You mean lobbyists?” he asked. There was a lot of back and forth for awhile, when Goldberg said, “We didn’t want lobbyists and special interests to write this legislation.”
The Senator questioning him (I missed which on the audio feed) said they wouldn’t be writing the laws, rather contributing their concerns to the process and drafting of the bills.
Seems like Trover missed that critical detail from the discussion. Or chose to drastically overlook it.

They were false budgets which underestimated expenditures, overstated revenue, did not properly fun the pension system and were in violation of the State Constitution. Other than the system was great.

To me, this is a succinct hit/tweet. He kept out insider baseball stuff (like ALEC) and kept it simple. The word “lobbyist” can be toxic.

Seriously!!!!??? This is embarrassing grammar school stuff!!! It’s a shame that the “leadership” in the GOP GA lacks the spine or god forbid the fortitude to tell Rauner and his folks that they’re approach is a major reason for the current dysfunction. I guess all that taxpayers can look forward to at this point from the GOP and Rauner rookies will be millions and millions of dollars being spent on propaganda in hopes that somehow the 2016 elections will alter the power paradigm. Yeah that’s great leadership for ya - way to shake things up - UGH!

It’s a game of lifeboat, and the governor would like to throw some folks overboard.

Legislators are to write ‘tort’ and make laws.
If the legislators are doing this as needed, then why are they in office in the first place.

When a lobbyist writes a bill for something I agree with it is listening to the public and good policy…..when they write a bill I don’t agree with it is bad policy written by the devil incarnate. Trover’s tweet is the a shot at trying to win the media war and public perception.

I’d also be interested in knowing who Rauner and his staff are meeting with who SHOULD be registered as a lobbyist but have failed to do so in contravention of the law. I suspect there may be an investment banker, former campaign staffer, policy wonk, wannabe contractor or donor who fall into this category.

Over the years, I have learned a lot about how things are done in Springfield. I have also discussed our process with friends familiar with other state legislatures and DC. One thing has become very clear: the “agreed bill” process facilitated by lawmakers working with lobbyists and other stakeholders is unusual and serves our state very well.
Do the “lobbyists” get to write some bills? Sort of, but 1) they know the subject and 2) there are folks from all sides (including the exec side) who need to agree on the language. The end result is that we get some informed compromises that work well and avoid conflict. It is also a tool used by legislators to push opposing sides to sit down and negotiate.

No, they don’t, they have staff write the laws OR they take legislation from interest groups who employ former staff to write them. Interest groups and staff then research the proposed laws and provide feedback on what the proposed language is likely to do.

Companies and associations routinely register key professional staff that have dealings with state government to ensure they don’t run afoul of the Lobbyist Registration Act. It is their expertise that is important in negotiating legislation that affects their organization. Even hired gun lobbyists depend on the expertise of these folks.
So the Rauner policy will have the impact of cutting out the experts in discussing bills. That is an absurd action by our “transparency” governor. This guy wants to cut the legs off of anyone who doesn’t think like he does.
Shame on Durkin and Radogno if they don’t call Rauner off this horrible policy.

Lobbyists ensure that the people potentially effected by legislation have an ability to be heard. Asking for their feedback and opinion is common sense.
Legislation is a compromise between legislators representing their constituencies and citizens impacted by it.
Naturally a governor who doesn’t believe in compromise is unable to govern, legislate or be effective. Naturally, a spokesperson for that governor would disrespect the legislating process.
After this, Trover is going to need a lobbyist.

I’m honestly not sure what you’re arguing. No Democrat in the GA got elected by promising to support Governor Rauner’s agenda. On balance, I bet most of them got elected pledging to oppose major parts of it (like RTWFL). So…should they have betrayed their beliefs and the constituents because Rauner won his race? That makes no sense.
