Nick and Nick,
I thought about it, but wanted to dig a little deeper into the Zevon collection. My runner up was “I was in the House when the House burned down,” which is also highly appropriate for this session.

Not sure about overall, but for the GOP, it has been Painting by Numbers:
“‘Cause your painting by numbers
Connecting the dots
They don’t have to tell you
You don’t call the shots
You jump when they say jump
And you don’t ask how high
‘Cause painting by numbers they know you’ll get by
You take a position
In the old man’s firm
He signs all the papers
You agree to the terms
They let you run errands
And you don’t get days off
You take out the garbage and hope it pays off”

“Always look on the bright side of life”
Some things in life are bad
They can really make you mad
Other things just make you swear and curse
When you’re chewing on life’s gristle
Don’t grumble, give a whistle
And this’ll help things turn out for the best…
And…
…always look on the bright side
of life…
(Whistle)
Always look on the light side
of life…

47th, I agree, yours was a better choice, but in “Lawyers, Guns & Money”, Zevon croons:
Well, I went home with the waitress
The way I always do
How was I to know
She was with the Rauners, too
I want gambling in Chicago
I took a little risk
Send lawyers, guns and money
Dad, get me out of this
I’m the innocent taxpayer
Somehow I got stuck
Between the rock and the hard place
And I’m down on my luck
And I’m down on my luck
And I’m down on my luck
Now I’m hiding in my district
I’m a desperate man
Send lawyers, guns and money
The sh*t has hit the fan

Honeymoon Suite’s — Bad Attitude
Sliding in the door are the roads we all know
Yesterday’s heroes with no room to grow
They you say you want the money
You want the big prize
But they’ll cut you
Down to size, with your
Bad attitude, twisted views
Two can play that game
No one likes to lose
What’s it like living like you do?
Talk, talk is cheap talk so far from the truth
Why do they listen to you?
Soon you will fall boy, record shows
Only the stories will turn on you, best be on your toes
There’s such a thing as trust
Nothing else is the same
When your face is in the ground
You’ve only yourself to blame
You say you want the money
You want the big prize
But they’ll cut you
Down to size , with your
Bad attitude, twisted views
(Bad, bad attitude)

“throwin stones” by the grateful dead with yes, no g at the end of throwing.
Commissars and pin-stripe bosses
Roll the dice.
Any way they fall,
Guess who gets to pay the price.
Money green or proletarian gray,
Selling guns ’stead of food today.
So the kids they dance
And shake their bones,
And the politicians throwin’ stones,
Singing ashes, ashes, all fall down.
Ashes, ashes, all fall down.
Heartless powers try to tell us
What to think.
If the spirit’s sleeping,
Then the flesh is ink
History’s page will thus be carved in stone.
And we are here, and we are on our own
On our own.
On our own.
On our own.
If the game is lost,
Then we’re all the same.
No one left to place or take the blame.
We can leave this place and empty stone
Or that shinin’ ball we used to call our home.
So the kids they dance
And shake their bones,
And the politicians throwin’ stones,
Singing ashes, ashes, all fall down.
Ashes, ashes, all fall down.

Well I rode into town with my ear to the ground
Looking for the right hand to play

I heard of a place where men got together
Playin’ and layin’ it down
I’m going in to win, but Lord, what a sin
I didn’t know they’d gun me down
Chorus:
Gunsmoke on the horizon, hiding the setting sun
Gunsmoke on the horizon, I grabbed my horse and run
Well the dealer was blind and I was trying to find
A way to keep the winnings I’d found
The smoke was thick, the tension was thicker
I still thought they’d gun me down
Chorus:
Gunsmoke on the horizon, hiding the setting sun
Gunsmoke on the horizon, I grabbed my horse and run
I didn’t come into this ol’ two horse town to get all shot I’ve
got a little livin’ on my mind
Aces and eights, ha-ha-ha-ha
Now the dealer dealt me eight and I had my straight
I knew the other men would call
The booze was a flowin’, my cards were showing But
my back was up against the wall
Chorus:
Gunsmoke on the horizon, hiding the setting sun
Gunsmoke on the horizon, I grabbed my horse and run
C’mon Thunder

Back to the 80s for Pat Benatar and “Love is a Battlefield.” Despite a tense budget season, I started laughing just now as I pictured Rauner and Madigan and the rest decked out in their best 80s-wear and doing that shoulder-shimmy thing as though they were weird futuristic Jets and Sharks.

Lyrics to Fight Song Evacuate now! - by The Republic Tigers
Illegitimi non carborundum.
Evacuate now!
Illegitimi non carborundum.
If you cared, there’d be love in the air.
Pharmaceuti-government got your mind
And your thoughts.
Can you feel
Where’s your spine?
Evacuate now, cause
This storms out for blood.
Build a shelter for your kind,
And protect the ones you love.
It seems that
Everyday we’re fightin’, and we’re
Causin’ bolts of lightnin’, like a
Hot and cold collision in the sky.
You think your fellas, co-conspirators,
Got your back?
When the fear they dispatch
Comes from a diffident path.
What of then,
Opponent ready to pass?
When the clouds clear
We’ll be standing here.
Get down in your basement.
These sirens are loud.
Lock the doors and eat the key,
To elude the things you’d see.
Take notice,
Everybody’s frightened by the
Radically enlightened, and they
Say to jump.
Still, you reply How high?
Evacuate now, cause
This storm’s out for blood.
Build a shelter for your kind…

Kung Fu Fighting
There was funky China men from funky Chinatown
They were chopping them up
They were chopping them down
It’s an ancient Chinese art
And everybody knew their part
From a fainting, to a slip
And a kickin’ from the hip
Everybody was Kung Fu fighting
Those kids were fast as lightning
In fact it was a little bit fright’ning
But they fought with expert timing
